Lani woke to a ray of blinding sun-shine hitting her square in her unsuspecting face. The first challenge came back to her. She had helped a frail woman named Charis Wall. Charis had been very quiet, with a short black bob.

She picked up yesterday's clothes and struggled with the tight top. After she had managed to suck in her chest and get it over her ribs, she added the grey shirt to the outfit. Then the robe on top and she was done.

Down in the foyer of the house, she completed the usual procedure of letting everyone else go first, before finally picking up a piece of toast. Just toast- no butter. Dry and cold, it wasn't satisfying. Lani sneakily nicked another slice and shoved it down her throat before she was noticed. She was starving, but not as much as before. She saw Charis again, walking slowly over to the dwindling breakfast queue. Lani decided to prove to Charis that she was a good young girl, so she went over and gripped the old woman's arm. Charis smiled and thanked her once they reached the station. Lani stood back and watched as the old woman let everyone go first, then at last picked up the last slice. A short boy came up to see nothing left, and Charis gave him the slice. Lani realised that the slice she had stolen had deprived Charis of any breakfast.

Guilt rose up in her gullet. It was just a slice of toast.

Lani strode quickly out of the foyer and dashed out of the front doors. The sun was glimmering behind the clouds. And the air was warm. Pleasant even. But that's all that it was. Pleasant. Lani clenched her fists and closed her eyes, her mouth firm and her mind questioning what she was about to do.

Lani had a nightmare.

She was running and her breath was coming out in sharp, short bursts. Her heart was pumping blood and adrenaline all over her body. Never before had she committed something like this. Lani felt no fear though. Even though she swapped factions there would always be Dauntless in her deep down.

There are we shouts not too far behind her. They made the blood on her hands feel even more like something wrong. But what she'd done was to show no fear. She had no fear. Lani collapsed onto the ground and drew her knees to her chest whereupon she melded into the darkness.

"Lani. Lani."

Lani woke to a rough shaking of her shoulders. Lisa was staring at her with wide eyes. "Lani," Lisa repeated. "You didn't do it? Did you?"

Lani frowned. "Do what?" But as soon as she sat up she knew exactly what.

"You did. Why? Why did you do it?"

Then Lani stood up and ran.
