9. A Light in the Dark

((WARNING: Self-harm in this chapter! I absolutely DO NOT support self-harm, but it fits this part in the book and it's only fiction, I'm adding it. Please don't ever self-harm, no matter what you think it's not the right answer. No matter what you may be feeling, no matter what your thinking, there is always someone who loves you and wants you in their life, whether you know it or not.))

"No!" I whisper, his words sending chills down my spine.
"Oh, sorry. I just... nevermind..." Harry trails off, and I turn to stare at him in confusion, until I realize that he thought I answered his question.
  I shake my head.
"I- he- yes, he's David," I murmur, looking down at my lap, tears brimming at the thought of him once more.
"Oh," they say together, seeming frozen for a moment in recognition as I answer their question truthfully.
It doesn't last long though because Niall kneels before me, grabbing my hand, his blue eyes watery.
"Katie, would you please tell us what happened? With David, I mean," he clarifies, looking at me hopefully.
No. No, I can't give into them. Not like this, not at all. I feel as though I might crack and tell them the whole story any moment though while I'm around them, so I do the only logical thing. I rip my hand from Niall, standing up and pushing past the boys, moving away from them easily with a couple strides.
I whip to face them, tears silently streaming down my face as I realize how close I was to telling them. My eyes meet theirs, still sympathetic, though slightly harder than before as they stand, approaching me slowly.
"Just stop!" I shout suddenly, and they do, though only for a moment, out of surprise.
"Why, huh? Why me? And don't give me that bullshit about 'not thinking that way because it'll put me down', because here's the truth: you've officially ruined my life. No and's, if's, or but's; you've done it. You kidnapped me, and destroyed what I had built up, my upper hand. I was hidden from him, protected. Hence the 'was' though, because you broke that. Now he knows where I last was, and he's so much closer to finding me now," I fire while sobs rack my small body, but surprisingly I stay strong through until the end, where my voice cracks and I have to stop.
"Wait, what?" Liam asks, dumbstruck along with the others.
I stare at them in utter confusion, shaking my head at their stupidity.
"Oh, of course you don't understand. You're all off in your 'Land of the Famous', where every goddamn thing is absolutely perfect. Well open your eyes. Reality is fucked up, as far from perfect as you can get," I spit venomously, when a horrible idea pops into my mind, yet it's somehow manages to form an image of relief in my mind.
I flick my eyes to them, seeing they're far enough away right now for this to possibly work. Glancing at the door in attempt to throw them off from my real plan, I fake running to it with a quick step, and they fall for it, dashing towards the door while I on the other hand spin  to face the opposite way, towards the stairs. I dash up them, taking them two at a time as I hear their shouts near me from behind, but it's too late. I'm already there.
I slam the bathroom door shut behind me, locking it with shaking hands as my sobs still haven't ceased. Fists pound on the door mere seconds after I close it, and I back away from it, wiping at my tears.
"Katie, open the door," Niall says, and I hear his fist collide with the door once more.
Several more join in as I turn to the sink, looking for my dreaded item. I spot it with hesitant eyes, but pick it up nonetheless. Staring at the razor for a moment longer, I throw it on the floor, stomping on it to release the blaze from the plastic. The pounding on the door ceases, silence filling the small room as I grab the blade from the floor with a shaking hand.
"No," I hear whispered from the other side of the door, and I realize they were listening to see what I was doing.
"No!" one of them gasp, and I recognize it to be Louis.
"Katie, don't do this to yourself. You've got so much to live for. Please, open the door," Liam's voice calls to me through the door.
I shake my head, sinking to the floor, before I realize they can't see me.
"You don't know anything," I mumble, guiding the blade towards my wrist.
I place it hesitantly above the delicate skin on my wrist, knowing one swipe of the sharp weapon could release so much pain. I wouldn't have to worry anymore. No more running, no more hiding from him. Dare I say his name, David will no longer haunt me. I could be free of this, free of it all. The stress, the pain, the fear
"I need this. I just need it to all go away," I find myself murmuring as I pull my knees to my chest, my eyes locked on the precarious situation before me.
One slice, one little movement. That's all it would take. I just have to find the courage.
"No, Katie. You don't have to do this. Just listen to me, alright? We can help you. Open the door," someone says, though I realize it's Zayn.
His voice is soft, gentle even. I'm surprised by this, as the vibe I usually get from his is hatred, or maybe disgust.
I can feel myself shaking. I don't want to die, but I don't have anything more to live for. Thy say they want to help me, yet they got me into this situation in the first place. Ellie, my sweet, sweet Ellie was taken from me, and this could be my chance to see once more, to never let her go again.
"It should have been me," I find myself murmuring over and over, just barely a whisper.
"I'll see you soon, Ellie," I whisper as I bring the blade onto my wrist, gasping loudly at the sudden pain as crimson blood falls from my wrist, slow at first, but eventually flowing at a steady rate once I remove the blade.
My vision darkens, and suddenly the pounding is back against the door.
"No!" someone shouts, but I can't tell who it is.
My vision blurs, and suddenly I can't feel the pain in my wrist anymore. The blade falls from my
hand as I slump against the wall. A loud crash sounds before me, but I can't seem to keep my eyes open any longer. They feel so heavy. I know soon the blackness will take me, and I'll be with my sweet Ellie once more. I see blurry movement in front of my face, a hand maybe?
Someone is trying to talk to me, but I can't make out their words. My body feels weightless, and suddenly the darkness is trying to pull me with it. I let it, falling peacefully into it. If this is death, then it's nice. It's calm, gentle. Not like the constant surge of roughness we know as life. I open my mouth to call out to Ellie, to find her, but I can't seem to form the words.
Suddenly, white surges around me, replacing the dark and blinding me for a moment. My eyes sting in pain, but it quickly fades. I look around me, but see nothing except white. My body feels overwhelmed with joy though, and I feel free at heart, like all my worries and fears have been lifted from me, replaced by pure joy and happiness. This must be heaven. This joy, this light, it must be heaven. A voice sounds behind me, startling me but that fades the instant I recognize it.
"Katie," she says, and I spin to see the one person I've missed the most; Ellie.
She wears a long white dress that flows and moves along her like it is a part of her. It appears to be made of light, as I can find no seams and it radiates a soft glow. Her golden hair is pinned up in an elegant bun, and I can faintly see a golden circle resting on her head. A halo.
"Ellie," I whisper, overwhelming joy flooding my at the sight of her.
I want nothing more than to run to her and engulf her in a hug, but my feet can't seem to move.
"My dear Katie," she says, her eyes soft and her voice perfect, smooth and rich like caramel.
"What have you done to yourself, Katie? It is not your time yet," she says, smiling sadly at me, her eyes crinkling in such a familiar way it almost hurts.
"But I wanted to see you. I want to be here, Ellie. Why can't I be here now?" I ask, instantly confused by her words.
Is she saying I can't join her yet? That I can't be here with her? I don't understand why though.
"I know. You have seen me now, but you must return. There are people waiting for you. You were wrong when you thought you had no one left, so wrong. There are still many who love you Katie, and they are waiting for you to return to them. Your time to join me will come, but it hasn't yet. Your story is a hard one, Katie, one you shouldn't of had to experience, but it's what makes you who you are. Don't be afraid to share it, I can't tell it's stressful not being able to talk to anyone about it," her voice rings, flawless and beautiful.
"But Ellie, you're the only one I've ever shared it with. It's not the same without you. I know it might sound selfish, but I need you," I reply, tears springing in my eyes.
"Oh Katie. I know you miss me, and I miss you too. But remember I'm always with you. Don't be afraid to open your heart up. You have people who love you, people who can take up the empty parts of your heart. Since I left you, you've locked your heart away. But you don't need to. Now, go back. You need to wake up, Katie. You don't belong here, not now. So wake up Katie. Wake up," she finishes, and the white around me disappears, along with Ellie as she flashes me one last smile.
"Wake up, Katie, please. Please wake up," I hear, though it's distant, softly calling me.
A speck of light appears in the distance, and the voices calls from it, beckoning my towards it. While the darkness tries to pull me down, the tiny bit of light calls me up. I fight towards it, and it appears brighter the closer I get.
"Wake up," the voice is loud, and suddenly I'm reaching into the  light, warmth bursting through me as I pull into it.
