Layne Carter has had a difficult past two years. After the death of her father and her mother leaving, she is left to raise her 11 year old sister. What happens when Layne comes in contact with the boy of her dreams?

4. Four

"I carried Michelle up to her room and tucked her in. I kissed her on the forehead saying, "sweet dreams."

I closed her door and proceeded down the hall to my room where Louis was sitting. He was looking at all the posters I had around my room. My walls were covered in them. I had posters from Nirvana to One Direction which was kind of embarrassing considering Louis was in my room.

"I didn't know you liked all these people," He said.

"What can I say? I love music," I said.

I grabbed a big t-shirt out of my drawer and sat it on the bed while I was looking for a pair of shorts. I picked up my things and took a step before Louis grabbed my arm, "You don't have to go in there, you can just change in here."

"No thanks. I'll just go to the bathroom," I said pulling my arm away from him.

What was that number he just tried to pull? We'd only been together a day. Even though it feels like I've known him a lifetime, I wasn't ready for that yet. I slipped my black Rolling Stones shirt over my head and put on a pair of yoga shorts returning to my room. He had taken off his shirt. I didn't know how many tattoos he has gotten now. They look so hot on him. Its a good look.

"I'm gonna go get a drink," I said, "want anything?"

"I'll have whatever you're having," He said.

I walked downstairs into my kitchen pantry. I didn't keep food in here. This is where I kept all my liquor. Don't get me wrong, I don't drink heavily because of Michelle. She doesn't have anyone but me. It is nice to have a drink every now and then. I grabbed a bottle of Scotch, two glasses with ice, and headed back upstairs.

"Hope you like Scotch," I joked.

I poured the drink into both glasses and handed Louis one. I stuck out my glass and hit it on his, "cheers."

I opened up my throat and took back all the Scotch I could. Louis did the same. Minutes later I was on my third glass. I needed to slow down with this. I made a note to myself that I was stopping after the fourth glass.

The room was already starting to spin. I was feeling slightly tipsy. Louis put his arm around me and kissed me on the cheek. I had made a bad habit of smoking about two years ago. I couldn't help it. I was under a lot of stress with school and my parents and it just because a bad habit. I have been trying to quit but I just can't shake the feeling of needing a good smoke.

"Louis if you don't mind, I'm gonna step out on my balcony and smoke for a second," I said.

"I don't mind. I'll go with you," He said, "I do it to."

I grabbed my pack of Marlboro Blacks off my dresser along with a lighter and stepped onto my balcony. I had lights strung around the top of the balcony with lounge chairs. This was where I spend a lot of my time when it was warmer. I got a cigarette out of the pack and handed one to Louis. I kept another for myself. I lit the end of mine and then handed Louis the lighter.

"I didn't know you smoke and drank like that Layne," He said softly.

"I'm sorry if it bothers you," I muttered, "I should've told you."

"It's no big deal honey. Don't worry about it."

"I was never a smoker or a drinker until my family situation got bad. My dad was drunk off his ass 90% of the time and my mom would always smoke around me."

Louis didn't say anything. I got nervous and I kept talking, "I normally don't drink that much considering I have to watch Michelle all the time. I can't set a bad example for her like my parents did for me."

"Layne, this is why I love you. You care so much for your sister, you always put her first and that is a quality not many people have."

I put my cigarette in the ash tray and took another sip of my drink.

"I guess I just don't understand your situation," he said, "I mean my dad walked out on me when I was young leaving my mom with 5 kids. Luckily, she got remarried to a new man who always looked out for us."

He continued to talk about his family situation to me, "Maybe Michelle would like to meet my sisters. I have four you know."

"Of course I know, not to sound creepy or anything but a lot of your fans know that. What are their names?" I asked.

"Félicité, Daisy, Charlotte, and Pheobe," He smiled.

"I think Michelle would love to meet them," I smiled, "We'll have to plan it."

After a while of sitting on the balcony talking about our families we returned back inside to my bedroom. Louis noticed my bookshelf that was full of records and he was in awe with them.

"I didn't know you were in to records," He smiled, "So vintage."

"They were my dads before he passed away," I said.

He flipped through the records until he found one he wanted. He didn't tell me what it was. He put the record in the player and placed the needle down. He looked at me and smiled.

"This song makes me think of you," He said, "Its by Styx."

Styx was one of my dads favorite bands. We would always listen to them when I was younger. I was raised by parents that were pretty much stuck in the 80s so I was familiar with a lot of that music. We crawled into my bed where Louis wrapped both of his arms around me.

"Lady, when you're with me I'm smiling
Give me all your love
Your hands build me up when I'm sinking
Touch me and my troubles all fade
Lady, from the moment I saw you
Standing all alone
You gave all the love that I needed
So shy, like a child who has grown"

"You're so sweet," I smiled.

Things were moving pretty fast between Louis and I but I was okay with it. Yes, we've already said we loved each other but sometimes you just know. I know that what I am feeling is real with him. I wouldn't trade this for anything or anyone.

I woke up with a massive headache. My head was pounding. I didn't even drink that much so I didn't know why it hurt so bad. I quietly got out of bed and tiptoed downstairs. I didn't want to wake Louis or Michelle. I reached up into the medicine cabinet and got down a bottle of ibuprofen.

I took a sip of water to wash down the medicine and went upstairs and crawled back to Louis. I could stay in his arms forever. I stayed with him until he woke up.

"Good morning sunshine," I joked, "How'd you sleep?"

"I slept fantastic," He smiled, "You were with me."

My cheeks turned a soft shade pink. He got up out of bed and walked downstairs while I went to Michelle's room. She was sitting in her bed reading a magazine. I sat down beside her, of course she was reading an article on One Direction.

"What do you want for breakfast?" I asked, "I'm gonna go grab us something."

"Randy's Diner would be good," She said.

I got up from her bed and looked at her before I walked out, "Get up and get dressed. You can't lay in bed all day."

I walked into the hall and shut the door behind me. I walked down the stairs and into the kitchen where Louis was sitting. "She wants Randy's Diner," I said.

"I love Randy's Diner," He said.

"I'm gonna call and place an order. What do you want?"

"Hmm. Get me toast, over easy eggs, grits, and a vanilla coke, please."

I pulled my cell phone off of its charger and dialed the Diner.

"Hello. I would like to place a take out order for Layne please. Yes, I would like to get two orders of toast, three orders of over easy eggs, two orders of grits, a chocolate chip waffle, and three vanilla cokes please," I said, "Okay. I'll be over to pick it up shortly. Thank you."

I ended the call and sat my phone back on the counter, "I'm gonna go get dressed so I can get the food."

"I'll go get it babe, I'm already dressed," He said.

"Are you sure?"

"Yes. I'm positive."

"What about the fans though? I don't want them mobbing you."

"I'll be fine," He smiled. He rubbed my shoulder and kissed me on the cheek, "I'll be back soon."

Louis walked out the front door leaving me in the kitchen. Michelle came running downstairs and pulled out the chair across from me and sat down. She had her blonde hair up in a messy bun. It was adorable on her.

"So what do you think?" I asked.

"I love him!" She cried.

"I thought you would," I said, "I really like him Chelle."

"I can tell. They way you look at him says it all."

"What do you know about looking at someone that way?" I asked laughing.

I walked upstairs to get dressed while Louis was gone. I hopped in the shower, but didn't wash my hair. I pulled my hair up into a messy bun and put on a pair of jeans, a sequin top, and a burgundy cardigan along with a pair of brown boots. I decided to finish off the look with a navy infinity scarf.

Louis arrived back home shortly with the food. He sat the bag on the table while Michelle finished putting plates and silverware down. We all took our seat at the table and started eating our breakfast.

"Michelle, would you like to take a trip to my mom's house and meet my sisters sometime," Louis asked.

"Yes! I would love to," She cried, "That sounds like so much fun. When can we go?"

"Calm down," I said, "That's up to Louis, it's his mom and sisters."

"When would you be able to travel? She still lives in Doncaster." He said.

"Well Michelle and I are out of school for Christmas break December 15th-January 2nd," I said, "If you are down for going on the 15th that is okay with me."

"What is today?" Michelle asked.

"December 1st," I said.

"I'll call my mom and make a plan later tonight," He said. "I have a meeting this afternoon so I will call her as soon as I'm done with that."

"Sounds good," I said, "How long do you plan on staying there?"

"I'm sure my mom would let us stay for as long as we want," He said. "Do you just want to celebrate Christmas with them?"

"I'm fine with that," I said taking the last bite of my food.

After everyone was done with their meal we all cleaned off our plates in the kitchen. Louis gave Michelle a hug goodbye before he walked out the front door. I stepped outside with him and shut the door behind me.

"Thank you for being so accepting of me and Michelle," I said hugging him.

"You are so very welcome," He smiled.

"I'll see you soon," He said, "Call you later."

Louis leaned in to kiss me. We mirrored each other and kissed goodbye. I waved goodbye as he backed out of the driveway. I opened the door and walked back inside. It was time to do some school work since I had a ton of things due tomorrow.

"Chelle, I have to go work on homework. Do you need anything before I go upstairs?"

"I'm fine," She said returning back to her TV show.

I walked upstairs and sat at my desk. I opened up my laptop and pulled up my assignments for Biology. I had to write up a lab report about what my lab group found when observing the cells Friday. I opened up my lab notebook and got to work.

About an hour later I was done with Biology homework. Now it was time to start on this weeks assignments for The Great Gatsby. I was assigned to read chapter 5 and write a reflection on it. I decided to focus on the part of the chapter where Gastby finally meets Daisy again.

I hated this book. It was so boring and overly complicated. It was miserable to read. I wasn't much on reading. I was starting to get overwhelmed considering I couldn't retain anything I was reading.

I stepped outside on my balcony to have a smoke. I sat down in my chair with a blanket and my book and relaxed. I sat my phone on the side table and finished my cigarette. I opened up the book to the last I had read.

*Louis POV*

I drove up to the front door of Simon's house. I hadn't seen any of the boys in a while since we decided to take a break. I walked up the front door where Harry was waiting for me. He pulled me into a big hug, "I've missed you BooBear."

"I've missed you too Haz, how have you been?"

"I've been great. I haven't been up to much," He said, "How have you been?"

I took a step into his house, "I've been fantastic actually. I've been seeing this girl, Layne here lately. She's great."

"Look at you, finally trying to settle down?" He joked. I rolled my eyes and walked into the living room where everyone was seated. I hugged Zayn, Niall, then Liam. I went over and shook hand with Paul and Simon. I've really missed this.

"I've gathered you all here today because it's time to get back on the road," Simon said, "We're going to start recording today."

"Today?" Harry asked.

"Yes. I've already set it up," Simon said. Harry shook his head in disbelief.

"We're going to try to get this album out fast," Simon said, "Follow me."

We all followed Simon back to the studio and sat down in the recording room. He brought in Savan Kotecha who was our vocal coach on X Factor. "We're going to work on the first song today, Story of My Life."

We all had a very active part in writing this song. It was meaningful to all of us. We just didn't think we'd ever record it because we wrote it so long ago. We put on our headphones and waited for the music to play.

"Written in these walls are the stories that I can't explain
I leave my heart open but it stays right here empty for days
She told me in the morning she don't feel the same about us in her bones
Seems to me that when I die these words will be written on my stone
And I'll be gone, gone tonight
The ground beneath my feet is open wide
The way that I've been holding on too tight
With nothing in between
The story of my life
I take her home
I drive all night to keep her warm
And time is frozen
The story of my life
I give her hope
I spend her love
Until she's broke
The story of my life."
