A Real World Hunger Games

This is like a real world hunger games, but is a little different. There are no more continents except for North America. A meteorite has destroyed the other 6 continents. North America's people can not thrive or live without the help of food being imported from the other continents, so, North America is broken up into 12 districts. Each district must find a way to make a certain amount of food for the other districts, and each district is assigned their amount. When the people of the capital realize that each district can't support the rest of North America's people, they select 24 people from each district, and each district has it's own game each year. Only two people will survive from the group that has been drawn. This helps keep the population steady. Only 2,ooo people are allowed per district. The games help decrease the number of people. Oh Ya, there is also only a quarter of the world left, just enough land for North America to stay on. They call these games, the Hunger Games.

6. .

School is off during Hunger Games weeks. I don't feel like going into town to say goodbye to anyone the first day after the drawings. If they really want to say goodbye to me, they know where I live, they can come share their sorrow.

I practice my hunting skills. I end up killing 6 squirrels and two wild turkeys that day. I skin the squirrels, and pluck the feathers off the turkeys. After I'm done doing that, I go into town to sell them.

As I walk up the dirt road that separates the stores, everyone stares at me. I continue to walk with my hunting sack thrown over my shoulder. I enter the "Trade and Bargain." When I walk up to the counter, everyone stops chatting and stares at me. They stare me down, like they've never seen a tribute doing their dailies.

One little girl stops in front of me. She has her brown hair in two high pigtails, wrapped with pink ribbon around them, she's half my size. She's wearing a pink dress and black, shiny shoes. She looks pretty well taken care of. I remember when I was her age, and instead of my mom wrapping my hair up in cute little bows, I was out learning to fend for myself.

"Aren't you going to be competing in another day?" she asks me

    "Yah." I politely say back

     Her mom comes running up.

"There you are Lizzie! What have I said about running off!"

She grabs the little girl by the hand, then looks up at me. Terror fills her face, just like all the other tributes.

    "Come on Liz, let's go."

She yanks the girl out of the store in a rush. like I was about to kill her precious little brat.

   I blow.

"What! Haven't You ever seen a girl trying to do her daily things before! You should all be ashamed of yourselves for staring me down like I'm about to kill you! I didn't choose to live this life you know?!" I scream at the other customers in the store."

I walk up to the counter and throw the hunting sack down.

"I want 50 for it all." I say

"Here, here's 50 and a little more, consider it a gift." the man says

He tosses the money to me. I stare down at it. $60.00 in all.

I grab my empty sack and head out the door.

I decide to spend the money on some good bread and candy, the rest I spend on shoes and blankets. Those are four things we don't get much of. As I'm walking down the woods to my hut, I run into Garrett. He comes up and hugs me. I almost fall backwards.

"Thank you so much Darian." He says

    "For what?" I ask

"For including me in your guys' group. I worried all night, but now, maybe I have a chance."

    "How old are you, Garrett?"

"What? I'm the same age as you, 12."

"Yah, I know that, but like whens your birthday?"

     "December 3rd."

"Oh, so you're younger than me."

"What's that got to do with anything?"

"I was just thinking about the other tributes' age. You're the youngest."

"How do you know? Isn't there another 12 year old?"

"No, just a lot of 14, 15, and 16 year olds."

"Oh, well that makes me feel better, now I'm the youngest. Or you could just say the weakest."

"Well you're only like 5 months younger than me, so just say that we're the same age, then you won't feel bad. Anyway, do you want to stay with us tonight, so we can show you the plan? And practices our skills."

"Sure, I'll go tell my grandma."

    "Cool."

    "Cool."

"Then...I guess I'll see you tonight!"

     "Ok, see ya."

Then I continued back to the hut, a little more encouragement built up in my system.
