4. Part 3

In Christian’s office, which is a lot more organised than Brigadier Crixton’s. The daylight floods in through the window, and The Doctor and Sami sit the opposite side of the desk to Christian. In the middle of the clear desk is an irregularly shaped lump of orange metal, blackened in places, and seems to be glowing very slightly when placed in the shadows.

Christian:
This was the first piece the miners found. They didn’t know what it was, so gave it to me, a man of the sciences. It looks just like a burnt piece of copper, except for…

Doctor:
 The burning?

Sami, sighing:
The glowing, Doctor.

The Doctor’s eyes widen, and he leans forwards.

Doctor:
 It glows?

Sami:
Can’t you see? When it’s in the shadows, it glows.

The Doctor takes the rock from the table and holds it in the shadows.

Doctor:
 Well spotted Sami!

Sami, half paying attention, staring out the window at Jonathan:
It wasn’t that hard to see.

Christian:
Exactly, Doctor. I mean, copper doesn’t normally glow… Is it a new element of some kind?

Doctor:
Oh, not new. Well, new on Earth. This is one of the most common minerals in the Betelgeuse system.

Christian:
 What?

Doctor:
It’s called Acturide. It’s used for building vehicles and machinery, but I didn’t know there was any on Earth. It’s rarely found outside of the Betelgeuse system…

Sami:
 Meteorites?

Christian:
I’m sorry?

Doctor, to Christian:
This is from another world. A planet millions of kilometres from here.

Christian:
 Kilometres?

Doctor:
Miles, I mean. Sorry, forgot you weren’t using the metric system yet.

Christian:
You mean… There are other planets out there?

Sami:
Yes, of course there are. And other species too. But chances are, this Acturide came down in a meteor. Am I right, Doctor?

Doctor:
As much as I hate to admit it, you’re probably right.

Christian, pushing his chair back from the desk:
But then that could be dangerous! It could kill us all!

Sami, sighing:
It’s a piece of metal.

Doctor:
Acturide is harmless. Not me harmless, harmless harmless. It couldn’t hurt a fly. It’s one of the most stable elements in the galaxy, it’s fine. Just don’t expose it to sulphuric acid, and you’re safe. You can use it as a glow-in-the-dark paperweight!

In the bedroom in Christian’s house. Sami has made a wall down the centre of the bed with pillows, with The Doctor on one side and her on the other.

Sami:
We’ve got some Acturide back at UNIT.

Doctor:
But how did it get here though?

Sami:
UNIT got it from somewhere in China. There was a meteor shower 50 miles from Beijing. The meteors were made of Acturide.

Doctor:
But you don’t GET Acturide in meteors! That’s the problem! Argh!

Hits himself on the forehead in frustration
 My brain isn’t working.

Sami:
Well maybe it’s a secret underground alien base? And they’re taking people from the forest because they need guinea pigs to do experiments on?

Doctor:
Don’t be silly. No-one does experiments on humans. You’re all the same. Once you’ve seen one, you’ve seen them all.

Sami, offended:
 Thanks.

Awkward silence.
Well, I’m going to sleep now.

Doctor:
Good idea. In the morning, I want to get a look at that mine.

The next morning. Elijah knocks on the door of The Doctor and Sami’s room. We see things from Elijah’s point of view.

Sami, squealing:
 No! I’m not dressed!

Doctor:

sighs
(muffled, with something in his mouth) Hold on, I’m coming.

The Doctor unlocks the door and steps out, closing it behind him. Elijah is standing there, and frowns when The Doctor comes out.

Elijah:
 Doctor?

Doctor:
 Mmm hmmm-mmmm

The Doctor holds up one finger, leans out of the window at the end of the corridor next to their room, and spits the toothpaste and water out of the window. Elijah looks at him disapprovingly.

Doctor:
Sorry about that. You were saying?

Elijah:
 I was right, wasn’t I?

Doctor:
 What makes you say that?

Elijah:
I’ve thought about it. Whatever it is in the forest, it’s scared of you. You’ve seen war, and violence. You’ve lost people close to you. Your eyes are much older than the rest of you.

Silence, as The Doctor thinks about what to say.

Elijah:
Tell me why I shouldn’t just kick you out of here.

Doctor:
 Because you can’t.

Elijah:
 What?

Doctor:
To force me out there into the forest, one of you needs to escort me. And none of you are going to dare to go out there while people keep disappearing. So Elijah, feel free to throw me out. If you can.

Tense silence, which is broken by Sami coming out of the room, fully dressed and yawning.

Sami:
 Huh?

Both the men are silent.

Doctor:
Elijah, I was hoping I could have a look around today?

Elijah:
 What for?

Doctor:
I’d like to collect all the glowing rocks in the town, please. I need to analyse them back in the…

Sami:
 The TARDIS? In the forest?

Doctor:
Ah. Yes. Right. Never mind, I can do my tests here.

Christian, from the staircase:
You’re not doing any tests in my house Doctor! I need a calm environment for my patients.

Elijah:
I know somewhere you can run your tests.

Sami:
Running tests? But that’s boring! I want to do something fun!

Doctor:
If you want to do something fun, run around the town and see how many pieces of Acturide you can collect.

Sami:
 Really?

Doctor:
You do that while Elijah shows me where I can set up some equipment for testing, and then I’ll need your help to get everything I need to run the tests.

Sami:
But a monkey could do that.

Doctor:
But could a monkey identify Acturide from copper and be trained like a UNIT soldier?

Cheeky smile

Sami, rolling her eyes:
 Fine.

The Doctor turns to Elijah, rubbing his hands together as Sami disappears off down the stairs.

Doctor:
So Elijah! Take me to my room!
