3. Chapter Three

Winter clutched her flashlight in one hand, a piece of paper in the other.

Always watches, no eyes? What does that even mean? she thought to herself.

The only sounds were her steady breathing, the quick thumping of her heart, and the wind blowing through the leaves. She would never admit it, but she was afraid. More afraid than she'd ever been in her life.

It's just a stupid high school initiation, she thought to herself, trying to calm her rattled nerves.

Suddenly, she heard a loud dun! and looked around in a panic. It's okay, Winter, you're okay. she soothed herself, continuing to move foreward.

That's when she saw it.

Ohmygodohmygodohmygod it'sokayit'sokayit'sokay he's not as tall as he looks. It's just one of those idiots dressed up to scare you.

"Scott Jenkins?" she called, naming off the tallest member of the group. "This isn't very funny..."

"That's not Scott Jenkins." a somewhat familiar voice answered, and a pale boy jumped in front of her before she could see his face.

Long tentacles extended from the tall . . . thing, and finally she was able to see that it didn't have a face.

The tentacles wrapped around the boy and lifted him a couple of inches off the ground. He glared at the being.

"Slendy, I told you. We're not killing this one."

Slendy stayed still for a minute before dropping the boy. A voice entered her head. "You'll pay for this," it said, and Slenderman vanished.

The boy didn't show her his face.

"Who are you?" Winter asked.

"Honestly, I'm surprised you haven't figured it out already." he replied gruffly.

"Well, maybe if you'd show me your face . . ."

"Showing you my face would be pointless, Butterfly."

Faintly, she remembered the nickname from her childhood. That's right . . . her cousin . . .
