3. Diagon Alley

Finally, Wednesday had come. Sydney had woken up extremely early and showered and dressed. She pulled on jeans and a loose but, nice shirt and her worn out cowboy boots. She had just recently moved from Southern California and her country roots had stayed with her. I am never going to be a Londoner. She thought to herself. She did her hair in a side braid and then headed down stairs to eat breakfast. Her mom had cooked eggs, bacon, and toast for breakfast. She ate quickly and her mom drove her to The Leaky Cauldron.

It took them awhile to find the small pub and they arrived right at 11:00. They spotted Professor McGonagall with two other kids. One, a girl was average height with brown hair and dark brown eyes. The other, a boy, had black hair and blue eyes, that held a hint of mischief in them. He was about as tall as Sydney. She walked over and introduced herself.

"Hi, I'm Sydney Hill," she said with a smile.

"Annie Burt," said the girl and shook Sydney's hand.

"Jonathan Haws," said the boy and he also shook her hand.

"Let's go," said Professor McGonagall and she led them through the pub and out into a small brick alley way. She tapped the bricks with her wand and they started pulling apart until they formed an archway. All three kids stared in amazement at the many wizards bustling around the many shops. They saw many kids their age running around in excitement. McGonagall led them to a large white building that many wizards were going in and out of. "This is Gringotts, the wizarding bank," she explained. "Anybody would be a fool to rob it," she said as they followed her to a tall desk straight across the room. There were goblins examining precious jewels and counting gold, silver, and bronze coins.

"Muggles coming to exchange money?" asked the goblin at the front desk. McGonagall nodded and he directed them to a large box, where they inserted their money and it spat out gold, silver, and bronze coins. "The gold ones are Galleons, the silver are sickles, and the bronze are knuts," explained McGonagall. "Seventeen sickles to a Galleon and twenty-nine knuts to a sickle."

They exited Gringotts and headed to Madam Malkins for their robes and then to Flourish and Blotts for books. Sydney loved to read so she picked out a few extra books. They stopped and picked up their cauldrons, telescope, and bronze scales, along with a few basic potions ingredients. They headed to Eeylops Owl Emporium for pets. Sydney picked out a snowy owl, Jonathan picked a barn owl, and Annie got a tabby cat.

Last, but not least they headed to Ollivanders. There was a sign that said Makers of Fine Wands Since 342 B.C. They entered the dark shop where boxes upon boxes of wands were stacked on shelves. A small old man with white fuzzy hair appeared. "Aha new customers," he said. He pulled a wand from the shelf and handed it to Annie. She gave it a wave and a warm gust of wind blew through the shop. "Just the right one! Unicorn hair, birch, 10 inches, whippy." Ollivander said. Annie payed him and stood off to the side. He then handed a wand to Jonathan which didn't work. He tried a few more until he found the right one. "Thestral tail hair, yew, 11 3/4 inches, slightly springy." Jonathan payed and stood with Annie.

Ollivander started handing wands to Sydney, but she could not find the right one. After twenty minutes of searching, Ollivander pulled one of the very top shelf and handed it to her. She gave it away and wind started blowing through, cleaning all the dust off the boxes. "I believe we've found the right one! Phoenix feather, aspen, 11 1/2 inches, unyielding." Sydney was happy to pay him and walk out of the shop. Annie, Jonathan, and her all chatted about what it might be like at Hogwarts.

They  exited Diagon Alley and Sydney was sad to go. Her mom was waiting for her in the Leaky Cauldron and she said bye to Annie and Jonathan. She followed her mom to the car and drove home. She ran upstairs to her room and she packed everything into her trunk. She immediately plopped down and started reading one of the books she had gotten. She came upon a name that she really liked and named her owl Rowena.
