Silenced Heart

Luke Hemmings loves the fame. The sound of the girls screaming his name and the flashing lights. His band members see this, so they make a bet. If he can last without the fame, he'll be paid. Luke goes back to school, and he meets a girl who flips his entire world upside down. When the bets over, he has one of the biggest decisions he'll ever have to make: leave her or hold on for as long as he can.

19. Chapter 19

-Luke-

"She seems like a nice girl," Ross declared on our ride back to our complex.

I just nodded and pressed my head against the chilled window glass. My head bumped along with the rhythm of the car.

"How long have you known her for?" he asked, taking a glance at me from the rearview mirror.

"Eh, I don't know. A week and half maybe?" He nodded his head, a line forming on his lips.

It had been five minutes of sitting at red lights on the Boulevard and I thought my head would explode. I lifted my head up from the window and took a good look at the man standing on the side of the rode holding up a sign stating that he was homeless and hungry. He looked familiar to me, but I didn't know exactly why.

"Do you have anything to give that man?" I queried, peering over to Ross. He looked over to the man, shaking his head.

"Don't worry about him. People are just trying to get a few bucks out of whoever gets suckered into it." I sighed, slouching my shoulders.

"Yeah. You're probably right," I agreed. The green light illuminated, all the cars roaring to life and driving along.

My eyes followed the outline of the man while we drove past him.

I walked through the crowded hallways the next day with bags under my eyes and a grouchy façade.

Hope was standing at her locker, shoving books into the cramped space in between the wall and a couple forcefully sucking each others faces off.

I walked up behind her, a smile on my face.

"Hey," I greeted making her jump and hit the people next to her. They broke apart, shooting us a nasty glare.

"Uh...s-sorry!" she called, causing the girl to huff in frustration as they walked away.

"Sorry 'bout that," I apologized with a chuckle.

"It's okay," she murmured, focusing on the textbooks she was chucking into her locker.

"Um...I didn't know if you wanted to work on our project again tonight. I don't have anything to do tonight, but tomorrow I have plans, so I can't." She pondered over the question, biting her bottom lip in full focus.

Whoa.

I was intently staring at her when she looked back to me, her brown eyes big and bright.

"Yeah. That's fine."

I nodded before I started to turn when I heard the bell ring.

"I'll see you at lunch," she told me before walking into the class we had together.

.

.

I, in fact, did see Hope at lunch, sitting over in the corner she's always in, her nose shoved into the pages of a book.

"Hey," I whispered quickly, trying to give her a bit of a scare.

She jumped, dropping the small book into her lap with a gasp.

"Carson! Gosh, you scared me!" She was giggling, using her hand to muffle the sounds.

"That's what I was trying to do," I admitted, smirking at her while she just smiled.

"Thanks. I's great to know that I have a friend who wants me to have a heart attack." I shrugged, closing my eyes and raising my hands as if saying eh, I know.

She picked her book up from her lap, shoving an index card into the page she wanted to mark as where she stopped.

"What book?" I asked, catching her off guard.

"Huh? Oh, the book. It's called Safe Haven." She looked down to her book, cracking a smile. "I love it." She rose her head, catching my gaze and smiling. "It's a really nice story." I nodded, taking a glance at the clock.

"It's 12:13. We should get going soon," I suggested. I turned back to find Hope reading her book once again. "Hope," I called, trying to grasp her attention. "Hello. Earth to Hope?" She snapped her head up, giving me a questioning look.

"It's 12:15, so we should head to class soon." She nodded, sticking her index card back in its place.

"Ok."

.

.

.

"So what are your plans for tomorrow?" Hope asked me, attaching a picture onto our poster board.

"Going out with some friends," I casually said, shrugging my shoulders coolly.

"Oh. Who are they?" She seemed very interested I what I was doing.

I was actually going out with the band to grab something to eat because they were leaving on Saturday and heading to New York.

"Some old friends from Australia who are coming in for a visit." She lifted her head, showing me her large brown eyes that were sparkling with wonder.

"They're from Australia? Oh, yeah, because that's where you're from," she sheepishly stated, lowering her head to hide her reddening face.

"Yeah, they are." She nodded her head, gluing another picture onto the white board.

"Can we listen to some music?" she suddenly questioned, raising her head to look at her. I shrugged and nodded.

"Sure." I stood up and went over to my phone which was resting on the table. "What song?"

Hope thought for a moment, biting her lip again.

"Do you have any Katy Perry?" I nodded my head, searching the artist online.

.

.

Hope and I finished the next part of our project late in the evening.

"I'm gonna go home now. See you tomorrow." She quickly stood up and started to gather her things in her bag.

She swiftly slung the backpack over her shoulder, shot me a smile, and left.

The screen door shut with a loud and annoying creek, making my nose crunch up.

I glanced over to my kitchen table and saw Hope's phone resting there.

I stood up and walked over to it, staring at it for a few moments before picking it up. It wasn't an iPhone, but it was nice.

I was nosy and opened it up, finding that she didn't have a pass code.

I was in her pictures, laughing at some of Hailey's selfies when there was a knock on the door.

"Hey," she greeted me. I handed her her phone back with a smile.

"Sorry. It was on the table." She nodded and looked down. I stood there staring at her for a few seconds before sighing out.

"Bye," she said, turning and walking down the stairs to the next flight.
