9. Work in Progress

My first mission was to get Kaelee's phone number again. It would make talking to her easier. Considering that we were both working now, and it made communication easier in general, the phone number was my first priority... next to becoming friends again.

"Hi Kaelee," I said to her every morning with a smile.

"Hey," she would always respond. For awhile it seemed like I was getting no where. She didn't open up to me much, and outside of class we had no contact.

"Justin," she said as we left third hour one day.

"Yeah? I responded looking at her. She took my breath away everyday, it was like I was seeing her for the first time all the time.

"What are you doing?" She asked. Her hair was pulled back, and her eyes showed confusion. I was just as confused.

"Walking to my locker..." I said slowly, eyeing her out of the corner of my eye. Today she wore tight jeans, an over-sized shirt that hung off her shoulder and combat boots, her signature. I just wanted to stand back and watch her walk.

"No why are you doing this, talking to me?" She asked, I stopped to look at her seriously. Her face was scrunched into a cute little frown, her fair skin was splotched with red from frustration.

"I want to fix things." I shrugged. "I want to be what we were before."

"I don't know that that is possible." She said. "We are different people now Justin."

"I still see the Kaelee I knew." I said slowly.

"The cowardly dork that no one liked?" She said sarcastically. I flinched, I hated thinking about Kaelee that way. It wasn't who she was and no one would try get to know her.

"I liked you, I still do. You are great Kae. Funny, sweet, smart. You are fun to be around and easy to open up too. You have a hard outer shell, but I know what is on the inside, and I love who you are. You were my best friend, and I am determined to gain your trust again. I won't leave you alone like I did when we were freshman. I won't let go again." I looked at her seriously.

She turned away and said nothing. Kaelee left me standing there, I almost felt like a fool. God she was stubborn.

I'd never admit it, but I was happy that Justin had broken up with Hope and that he was talking to me. I would never let him know that, and I wouldn't make it easy for him. I was still angry, but Justin had been my best friend. I was happy that Hope had done what she had done to him; it was mean to say, but he needed to learn. Bros before hoes, even if I wasn't a real bro. So I left my number in his locker with a note.

'Justin, maybe I shouldn't expect so much from you... but I had your number memorized, and sadly I do to this day. I would have thought you would too. But I will forgive you for this one thing.'

I left school then, not waiting for Justin. I had plans with Anna today and I wasn't breaking those.

"So when are you and Justin gonna hook up?" She asked giggling. We were sitting at the smoothie shop down the road from the mall, it was our regular hang out.

"Oh my god, we are not going to hook up at all!" I said, blushing. "We are just gonna be friends, like we were before."

"Whatever, I see the way he looks at you!" She said. I was really glad that Anna was able to get along with Justin, we could talk together in the hall and it felt normal. I looked at Anna now skeptically.

"What do you mean the way he looks at me?" I asked. I knew my cheeks were red but I didn't care.

"Oh I don't know... Like you are the most gorgeous thing on the planet; if I didn't know better I would think he was in love with you."

"Anna! Shut up, there is no way that he looks at me like that."

"Obviously, you can't see it. You make those same puppy dog eyes when he isn't looking."

"I do not!" I shrieked defensively. We busted into laughter as we left the shop.

I had gotten to my locker late after class, I had to talk to my teacher about my biology test. I had failed three in a row and he wanted to see me after class. I didn't know how I had fucked up so bad on them, but I just wasn't getting a hold on it. I hated science anyway. But when I finally got to my locker, most everyone was gone. I fought with my locker for a moment, trying to open it. Once it opened I saw a small sheet of paper fall out. It glided to the ground, and I didn't really know what to expect. I thought it must have been an old assignment; but when I opened it my heart jumped.

The small letter was signed 'Kae'. I threw my fist into the air in celebration, and ran out to my car. Throwing my bag in the back I pulled out my phone and programmed her number into my phone, I turned the radio up as I drove home and sang my heart out. I had to force myself to wait to text her until I got home because I knew my mom would kill me if she found out I was texting and driving.

'Hey Kae,' I sent with a smile. I waited for a bit, and as the minutes dragged on I felt my excitement lessen.

"Justin, it's dinner time!" I heard my mom say after awhile. I looked at my phone one last time and decided that Kaelee was busy, that's why she hadn't texted me.

"Coming," I said softly and walked downstairs. I could smell mom's home made spaghetti, and my mouth watered.

We ate together silently, aside from Jazzy saying yummy after every bite. She was getting so big, and I was shocked. When I had finished my plate, I told my mom I needed to work on homework and ran back up into my room. I leaped towards my bed, doing a belly flop onto the mattress and grabbed my phone.

'Hey Biebs.' Kaelee had said. Even though I hated that name, I wasn't going to get mad at her for it. I knew that was what she wanted to happen. She would think it was funny. I wasn't gonna let her win that battle.

'Well hello cutie, what have you been up to?' I sent back with a smile and a real smile broke out on my face. I rolled over onto my back and laughed lightly to myself as I thought about Kaelee, so perfect.

'Oh shut up! I was with Anna at the smoothie shop.' She replied. I could imagine her next to me laughing and playing video games like we used to.

'Cool cool,' I typed. 'What are you doing this weekend?' I sent the message and kept my fingers crossed.

'I work on Friday but that's it, why?'

'Wanna come play video games like good old times?' It was a shot in the dark, but I had to try. Waiting for a response now felt like years, but it was only seconds.

'I don't know Justin, I mean I could ask my parents... but,' she let the message trail off there. Part of me knew it wasn't about her parents. She was afraid to be alone with me... or any other boy for that matter.

'I swear I won't hurt you again, and I won't do what Conner did, he fucked up. Kae, I love you and I want to make things right between us. I want you...' I read the message a couple of times and then slowly started to erase it, instead I said: 'Come on Kae, for old times sake. It's just video games.'

'Okay, Saturday?' She asked. My heart lifted again and I was ecstatic. I ran downstairs to ask my mom right away.

'Mom! Can I have Kaelee over on Saturday?" She was putting a movie in for Jazzy, she stood up and looked at me surprised.

"Well, we haven't seen her in a while." She smiled. "I liked her. She is a wonderful girl, pretty to."

"I know mom I know," I said hurrying her on. "We want to hang out and play some video games like we used to."

"Oh god, more video games?" my mom sighed. "A girl doesn't want to just sit around and play video games all day." She threw her hands up.

"It's not a date mom!" I said defensively. "We are just hanging out like friends do."

"Oh okay" my mom said in a sarcastic tone. "Well I still think you should take her out to lunch."

"I'll talk to her about it, but can she?" I asked shaking her softly. This was a critical moment for me and I wanted to be sure I could hang out with Kaelee.

"Of course honey." She said, my mom walked away laughing to herself. A moment later I heard the kitchen sink run and the clanking of dishes. I turned to Jazzy and lifted her into my arms. Even though she was getting big I was still able to throw her into the air.

"Why are you so happy?" She asked giggling.

"Do you remember Kaelee?" I asked.

"I like her." She said.

"She is coming over soon." I smiled and kissed Jaz on the forehead. I set her down again and she clapped her hands happily.

"Yayy Kaelee!" After a moment she turned back to her movie, and I went back upstairs to tell Kaelee everything was a go.

The night had ended perfectly. I was making progress, I was going to see the girl I was crazy about all day Saturday. I had forgotten about my homework until later that night, and my failing grade in biology was completely forgotten about until the next day.

As the days drew near and the week was coming to a close I grew excited and nervous at the same time. It was finally time to go to Justin's. I had put on one of my favorite outfits. For some reason I was trying to impress him. Obviously, we would never be anything more than friends, but I still wanted to look good.

(Ignore the dark hair, cause Kaelee has strawberry blonde if you remember ;P)

I left around eleven, walking down the street to his house. I took the time to calm my thoughts. It was a cool day outside, fall was starting to turn to winter already. I held my arms close to me to keep warm. As I walked up his driveway I saw him look through the window. A second later the door was open. I stepped in and pulled off my boots, glad to be inside where it was warmer.

"Do you want some hot chocolate or something, I didn't realize it was cold. I would have picked you up. Why aren't you wearing a jacket anyway, you'll get sick!" He asked.

"You sound like my mother Justin." I responded laughing.  "But hot chocolate sounds nice." I smiled softly and looked around the house as he disappeared into the kitchen. The house was exactly like I remember, but it was extremely quiet. Jazzy and Pattie were no where to be found. My heart beat began to race a little with fear, I had not planned on being alone this entire day. Being alone with a boy didn't go so well last time.

"Where is your mom and Jazzy?" I asked hesitantly when Justin returned.

"Oh," He scratched the back of his neck nervously. "They went shopping, mom said it was okay for you to come over anyway. She said they would be home at noon. I'm sorry, I hope your aren't too uncomfortable." He said. I could smell the hot chocolate he held in his hands, I took the cup and smiled nervously.

"It's fine. Lets just get to ass kicking." I said softly. "By ass kicking, I mean me kicking your ass."

Justin laughed and ran his fingers through his hair before saying,

"Not a chance." I watched him as he led the way into the basement. Maybe this would work.

We were in the middle of an intense game when my mom came home. I didn't want to stop playing because I was finally winning. Kaelee set down her controller and stood.

"We should help your mom." She said smiling.

"You are stalling the unavoidable." I said.

"What do you mean."

"I mean you losing." I laughed and paused the game.

"Nooo," she said rolling her eyes.

I got up and walked up stairs with her laughing, my mom smiled at the two of us when she opened the door. She had two bags of groceries in her hands, and Jazzy, who was trailing behind her, held one.

"It's so good to see you Kaelee!" My mom set the bags down and threw her arms around Kaelee, who returned the hug graciously. Jazzy walked over to Kaelee and hugged her legs. She picked Jaz up and squeezed her tight.

"You are so big!" She tickled Jaz and I watched them, feeling happy.

"Well lets get these groceries put away!" I said.

After everything was brought inside, Kaelee and I raced back downstairs. Her laughter echoed down the stairwell as we landed at the bottom. We grabbed our controllers and continued the game.

"You know," I said after awhile. I looked at Kaelee, she on her stomach on the floor, her eyes locked on the tv screen. Her focus on the game was extremely cute.

"What do I know?" She asked not looking away from the screen.

"You would make a great mom, in my opinion." Kaelee paused the game and turned around, sitting up as she did.

"Where did that come from?" She asked laughing a little bit.

"The way you are with Jazzy, she loves you." I shrugged. She threw a pillow at me, ruining the moment.

"Don't make it weird. We are juniors in high school you know. I am not gonna be a mother anytime soon." She laughed and un-paused the game; we played for a little while longer.

It was about one when my stomach started to growl, then I heard Kaelee's.

"Well," she said looking at her stomach.

"Do you want to get lunch?" I asked, feeling a little nervous. It wasn't a date, we were just two friends going to get food. Right?

"God yes." She said, tossing the controller aside.

Once again we ran upstairs. I waited as she got shoes on. I called to my mom and grabbed my keys. I opened the door and looked back at Kaelee, god she was beautiful.... simply stunning.

"Do you want my jacket?" I asked.

"You're only wearing a t-shirt." She replied. I shrugged, taking the jacket off and handing it over.

"I am a manly man, I can handle it. Besides I don't want your pretty little self getting sick." I winked at her nodding my head.

"Shut up," she laughed snatching the jacket from me. I followed her out the door and damn, her ass was nice. I shook my head and looked away.

Justin paid for lunch, even though I insisted. It was nice, we didn't go anywhere fancy. Besides, we weren't on a date. Afterwards, we drove to the park. It was usually where we went with Ryan and Chaz.

"What are we doing?" I asked.

"I don't really know." He said honestly. He unbuckled himself and got out of the car. I followed his lead. He was running towards the empty playground, he looked back and grinned widely. I laughed, what the hell was he doing?

"Come on slow poke." He waved his hand towards me. I jogged to catch up to him. He was climbing the jungle gym and sat at the top inside the big slide. I remembered coming here when I was little, the slide could fit a parent and their child in it. He motioned for me to sit with him, I climbed in and sat next to him.

"Okay, we are at a park." I said. My voice echoed within the tunnel of the slide. Justin smiled and shrugged.

"I figured we could talk or something, better than video games all day." He shook his head.

"Nothing is better than playing video games all day, unless its shopping." I joked, he smiled. His teeth were so perfect, white and straight. Every time he smiled I felt my heart lighten, I tried to ignore it now.

"I can't disagree."

"Justin are you cold? You can have your jacket back, I have a sweater I will be fine." I said.

"Naw, it's alright doll." He said with a Boston accent. I rolled my eyes laughing.

"If you get sick, don't blame me." I said.

"Oh I will." He said raising an eyebrow. Being this close to him I could smell his cologne. It was a familiar smell, but it was more than that. It was arousing; I could tell it was Hollister, but he wore it properly. Not too much and not too little. Looking at him closely, I realized how much he had changed. His eyes looked more intense, his arms looked more brawny, and even though he had got a hair cut, it was still pretty long and attractive. The way he dressed was even more attractive, he wore clothes just right. When he spoke I realized how much deeper his voice really was. Oh god.

"You like something you see?" He said running fingers through his hair and biting his lip seductively. I pushed him down the slide and laughed.

"Nope." I lied through my teeth. I watched as he struggled to climb back up the slide.

"Well I like what I see." He said winking again.

"Don't make me push you down the slide again." I said.

"Seriously Kae, you look amazing. Not that you didn't before, I just mean..." He looked away. I laughed and nudged him.

"Thanks." I said softly.

"Kaelee..." He looked at me, his brown eyes searching mine. Holy fuck, what was going to happen?

"I am sorry... I was stupid and because of that I wasn't able to be there for you when you were hurting. What happened with Conner, I feel terrible." He didn't look away from me once.

"I know, and it's okay..." I said it slowly. I wasn't sure what to say next.

"Good," he said. I heard him move and felt him take my hand. It was warm in mine and softer than I thought it would be. I wasn't sure what to do, so I did nothing.

"Justin..." I said slowly.

"Kaelee wait.." he stopped me. "I won't let anything like that ever happen again. It was hard enough seeing you walk away from me heartbroken, unable to do anything to help you. I won't be that guy again. I am gonna be there for you no matter what. You will never be alone again."

"Justin, really its okay." I looked at him then and saw the sadness in his eyes. Suddenly, I was aware of how close we actually were. I could feel his breath on me as he leaned close. He licked his lips lightly, his eyes trailing from my eyes to my mouth, and then he bit his lips a split second before closing the distance between us. His hand never let go of mine. His lips were warm on mine and I closed my eyes and leaned into him more. His free hand touched my cheek.

Realization set in, and my breath hitched as I leaned away slowly. Justin took a deep breath and looked away, letting go of my hand. He ran both hands through his hair and bit his lip again. My entire body was tingling. My face burned, and I was paralyzed. I glanced over at Justin again he was rubbing his hands together.

"Damn, it's cold. We should get going, I could use a glass of hot chocolate myself." He slid down the slide quickly and waited at the bottom. I hurried to the car.

After warming up at the house, we played a few quiet rounds on the xbox before he drove me home. It was a pretty quiet ride, but as we rolled up to my house Justin spoke.

"Kaelee, I didn't mean to..." I held up my hand.

"Let's not worry about it." I smiled, trying to ease his anxiety. I opened the car door and stepped out. As I did I could feel his eyes on me like I had all day.

"Oh Justin," I said leaning back into the car. "If you stare to hard I will end up with holes in my back pockets."

"No promises." He winked.
