9. A deal is made

The next morning Merida woke with the sun and was out of the castle faster than Maudie chasing after the boys. Hiccup was to be waiting for her in the woods as she marched down the worn path. Taking a glance towards the shores, she could barely see the massive ships on the horizon. She predicted she had at least two hours before Wee Dingwall would reach the castle. Shaking the thought and adjusting her bow and quiver she wandered deeper into the woods. Hiccup was there as promised, but there was something different about him, he would not meet her eyes.

"Hi there," Merida tried.

"Hi." he said grimly.

"Is there something wrong?"

Before he could answer a flash of golden hair whipped past her and suddenly her arms were bound.

"Agh! No! Hiccup!"

Merida was tackled to the ground and her bow was ripped from her hands. A gag was tied around her mouth and she began to feel woozy. She looked up to see Hiccup embrace her cousin who laugh evilly as she threw her head back.

"Hiccup, you didn't." was all Merida could say before darkness over took her.

When she awoke, she found herself in the viking's camp ground, a majority of them carried axes and hammers and knives. The dragons were also surrounding  them. She looked around on saw Hiccup who was hiding in the back, adverting her gaze. Merida had never felt so hurt or such anger in her life. Finally Astrid came into view and walked straight up to her.

"All of you leave us!" she demmanded.

The crowd dispersed except Hiccup and Toothless. They remained silent as Astrid carried out the last pieces of her plan.

"My apologizes cousin, we've not spent any time together since my arrival, and I fear it is time for us to part." she began.

"What is is you want Astrid? Enough of these games, I wish to return home."

"Oh you will, but first a payment is required."

"Aye, what payment?"

"In exchange for peace, you will supply me and my crew with enough gold to make our lives well."

"And?"

"That's all."

"What's in it for you?" Merida spat.

"That, is none of your concern."

"Fine. Release me."

"One more thing, you are not to tell anyone. If you do we will burn your kingdom to the ground. I have a long journey ahead so I would not test my patience, cousin."

"Alright. Then when you leave you are never to return as long clan DunBroch is in power.

"Very well. Oh but do be quick. I do not like to be kept waiting., and remember not a word to anyone, or your family gets it."

"I swear it. You will have your gold."

Astrid flashed her wicked smile and motioned for Hiccup to release her. As she left Hiccup cut the ropes binding Merida's arms and legs. Once she was free she stood and struck Hiccup across the face, knocking him backwards. Toothless barred his teeth, and a low growl echoed in his throat.

"I deserved that."

"Shut up! You lied to me! You betrayed my trust."

"Merida I-"

"I said shut it! Let me be so I can get your precious wife her gold and get you out of my kingdom. I should have never trusted an outsider. I should never have trusted you." she spat.

Merida stormed out the camp just as Wee Dingwall was making his arrival. She could not face him now, and she ran to the castle all the way to her bedroom. Locking the door behind her she fell on to her bed and cried.  An hour later a knock signaled it was time to get ready and she cleaned her face and opened the door. To her surprise it was Wee Dingwall himself.

"My lady, princess, are you alright?" he asked concerned at the sight of her hastiness in getting ready.

"Yes I'm fine." Merida said clearing her throat.

She threw her arms around him, shocking the both of them. He took her left hand into both of his and brought it to his lips. Merida glanced out her window, the sun had risen entirely, and the feast would begin.

"I'll meet you down in a moment there is just one errand I personally must run." she said to him.

He nodded and left her chambers. Once she was positive the hall was cleared she dashed from her room to the castle treasury and filled three satchels to the close with gold pieces,

"This had better keep them out of her forever." Merida muttered under her breath.

As arranged, Astrid sent Hiccup to retrieve the gold. Merida not willing to breathe the same air as him, threw the satchels out the window nearly knocking him out.

"Hey!" Hiccup grunted as he dodged the heavy bags.

Merida merely scowled then shut the window. She turned away and sighed. There would be no more family issues, no more vikings no more dragons, and certainly no more dragon riders. Now she just had to make it to tomorrow, where she would vow herself to Wee Dingwall, and live as happily as she could. She hoped.
