Chapter 3 - Mary

How To Use The Death Note

“After writing the cause of death, details of the death should be written in the next 6 minutes and 40 seconds.”

“This note shall become the property of the human world once it touches the ground of (arrives in) the human world.”

As Nero left the library and JM sat at the table, a third pair of eyes looked between them, lingering more on Nero than JM.

Those eyes, in their dazzling blue, belonged to Mary Cotton, one of the most popular girls in the school, and also one of the only people who paid attention to Nero.

She never told anyone she watched him, knowing quite well how her supposed friends would react. But she enjoyed the attention, so she allowed them to fake the friendship. She only interacted if they approached her.

But Nero…Nero was almost the kind of guy she would be happy to approach. Almost. If it wasn’t for his disdain towards most people – especially the more popular people – she would have talked to him ages ago.

‘What are you looking at, Mary?’ one of her “friends” asked, her arm draped around her latest victim – or boyfriend, as she called him.

Mary shrugged. ‘I don’t know. There’s not a lot to look at around here.’

‘Well as long as you’re not looking at Tony,’ her friend continued, suddenly shifting her attention away from Mary.

Mary sighed as the door closed and Nero disappeared, and turned back to face her clique, adjusting her tank top in the process, just in case she had revealed anything.

Fortunately, no one noticed, all of them being too preoccupied by themselves. In fact, the only person to look at Mary was the aforementioned Tony, who Mary rolled her eyes at. ‘Eyes on your girlfriend, Tony,’ she sighed.

Tony blinked and snapped his eyes to Mary’s friend who had, thankfully, not heard.

Mary was very much aware that if her friend had heard, it would be herself, not Tony, who received the brunt of her anger. She sometimes wondered why she even stuck with the group, but always remembered that, as part of the clique, she had refused herself entrance to any other group that could be found in the school.

Geeks, Goths, Emos, Sport-Fans…no other group would be willing to accept a Popular, or even an ex-Popular if she made that choice.

She knew that everyone thought the same thing. “Once you’ve been a Popular, you’ll have the Popular inside you.” And although she hated this idea, she knew that in many cases it was true.

With the rest of her friends either deep in discussion – likely bitching about someone – or preoccupied by their boyfriends, Mary felt like an unnecessary accessory, so decided to stare at JM, just to see what he was doing.

It felt slightly unfair that he be allowed to talk to Nero, yet she was stuck on the other side of the room, which was probably too close for comfort in Nero’s opinion.

She sighed, and as she did JM’s head turned to face her. He met her eyes, and she swallowed. Would he frown? Would he smile? Would he show her the finger?

JM cocked his head slightly, and held up a strip of gum.

Mary looked back at her friends and then jumped over the chair, hoping her skirt didn’t fly up too much. She walked over to him as casually as she could, and then sat, folding her legs in case he was a pervert.

JM noticed this and chuckled. ‘Don’t worry, dear. You didn’t leave a lot to the imagination when you jumped over that chair.’

Mary stammered and, to avoid shouting at him, snatched the gum from his hand, unwrapped it and started chewing. She did, however, frown at him.

‘I’m simply jesting. I saw nothing…’ He paused and watched her chew. ‘Are you enjoying the gum?’

Mary sighed and nodded. ‘Yes, I’m enjoying the gum…strawberry, right?’

‘Yes. Now…did you work that out by looking at the wrapper, or by the taste?’

‘What, did you invite me over here to question me?’ Mary snapped.

‘No…but I can if you want. For example, why were you staring at me?’ JM said, amused. He threw a piece of gum in his mouth and stared at Mary. ‘Well?’

‘Um…’ Mary was uncertain whether to admit why she had been looking at him, or to make up a lie. It was well known that JM could see through a person’s lies.

‘If you don’t want to tell me, I will just assume you were hoping you could get some homework help,’ JM said, chewing slowly.

Mary chuckled. ‘Yeah…yeah, that’s what I wanted.’

JM nodded and smiled. ‘Well, I can’t help you there. I make a habit of not helping people with their homework.’ He leaned back as much as possible considering his seating position. ‘In my opinion, the best way to help someone is to make them work without help.’

Mary looked down at her lap. ‘Right…but, um…would you still be willing to give me some advice?’

JM chuckled and placed a hand on Mary’s knee. ‘About what? About how to approach Nero Kagami?’

Mary started and instinctively slapped JM’s hand away. ‘How did you work that one out?’ her mind screamed.
