A Real World Hunger Games

This is like a real world hunger games, but is a little different. There are no more continents except for North America. A meteorite has destroyed the other 6 continents. North America's people can not thrive or live without the help of food being imported from the other continents, so, North America is broken up into 12 districts. Each district must find a way to make a certain amount of food for the other districts, and each district is assigned their amount. When the people of the capital realize that each district can't support the rest of North America's people, they select 24 people from each district, and each district has it's own game each year. Only two people will survive from the group that has been drawn. This helps keep the population steady. Only 2,ooo people are allowed per district. The games help decrease the number of people. Oh Ya, there is also only a quarter of the world left, just enough land for North America to stay on. They call these games, the Hunger Games.

I lay on the hard, frozen ground of the hut, covered up in a deer hide blanket. I keep thinking to myself, "Why me? What did I ever do to deserve this?"

Derek is in the other corner of the hut, carving a wooden spear with his knife. After the drawings, we walked home together and neither one of us said a word. I hated being in this silence, I felt lonely.

So I spoke up, "So Derek, since we only have two more days to live..." that's where I went wrong.

   "No!" he screamed

"Don't ever say that!" he screamed even louder

He threw his knife at the wall I was leaning up against. My head followed it as it whipped through the air. It stuck into the wood only a foot away from my head. Tears came to my eyes.

"I'm so sorry." he sobbed. He cupped his hands around his face, trying to hold the tears.

"Derek, it's ok. The games are overwhelming."

"You know," he murmured through his hands, "My name was actually picked last year. Garrett's brother volunteered for me. He knew I had you to take care of you...I just, I just never told you because I didn't think you could handle it."

This was too much to ask of a 12 year old to handle.

"And now that we're in the games," he continued, "We're going to try the best we can ok? This could actually mean a new life for us, if we win. I've constructed a plan."

I had my full attention on him. I had never thought about actually trying to win, I just thought we would die, and that would be the end.

"When we get into the arena and the games start, you run. Run as fast as you can into the woods. I'm going for the cornucopia. The only member from district 12 I think I may have a problem with is the big kid with the black hair. I don't know if you took note of the other tributes you were standing by, but I did, and he's the only one I think could put up a good fight. I'll grab some water, matches, a bow for you. and a spear for me. I figured we could use the matches to cook what ever animal is out there that you can kill. I will find you in the woods as soon as I can. Just remember, if you run into someone you think will kill you, run or hide."

    "What about Garrett?"

"I didn't even think about him. I guess we could take him with us,  but just remember, only 2 people are allowed to win, so we'll have to drop him towards the end of the games. I'll talk to him tomorrow about this."

And that was the end of our conversation. I kept thinking to myself. What if we don't make it to the end of the games?
