14. Chapter 14

Carson stared at me while I poured out my soggy cereal into his kitchen sink.

"Are you still hungry?" he asked, his eyes fixed onto the back of my head.

"Nah. Thanks, though." He nodded.

"Want to watch a film?" I glanced over to the small television set in front of the couch.

We had settled on watching Safe Haven. Carson had this little wonder called Netflix. He had no problem with viewing a serious chick flick.

"I can't believe you're making me watch this," he groaned, strolling back in with a bottle of water in his hands.

"You agreed. Can't go back now," I mocked, a sneer appearing on his face.

He took a seat next to me with the remote in his hand. He pressed play, and the movie started.

We were halfway through and Carson had fallen asleep on the opposite side of the couch.

I stared at him with a smirk on my lips. He looked so cute and cuddly. Maybe Hailey was right, I could like him, but right now, he's my friend. Anything else, it'd be creepy and, not to mention, awkward.

A loud banging sound came from outside, causing me to jump. Carson flew from his spot to the window.

"What was that?" I shuttered. He shrugged his shoulders, rubbing his eyes as well.

He wasn't wearing his glasses, though. He looked cute, but way too familiar.

"Probably the wind. Maybe just threw a chair or something," he casually sated, no thought needed.

I, on the other hand, was terrified it was some serial killer who was planning on storming in, knife in hand.

Carson must've noticed my wide eyes and parted lips because he sat down next to me with a soothing smile.

"It's okay, Hope. Trust me." He patted me on the back with a straight face. I nodded, cuddling closer to the edge of the couch.

He yawned, his hand covering his open mouth.

"I think I'm going to get some sleep," he told me. I sighed, allowing my shoulders to slouch further in. "Did you want to sleep in my bed?" he nonchalantly offers. My face contorts to one of shock and confusion.

"No, no, no! I'll....I'll sleep on the couch," I tell him, my eyes wider than normal.

"No! I'll sleep out here. Go in there," he orders, his finger pointing into his bedroom.

"No." I frowned. I was not going to sleep in his bed. That's 100% gross and creepy. He's my friend. Not my boyfriend.

But a girl can dream.

He sighed and nodded.

As he stood up to leave, he sent me a sympathetic smile.

"You're positive you don't want the floor, even?" I sighed and reluctantly followed him into his dark room.

"I'll take the floor," I told him sternly. He nodded quickly, rushing to his bed to pull off some pillows and blankets.

"You sure that's comfortable enough?" he called as I shuffled around on the uncomfortable floor.

"Mhmm." I threw my head onto the fluffy pillow with a quiet sigh.

"Night," he mumbled. I smiled, wishing his the same good night.

I was awoken by a loud bang just like the one from earlier. I shot up from my horizontal position on the floor.

"Carson!" I whispered quickly. "Carson!" I called louder.

"Huh?" he grumbled, slamming his hand onto his forehead.

"Get up!" I demanded, slapping his bare leg. "Now! Please," I begged, becoming more frightened as the loud sound continued to replay.

"What?" he groaned, a grim line on his lips.

"The noise keeps coming back." As if on queue, the banging became further away.

"Ok." He pushed himself off of his bed and out to the hallway he walked down to the front door of the apartment, taking a peek. "It's just a window next door," he chuckled.

My cheeks heated while I cocked my head to the side next to him to see his conclusion was, in fact, correct.

"Oh. Um, I'm sorry," I sheepishly apologized. He waved his hand as if saying it's all good.

"Let's go back to sleep," he suggested, motioning me to follow. I sighed.

"Night," I whispered, my words barely audible.

Carson had fallen right back asleep, but it was a different story with me.

My eyes were wide open, blankly staring at the plain white ceiling. My mind was vacant of any thoughts, and the only sound was my heart beating against my chest.

"Are you alright?" Carson questioned, scaring the heck out of me.

"Uh...y-yeah," I stuttered.

"No you're not," he bluntly replied, knowing I had been awake for a half an hour already.

"Yes. I am." Truth was, I really wasn't. I couldn't get myself to fall back asleep.

"Want to come up here?" I shook my head, the brushing sound of the sheets used as an answer. "Just come on," he said.

I reluctantly moved my body towards the king sized bed. He had shifted over to the far left side, leaving the right available for me to take.

"Better?" he asked. I nodded my head. He yawned once more before the sheets rustled, indicating he had turned to his side. "Night, Hope." I shut my eyes, hoping to fall asleep.

Soon, I did.

Carson didn't wake me up, which was nice. But instead he had decided on taking a shower.

That's why when I trudged into the bathroom when I woke up I screamed at the top of my lungs, thinking he was an intruder.

"Calm down! It's just me!" he shouted, sounding terrified himself.

I sprinted out and slammed the door.

"I'm sorry," I mumbled, hiding my face in my hands.

I heard his chuckle and thanks for my apology.

I strolled down the hall and into the living room. The couch looked lonely, so I sat down on it.

Carson secretively stepped out of the bathroom and rushed to his room. His hair was dripping wet, his towel loosely slung on his lips.

"Sorry about that," I yelled, my eyebrows etched closely together.

"''s ok?" He sounded unsure as he responded.

"Ok." I turned to face the door, my cheeks heating up as the moment filled my thoughts.
