6. Chapter 6

As we walked down the streets if the kingdom, Roman held my hand gently in his, not really in too much of a hurry. As we walked the streets turned from big houses and quiet streets to small, poor houses and children playing on the streets. Shops were set up along the street and people were milling through it going every which way. Roman stopped me at a small store that had jewels hanging from the windows. This was one for the few shops that weren't covered over by a tent. Bells clanged as we opened the door and a small but full man moved busily behind the counter. As we approached I noticed he wore a bronze band on his arm; which would have marked him as a slave if he didn't live in our kingdom. He noticed us and gave us a scowl, probably because he was so busy. That was until he noticed who I was,

"Oh! Princess Callista! Welcome to my shop!" The man said with a smile, I gave him a kind face back and then looked up at Roman. He wasn't looking at me, he was looking at the jewels in the encased shelf. Then, he pointed out a necklace,

"Can you bring me that necklace please?" Roman asked the man, he nodded and quickly brought him the necklace. It was a diamond necklace but it was made out of a steel chain rather than a silver which would quickly burn someone with lycanthropy. Or if they were a werewolf in general. The diamonds formed a little crescent moon. It was amazing,

"That is about 5 gold coins." The merchant said to Roman. He dug out a small bag that he untied and pulled out 5 coins and handed them to the man. The merchant nodded and went back to normal and we walked out of the shop. He clasped the necklace around my neck.

"You didn't have to do that Roman." I said feeling guilty.

"No, I did. Besides now you have something that you can remember me by and it looks beautiful on you." He responded with a sweet smile; taking my hand in his. We went farther down the street and it seemed like the farther we went the more the shops turned into a market or bazaar. There were tents of all colors that I have never even seen before. He led me to a stand where an elderly lady was next to a pot of soup and freshly baked bread. Roman must have noticed me staring at everything because he nudged me.

"Have you ever been to the lower class?" Roman asked.

"No, is this what lower class is? I've never seen this before." I said, he grunted and let out a laugh.

"Of course you haven't I'm guessing you've only ever been to the rich and middle class of the kingdom and training?" He asked and I shrugged, feeling embarrassed I turned away. He had caught my waist and spun me around so that he was close to me. He said in a whisper to me, "It's not a bad thing, you're royalty I get it." He added. He pulled away and turned towards the woman.

"How many, Roman?" He woman asked, her hair was gray and she was skinny but she still looked young for what she probably really was. I was confused that she knew his name,

"Only two please." He said with a sweet smile. I could tell she was not a wolf either by her face. She had a small face but when she smiled she had cat like teeth. Roman spoke something to her in a different language that I didn't entirely understand. She chuckled and squeezed his arm. He handed her a gold coin which I knew was overpaying her. She got him two bowls of soup and two loaves of bread. We sat down on a bench near the stand. I looked down at the soup and back up at him, I was hungry but I didn't even know what this was.

"What it's not poison." He said with a chuckle before dipping his bread into the soup and eating it. I finally ate some and it was delicious I could honestly say it was better then my mom's soups for once.

"Woah, Slow down!" He said as I noticed that I was eating way faster than I should be. I blushed as I set the pretty much empty soup bowl down. As I did it felt like the earth rumble underneath me. Roman was already up and on his feet. I didn't see what was going on until the crowd parted to reveal to grown men fighting each other. One was already turned into a bull and the other was turning into a huge bear. I wanted to jump in there and break up the fight but Roman held me back. "Don't it's not worth it." He said to me. I was hesitant, I didn't know what was the right thing to do. I let Roman led me away but I felt weak and bad that I didn't intervene. We came to a small house, Roman opened the door and we walked in. It was beautiful, though it was small it was homey, a fireplace crackled in greeting. He had a couch that was near the fire place and art hung from the walls. I wondered how he could afford all the things in his house.

"This is my place, sorry I didn't clean up before you got here." He said scratching his head.

"No, no it's beautiful." I responded. He smiled,

"Thanks." He went to the kitchen and started to put away dishes, I sat down on the couch before I spoke up again.

"So what's up with you and Jarien? You must have known each other since you both came here at the same time. So what are you guys? Friends? Rivals?" I asked, the question was bugging me all day. He looked like he tensed up.

"We are friends, really good friends. We look out for each other when we were in a lower clan. He sort of stopped being my friend after I got him in trouble though." Roman called. He finished putting the dishes away and came over to sit down next to me.

"What did you do?" I asked, hoping I wasn't invading his privacy by asking. He pinched the bridge of his nose and sighed.

"It was stupid. In our clan they had people who weren't wolves as slaves. Well I didn't think it was right; and even though Jarien told me not to do it I didn't listen to him. I ended up trying to free some of them and since Jarien tried coming after me in a fit of rage. When the clan leaders caught us they thought he was in it too. They banished both of us out of the clan and I wish I could get him to forgive me for that but you can't always forgive people." Roman said looking somewhere distant. His eyes showed sorrow. I took his hand into mine and gave him a comforting look.

"I'm so sorry Roman. I know I don't exactly know how you feel but I am here for you okay?" I said to him and his face softened.

"Thank you, Callista." He said, he was still hurt but something else seemed to play on his face, like he pitied me. I figured I was imagining it and dismissed the thought. I looked up at him and grabbed his face, bringing him towards me. I fitted my lips to his and kissed him lightly. He seemed surprised but he cupped my face and brought me back to him. He pushed my body, which was hovering over him, into his body. He let out a low growl and picked me up, I giggled and looked down at him.

"What are you doing?" I whispered into his ear.

"I want to fall asleep with you, I've never slept with anyone." He whispered, gingerly kissing my neck. We tumbled onto his bed and I smiled at him. His eyes looked like they twinkled and he brushed a strand of hair out of my face. I felt a little awkward as he stared for a long time, not saying a word.

"What?" I asked him.

"Just taking all your beauty in." He mumbled before he pulled off his shirt. He scooped me up in his arms and tugged at my shirt a little. I pulled mine off and he looked me over. He was there kissing me and he let out a low growl, my hips fitting with his and our fingers lacing with each other.

That's how they stayed for a while. Kissing and cuddling, unaware of what was going on just outside the house. Callista was uncomfortable for showing her body to a stranger, Roman assured her that she was stunning and convinced her not to be afraid. Footsteps tapped lightly on the rooftops as they ran towards the castle. Men and women, some vampires, some other animals like big cats and others slithered along the houses as snakes. As they made it to the castle the broke in, taking the kingdom by storm. They took the King and his wife hostage, some of their comrades getting killed in the process but that was expected. They were looking for the princess, but she was not there and had not been for some time.
