7. Jess's Story- Entry Four

Jess couldn't hold back the scream that had built up inside her. She felt it rumble around in her insides, cause her heart to beat faster, making its way to her lungs, up her esophagus, and out her mouth.

A masked man had just killed her mother.

When he heard her scream, he made a run for it, and she sprinted to her mother's body. It was still warm, but had no life inside it.

She felt a panic attack coming on. Hyperventilating, she curled up beside Harley's body with her head between her knees. She couldn't breathe. Her chest was caving in. She couldn't think. She couldn't move. She couldn't breathe. She couldn't . . . she couldn't . . .

She began to sob.

Jess just cried and cried. The bloodstains disappeared from her face, and the salty tears made the gash on her cheekbone sting.

"I'm sorry, Mom!" she choked, knowing her mother couldn't hear her, couldn't reply, probably would never forgive her. "I-I'm sorry . . . if I was only there before curfew . . . I'm sorry . . . I'm sorry . . ."

Another girl, in a black and gold costume, watched from a rooftop and shared her grief. Before the other girl could go to street level to comfort Jess, though, a tall man with an athletic build approached the skinny, sobbing form.

He didn't make a move until she had stopped crying, until all the warmth had left the dead former killer.

"Hey, kid," the man said, putting an arm on Jess's shoulder.

Jess winced away. "What the hell do you want?"

The man smiled a little. "Name's Coleman Osborne. Looks like you need a place to stay."

"Yeah." Jess sniffed, struggling to compose herself. "What's it to you?"

Coleman was losing his patience. "I know how it feels to lose your mother, kid. You wanna come stay with me?"

Jess thought about it for a moment, then nodded and let him lead her away.

Mom, I promise I'll avenge you. she thought to herself as the body of the high-spirited harlequin vanished from sight.
