A Real World Hunger Games

This is like a real world hunger games, but is a little different. There are no more continents except for North America. A meteorite has destroyed the other 6 continents. North America's people can not thrive or live without the help of food being imported from the other continents, so, North America is broken up into 12 districts. Each district must find a way to make a certain amount of food for the other districts, and each district is assigned their amount. When the people of the capital realize that each district can't support the rest of North America's people, they select 24 people from each district, and each district has it's own game each year. Only two people will survive from the group that has been drawn. This helps keep the population steady. Only 2,ooo people are allowed per district. The games help decrease the number of people. Oh Ya, there is also only a quarter of the world left, just enough land for North America to stay on. They call these games, the Hunger Games.

She stands up. Her legs start to shake. She doesn't even look at me as she passes by, she's in shock. As she squirms through the other girls and makes her way down the bleachers, too many things race through my mind. She gets halfway up there, when I, not even thinking, stand up and yell so everyone can hear me.

    "I volunteer for Jenny Leroy!"

"What?," the leader asks through the microphone

"I, Darian Newman, volunteer for Jenny Leroy!"

The leader looks down at Jenny then back up at me. silence fills the grandstand. All you can hear is Jenny sobbing.

I don't even look up at Derek. I know he disapproves of this, but why do I have to live anyway? I don't even have anything to live for. And even if I didn't volunteer for Jenny, I would still have to go back to that freezing cold hut, cook that stupid squirrel on a stupid fire, and still go to bed starving. Even if I didn't volunteer, things would still be the same after the drawings. Maybe this was good for me, if I just plain died. Plus, I wasn't going to let Jenny's poor parents go through this with another child. They were too nice to have to deal with this.

I make my way down the bleachers and walk up the isle that leads to the stage where all the other tributes are standing side by side.

Jenny is in total shock. When she finally processes what I have done she runs up to me screaming, and pushes me back.

"No Darian! I will not let you do this!" she screams through tears.

I don't say anything, but I push past her, fighting back the tears that want to pour out like a river.

"No! No! No! Darian! Please don't do this, please don't!"

She grabs on to my leg, so I drag her with me.

"Let go Jenny! You're my best friend! Of coarse I have to do this!" I reply

I try to kick her off but she's way too strong. Finally, one of the capital guards comes up and pulls her off.

She screams and kicks, but I say strong and keep walking up to the stage. When I get there, I take my place next to the 11th tribute.

"Well now, I guess it's time for the boys drawings." he proudly says.

This man is sick. How can he go on in his cheerful voice, when he had just witnessed a heartbreaking scene like that?

    "First tribute...Derek Newman!"

My heart sinks, I knew he was going to volunteer anyway now that I am in the games, but yet, it's still something you don't want to hear.

The leader keeps going until he gets to the 5th name, then my heart sinks even more.

    "Garrett Smith!"

I think my heart is going to fall out of my chest.

I wish Derek's name wouldn't have been called first so he could've just volunteered for Garrett.

I watch him, and even though he tries to make his way up to the stage like a man, you can still see the little kid in him. He's not even a teenager yet. He may even be a couple months younger than me, but I don't know.

He glances over at me, and our eyes meet. He puts his head back down quickly, hoping I didn't see the tears in his eyes, but I did.

The district leader continues with the names, and when all of the boys' names are pulled, he goes over the rules.

"Alright, you have two days to say goodbye to everyone, and then you meet here at 10:00 exactly to start the games. You will be given a uniform, so don't worry about the type of clothes to wear, but a suggestion to the ladies with long hair, I would pull it back in a tight ponytail, bangs included. Alright, I think that about wraps it up! Congratulations to everyone!"

We all stare back at him, disgusted.

Then he says something that I don't think will ever leave my mind.

     "Let the games begin!"
