Keeping Dauntless Company

June was named for the intensity and heat she brings, Jaws was named for how he constantly spoke no matter the time, and Mercy was named after her compassion. The three were best friends, until the factions shattered under their feet. With nowhere to go, they ran to the Fringe to find a home. That is, until the secrets, the fear, and the rest of the world started to get to them. How long does it take, before the former dauntless teenagers collapse under the weight of the real world?

4. Mercy

"Found you!" Link, the boy I had been playing with yelled to me as I ran past him. I kept running. All I could think was, The viper tattoo. The viper tattoo. The viper tattoo. I had to draw it down somewhere before I forgot it. There was this feeling, deep in my gut, that told me I had seen it somewhere before.

My hand waved a quick goodbye as my feet carried me away from Link, and towards the tent I shared with Jaws and my sister, June. It wasn't much, but it was shelter against the harsh winds that ripped through the Fringe throughout the day.

My legs screamed for a break, as my lungs were starved for oxygen. There was still a ways to run though, so I pushed through, remembering the viper with all my might.

The tent soon appeared within my sight, and I charged through the flap, searching for some paper and charcoal which I could use to draw. When my hand was wrapped around my drawing utensil, and a  thin sheet of paper lay in my lap, I began to draw.

I pictured the curved lines of the snake, how they overlapped each other, and how they drew thinner towards the tail. The head was a little lumpy, as if the tattoo artist had been out of practice when they stuck the needle in the skin of the man. There were spots along the spine of the snake, looking like it had bad burns along its back. Lastly, I drew the thing that really called my attention to it, the fangs.

The fangs were the length of my pinky, and curved in so they were pointed towards the killer snake. There was something dripping from the bottom, which I assumed to be blood. The end of the fang looked to be as sharp as that of a sword which cuts flesh. A shiver ran down my spine.

"Mercy!" June yelled from behind me as she entered the tent with new supplies, "I thought you were out with Link." She coughs due to the cold air which filled her lungs, and I attempted to hide the picture.

"I was!" I replied eagerly, "It just got too cold and I decided to come back."

June gave me a look, "I'm not sure it's much warmer here than it was out there." Then she yelled, "Jaws! Get in here and help me move this stuff around!" Jaws followed her order, and quickly rushed inside. The first thing I noticed about him was his pale complexion.

"What's wrong with Jaws?" I whispered to my sister, and she froze. June got a look on her face which she only got when she decided to hide something from me, which she had been doing a lot.

"Nothing." She replied after her space of silence, "He's just a little cold. What's that behind your back?" June motioned to my hands, which were indeed behind my back.

"Nothing." I copied her, "My hands were just a little cold." June rolled her eyes.

"Fine." She turned around to work with Jaws putting things away to make room for the new things they collected, "Don't tell me." She sighed.

It wasn't that I didn't want to tell her, it was just that I wanted to figure it out first. I wanted to find out where I had seen that fanged viper before.
