3. Cousins

Merida and Wee Dingwall entered the dinning hall and were shortly stopped by the many people in the room, to be congratulated on their engagement. Merida had never seen so many people packed in one room she swore the entire kingdom was here as well as her own extended family. After struggling to get through the crowd, Merida finally reached the head table.

"Mother!" Merida hissed as the queen greeted some guest whom Merida had never seen before.

"Shush lassie, don't be rude!" Queen Elinor eyed her daughter.

"But mum!"

"Merida no."

Merida huffed then ran to her father who was entertaining the lords, badly.

"-with one dead eye, I drew my sword-"

"Aye Merida, what is it lass?" her father said turning to her. The lords seemed to be relieved at the sudden break from the story.

"There's someone at the door and-"

"HELLO!!!!" a clear and shrill voice rang through the hall.

Everyone stopped talking and all turned to the main entrance.

A tall thin girl with blue eyes and freckles was standing next to a group of men all adorned with helmets and furs. Vikings.

Merida saw her mother go white and her fathers grin was wiped off his face. Vikings were on his side of the family, the side that was never talked about, and was never invited.

"Sorry we are late!" the girl continued. "Seemed there was a mix up in the invitations, but we made it just the same."

A tall lanky boy about Merida's age (18 now) looked fierce and ready, but his eyes gave him away. You could tell he was hurt or sad, by what Merida couldn't tell.

"Why have you come?" King Fergus said standing. His voice was hard and seething.

Merida had never seen her father angered, that was usually her mother's trait.

"To celebrate of course! Our dearest cousin is getting married and family is family after all. Uncle."

"You are no niece no mine, away with you now!"

Suddenly a loud roar unlike one heard before sounded above the castle.

"Oh I was so afraid of that." the girl said. She looked the the lanky boy and nodded.

He nodded back and stared straight at Merida before she could blink he had his knife at her throat and a black large dragon at his side. Merida couldn't even process how a dragon could be in the dinning hall, or that there was even a dragon in existence!

"Lets try this again!" the girl called.

Everyone turned to look at her all had fear in their eyes as the dragon bared its teeth at them.

"We have come to celebrate or we kill your princess. Is that clear!"

"You have no rights here. The laws forbid ye to come here." King Fergus roared.

"Unless invited..." the girl pulled out a tattered wedding invitation from her belt.

There was silence. The boy hold Merida muttered into her ear.

"I'm sorry , but you better do something before she gets on a frenzy!"

Merida on slightly nodded.

"Enough talk!" Merida shouted. The blonde girl looked at her.

"This is to be my celebration. Join us if you wish."

"Now this is what I am talking about! Let her go Hiccup." the girl said.

Hiccup removed his knife and motioned for his dragon to back off. The girl strode over to Merida and extended her hand. Merida moved forward and extended her own.

"Welcome to DunBroch castle, I am Princess Merida and I welcome you all."

"Pleasure is all ours cousin Merida." the girl said bowing slightly.

"Aye, its mine as well, cousin Astrid." Merida said.
