The Factionless quarters was decrepit and dirty. There was a horrible stench in the air like a million men after a vigorous exercise regime and rotting food. Lani closed her eyes and remembered what her mum had told her:

"Lani, whatever you choose today is your choice okay?"

"I know, mum."

"But I want you to choose Abnegation."

"Abnegation?"

"Yes. Abnegation. It's the safest option for people like you."

"What do you mean, people like me?"

"Lani, you're not the only one. You have to realise that. They're hiding somewhere where no one can find them. And if it comes down to it you have to join them."

It hadn't occurred to Lani until right at that moment what those words actually meant. She wasn't the only one. There were others. Other Divergents. They'd all been kicked out of their factions for treacherous crimes, so they had welcomed her into their clan.

The leader, a hugely tall man called Jonathon, had talked her through the whole system of washing and eating, then shown her to her mattress.

He'd been kicked out of Candor.

Lani sighed and picked up the broom that was in her hand. The stench had steadily gotten worse throughout the day.

Suddenly, she heard something. It was two voices…Jonathon and another Factionless leader. Lani crept over and pressed her ear to the door.

"It was all an experiment?" Jonathon exclaimed.

"Yes. The government wanted the perfect race. People without violence and fear. But when they genetically modified the humans they realised they'd lost their compassion and humanity. That's what caused the Purity War! Anyway, so here we are. The only healing ones in  the whole human harvest. Becoming more human," the other leader explained.

"So what do you propose we do?" Jonathon asked impatiently.

"I think we should attack the factions. A rebellion. But we need soldiers-"

Lani grinned and opened the door. Jonathon jumped but the other man just raised an eyebrow.

"Well," Lani said excitedly. "I volunteer."
