Chapter 9 - Suspicions

How To Use The Death Note

“The human who becomes owner of the DEATH NOTE can, in exchange of half of his/her remaining life, get the eyeballs of the god of death which will enable him/her to see a human’s name and remaining lifetime when looking through them.”

“A god of death cannot be killed even if stabbed in his heart with a knife or shot in the head with a gun. However, there are ways to kill a god of death which are not generally known to the gods of death.”

JM stepped outside having navigated the crowd and saw Nero stooping over something in the distance. No doubt the book that had seemingly fallen from the sky.

He had seen it fall from the corner of his eye and had wanted to investigate almost immediately. However, the notion of Nero also going after it – and beating him to it – had not occurred to him. Much to his frustration.

JM hesitated to call to Nero, conscious that Nero had seemed to be trying to lose him in the corridor. If he called to Nero now there was no telling how he would react.

Instead he hid in the shadows of the doorway and waited, guessing that Nero would head back inside and head straight for the library, or possibly the canteen. The first half of his assumption proved correct as, a minute later, Nero came round the corner. JM reacted by opening the door slightly and bumping into Nero in a single motion, giving the impression he had only just come outside.

Nero started, dropping his bag and the book, which fell from his jacket and landed facedown on the ground. He picked up the book first, pushing away JM when he moved to pick it up for him, stuffing it into his bag rather hastily.

‘Oh, hey Nero,’ JM said coolly as they both straightened up. ‘I was just looking for you.’

‘Well, you found me,’ Nero groaned dismissively, nervously placing his hand over the exposed spine of the book. ‘What do you want?’

‘I wanted to know if you wanted to join me for lunch. You weren’t in the library, so I looked for you out here,’ JM replied, smiling. ‘So how about it?’

Nero stared at him, almost scornfully, and gently pushed him out of the way. ‘I was just about to go to lunch…why did you think I would be out here?’

JM shrugged and held the door open. ‘I just had a hunch.’

‘Hmph. Fine, come on.’ Nero headed inside, and JM followed closely, almost walking at his side, his eyes fixed on the gloss black book that Nero seemed so protective of.

‘What’s with the book?’ JM asked in an attempt to find out what it was.

Nero glanced at him and lifted his hand off the book slightly. ‘You and your questions,’ he muttered resignedly. When JM did not move away from the subject he sighed quite audibly. ‘Fine, I’ll humour you. I went outside because I saw my diary on the ground. I dropped it this morning.’

JM nodded suspiciously. What could be so special about that book that Nero was outright lying about it? Clearly Nero was not aware JM had also seen the book fall. Nonetheless…why wouldn’t he talk about it? ‘Diary, eh?’ he inquired, playing along. ‘That why you wouldn’t let me touch it.’

‘Exactly,’ Nero lied, stuffing his hands into his pockets.

JM copied him and walked with him the rest of the way to the canteen, his eyes not shifting from the spine of the book, questions buzzing in his head. ‘You’re a worrying guy, Nero,’ he thought once he quieted the questions. ‘If I hadn’t know any better, I would have been convinced you were telling the truth…
