31. Chapter 31

Clove's POV

3 years later

I sit on a fighting mat in District Two's Training Center. I have my arrangement of knives in front of me. As I examine them, Cato is chopping up dummies a little ways in front of me. Our three-year-old son,Caden, is playing with a small dagger.

"Caden, come here." Cato puts down his sword and picks Caden up. Caden still has the small dagger in his hand. Cato brings him up to a dummy."Alright, stab it." Caden's face lights up. He stabs the dummy in the chest. I laugh and bit and Cato hears.

He puts Caden down and sits down next to me."What are you doing?"

"Looking at my beautiful knives." I laugh and pick one up. I throw it and he flies past his face.

"Trying to kill me again?"

"No." I smile.

"I've been meaning to ask you something."

"And what would that be?"

"Will you marry me?"

"Can I say no?"

"Then yes." He leans in and kisses me."Wheres the ring, buddy boy?"

"Thought you hated girly stuff."

"Damn right I do."

"That's why I got you this." He tosses me a knife.

"This is why I love you." I lean in and hug him.

We are suddenly interrupted when we hear Caden say,"Fuck."

Cato start laughing."He is definitely my son." Cato laughs. He is right. Caden looks exactly like Cato. He acts like him too.

Caden is on the floor. He tripped over something." Caden, you alright?" I ask him, laughing.

"Mhm, I think." He stands up.

"See that is why you old a knife like this." I point the knife downwards, toward the floor."Then, you do this." I throw the knife Cato just gave me. It lodges itself in the chest of a dummy a ways away."It works quite well." I smile.

"Like I'd buy you a useless knife." Cato rolls his eyes.

"Can I try?" Caden asks me.

"Wouldn't you rather be like your amazing dad who doesn't throw knives?" Cato stands up and grabs a sword."See, these are way better."

"Shut up,Cato." I send a knife past his head."Ok, come here." I grab a dull knife and a mat."Alright, one foot in back, the other forward. Hold the knife like this." I show Caden the right foot position and how to hold it." Alright next, bring it back. Keep your wrist unbent. Alright, flick it forward now."

Caden threw it with the perfect release point, stance, finger position, and followup. "Was that good?" He asked. He hit the middle of the mat.

"Damn. He must be your son too." Cato says shockingly. He is shocked at his accuracy.

Caden smiles. He knows he did it right. He runs up and pulls the knife out of the mat. He continues to throw it. He hits the same spot every time.  I smile in pleasure as Cato just watches.

"Told you." I laugh.

"Told me what?" Cato shakes his head.

"He'd be a knife thrower."

"I swear, if he isn't a victor at twelve I don't know what he is."

"You haven't taught him to throw a spear yet, have you?"

"No, but he probably already knows how."

"We could see."

"Why not?" Caden grabs a small spear."Caden, come here." Caden brings the knife and goes to Cato."Give the knife back to your mom and try to use a spear."

"Alright." Caden hands me the knife.

"Here." Caden takes the spear out of Cato's hand."Alright, do this." Cato gets another spear and shows him how to stand and wrap his fingers around it."Bring it back and kind of just chuck it." Caden throws it and it hits the same spot the knife did. The very middle.

"Leo!" I run to find Leo.

"What, Clove? Did you stab Cato?" He sarcastically says. He has his feet up on his desk and is drinking coffee.

"No,but I think I've got your future superstar."

"Yes. I swear, barely any training."

Leo follows me into the room Cato and Caden are in. He walks in just in time to see Caden hit the chest of a dummy with a spear."Oh my lord."

"I told you." I laugh.

"I have another Cato! God there hasn't been another Cato in twenty years!"

"What else does he do?"

"He throws." Cato laughs."Knives."

Wait, are you telling me that I am going to get one student who is a combination of two of my best students?"

"Yes we are. Watch him. Caden, show him the knives."

Caden nods and grabs three knives. He sets up and looks at me. I nod in approval. He throws one after another at a dummy. Cato must of told him to aim for the heart of the dummy.

Leo's jaw drops." Well, when would you like him to start training?"

"When can he start?" Cato is happy. He wants Caden to train. He wants Caden to win.

"Anytime. He can start tomorrow if you'd like!"

"He is three,Leo." I butt in.

"Well, Cato how old were you when you started?"

"Four." Cato says.

"My mom used to work her. I started when I could walk." I say blankly.

"Well,Caden can obviously walk! So, if you started earlier, what do you say about starting Caden early. We have some kids a bit older coming in for the first time tomorrow. What do you say?"

"See you tomorrow." Cato smiles. Cato is in love with the fact that Caden is so talented. I can see it in his eyes.

"How does that sound,Caden?" Leo asks him."You ready to begin killing, I mean training?"

Caden nods in agreement."Will I get to use a sword?"

"I think that was the first thing Cato asked me too."

"Like father like son." I laugh.
