Redemption: A Batman Fanfiction

(Takes place 15 years after the events of Arkham City)
Fourteen-year-old Jess Ter Quinn Niche is leading a double life, carrying on the crime reign of her parents and saving Gotham citizens from muggings and robberies. Lately, however, she has been getting anonymous tips from some person called "K"...

10. Coleman's Story- Entry Six

He was slumped against the wall, wearing a fedora, and one of those coats that tie up at the middle. Real cliché.

"Sorry, were you trying to piece together the fragments of your life? I know the feeling..."                Jess wasn't up for this "Piss off." she hissed.

"It won't work." He said calmly.

"What won't?"

"Trying to forget, move on, become whole again. You'll never chase away the ghosts of your past. They will forever haunt your present, but if you're anything like me, you won't let them cloud your future.

"Stop saying that. I'm nothing like you"

"You are like everyone else. You probably think you're different, that you're pain is unique. But it isn't, There isn't a damned soul in this city that hasn't grieved, or been grieved over. Crime runs rampant, "heroes" answer the call of victims, only to capture, not kill, their attacker. They cure the venom, but let the snake live, tend to the effect, not the cause. But without crime pushing it down, oppressing it, this city gets greedy, and from that greed more criminals step forward, and the cycle repeats itself."

Jess was confused. She was tired, and this man spoke too much. She sighed inwardly. She hated to admit it, but this guy seemed to know what he was talking about

"So you're saying we shouldn't fight crime, But we shouldn't commit crime either? What should we do then?"

"We unify. Work together. Imagine it, ex-criminals and ex-vigilantes all working under one leader, with one rule, 'That the people of gotham shall not suffer anymore.' United we stand, divided we fall.But how do we unify age the old enemies, cops and robbers?

"How should I know?" Came the response

"You give them a common enemy, something that forces them to work together, because their lives depend on it. We need a common dread, a nightmare, to unite Gotham through fear. That's why I need you, and your father, and  Jonathan Crane, and anyone else who strikes fear into the hearts of Gothamites. I want to cause chaos in Gotham, so that it learns to organise itself. This is a big thing to ask of you, and a considerable risk to your own safety, but if you help me unify Gotham, I have the money and resources to back you up, and the contacts to make sure that when the time comes, and Gotham has woken from it's nightmare, that you fade away as fast as you appeared. You will be able to live a normal life again."

Jess opened her mouth to speak, stunned at Coleman's plan, and his knowledge about her father. Her father was dead, right? But Coleman cut her off. "Don't answer me now, your mind is clouded. But when you feel ready, You know where I am."

He handed her a small black business card, and walked off into the morning mist.

Jess looked at the card in her hand, dazed. To her surprise, it had no personal details on it, but in the very center, printed skeewiff in gold ink, was a single letter;
