9. Chapter 9

Mia met me outside of school holding a bag of chips out to me. I tilted my head "why'd you get me chips?" I asked her.
"Thought you might be hungry, so what you doing after school?" she asked.
"I don't know yet" I'm not used to people being this forward.
"Well let me know, maybe we can hang out" she smiled sweetly at me and left me alone. I stood there a little startled as I finished off the bag of chips. What just happened? Next lesson was English, Mr Wilkinson after last lesson I'm not too thrilled about going back. I noticed an empty chair next to Mia and Lily and I froze looking at both of them. I chose to sit on my own, that way I have no distractions. Mr Wilkinson gave us an assignment for the lesson, to write a painful experience in your life. I asked Mr Wilkinson to come over to me and he did. "Do we have to read these out?" I asked him.
He nodded "then I won't do it" I told him putting down my paper.
He looked at me, his eyes squinting "excuse me?"
"You heard me" I said loudly, causing the rest of the class to stare at me.
His face reddened "then get out."
"Why?" I half shouted
"Because you're not doing as you're told Reiss, and that is unacceptable."
"I will write it, but I don't want it read out. I don't see anything unreasonable about that" I shrugged.
"The point of this assignment is to present your work to the class. So I will give you one more chance will your or will you not do what you are told?" he asked sternly.
I lost my voice and stared off into space losing everything I wanted to say. Lily coughed and then she was beside me tugging on my arm. Looking from her to him, she pulled me out of the class and pushed me against the locker. I closed my eyes and held her arm as she stood there quietly.
"Reiss you need to do this, forget how hard it will be" she said quietly.
"I can't" I rubbed my hands over my head.
"Then just write it, get it off your chest. If you feel like reading out then do it" she told me.
I wrapped my arms around her waist and pulled her close to me. She looked up to me "come out with me tonight."
"I don't know, Mia asked me too" I sighed.
She pulled away from me "oh."
"It's not like that, I don't think of her in that way" I assured her.
"It's fine Reiss, I know you don't want anything to happen with us" she said.
"It's not that Lil, I like you, I've never liked anyone before" which was the truth.
"Then come out with me" she said.
"Okay" I smiled at her and kissed her forehead.

I decided to skip the rest of the lesson and plan on writing it at home. I can do this I know I can, it's just something I need to get over. Mia sat with me at lunch her expression showed annoyance but I didn't care enough to question it. After 10 minutes of looking off into space she turned to look at me and frowned. "I don't want to tell you how to run your life, or what decisions you should make, because I believe in you enough to make them." I let her continue as I didn't have the heart to stop her, and part of me was intrigued to see what she would say. "But you need to be careful with the people you choose to spend your time with."
I sat away from her and raised my brow "Lily you mean" a pet hate of mine is when people don't get to the point.
She bit her lip "I've known her for a long time, let's just say you're not the first new boy to catch her eye" she shrugged.
"Mia stop I don't care about people's pasts, it's who they are now. Besides nothing is happening with me and Lily." Even though I knew that was only slightly true.
"She's troubled Reiss, and I mean really her parents died last year. She's had sex with most of the year, my best friend..."
"Stop" I snapped at her "this isn't your life to share Mia, this is wrong" I shook my head disgusted.
"It's coming out all wrong" she whined rubbing her eyes, "I'm only trying to protect you."
"Trust me I can protect myself" I said getting up off the table and walking away from her.

It was after school and I waited outside the school gates for Lily, a cigarette hung from my lips. Lily pulled it out and took a drag before passing it back to me "let's go" she clapped her hands and pulled my arm. She took me to the park I had my encounter with those guys and I wrapped my arms around myself thinking of the memory. She sat down on the ground and pulled me down so I was sitting opposite her.
"I want this to be our safe place" she told me. After last time I think I'll have a hard time thinking that. "I want you to be able to talk to me here about anything, and I for you."
I smiled shaking my head "Lily we could be anywhere, here, at mine, at yours. It's not the place it's me, I can't do this" I said getting up off the ground. She sat there looking up at me "what happened to you Reiss" she mumbled. I looked at her and bit my lip, "a lot" I replied to her question and looked down at the ground. She stood up making her eyes level with mine and wrapped her arms around my waist. I took hold of her hands and pulled them away from me "I have a question" I said to her.
"Okay" she bit her lip and blushed.
"Why do I need to stay away from you?" I asked her tilting my head.
"Excuse me?" she said a little taken aback.
"Mia badgered on to me at lunch about you and I ignored it."
"Obviously not" she rolled her eyes, "she doesn't like me very much" she admitted. "I can't blame her, I went out with her brother for a year and broke up with him" she sighed.
"Why did you break up with him?"
"I was in a bad place, and I threw it away because I could. Sometimes it's not nice having power over things, because you waist it."
"What about her bestfriend?" I asked raising my brow.
"I don't see why I should open up to you, and you give me nothing in return" she pointed out and I understood.
"You have one question" I told her sitting back down on the floor crossing my legs.
She thought for a second joining me on the floor "why can't you speak?"
"Ask me another" I told her cringing at her choice of question.
"No" she said stubbornly "or I won't answer any of yours."
I closed my eyes finding the words to say and nothing came. My forehead began to sweat as did my arms and legs. I heard her sigh as she said "okay another question you say, are you a virgin?"
I laughed at her choice of question, until my expression changed "no I'm not."
