26. The Heartbreaking News

The boys, after some debating, ended up cleaning the house. Harry, was the first to grab the broom, I think it’s cause I said "if you don’t clean up for Marisa, you are going to be in trouble." Either it was because of the threat, or better yet, he likes Marisa. Oh la, la, harry likes Marisa! Haha I shouldn’t say that cause I really don’t know if he does. The girls and I hop into the car and head on down town. Marisa didn’t say a word, well, no-one could get a word in because auntie Jessy was going on and on about who is going to be sitting where at the wedding and who is going, who is going to be a brides maid and who the maid of honor will be and didn’t even mention once where the first stop would be and what style of dress she will wear. When we were going down town to get the dress. I looked in the rear view mirror while driving (Jessy was ment to be my fully licensed passenger for me because I'm on my L’s) and saw Marisa sitting so quiet and nervous staring out the window as if she was concentrating on something the was outside.

"are you alright Marisa?"

Jessy continued the mindless babbling of her wedding and Marisa snapped out of whatever trance she was in and looked at me with her sweet big blue eyes.

"y-y-yes. Why do you ask?"

she looked at me like I was weird.

"well you looked sad, that’s all."

She smiled at me.

"well I'm fine. Believe me, I am."

Silence between us continued. Unlike Jessy, she was still babbling. At a stop like I flicked my eyes to Marisa again.

"you know what Marisa?"

she looked up again and smiled.

I smiled at her back.

"Jessy can drive back, I'll sit in the back with you and we can chat and get to know each other."

Her smile grew even more, which made me so happy that she could finally be confident. That’s when I had a brilliant idea.

"do you like horses Marisa?"

she beamed up at me

"yes, I love them! I use to ride but I was never as good as you. What's your barrel racing personal best?"

I was surprised that she use to ride, she doesn’t look like she likes them.

"well, what was my personal best? I was always beating it and I could never remember what it was. Oh! I remember now! It was 10.85 seconds."

He jaw dropped and her eyes looked like they were about to pop out of her head.

"are you serious! That is amazing! Who taught you?"
I looked down and my smile was gone only being replaced with a small tear and mournful smile.

"my mum."

The smile dropped from Marisa’s face as well, and she lent forward and with hesitation placed a hand on my shoulder.

"I am so sorry, if I had of known I wouldn’t of even considered asking. I am so sorry."

I placed my right hand over hers and rubbed it.

"it’s ok, you didn’t know and you don’t have to be sorry, it’s not your fault she’s gone."
I let go and so did she. The screwed up her face and looked back at me.

"you’re a cowgirl right?"
I nodded my head

"do you believe in God?"

I laughed.

"that is such a stereotype. But no I don’t"

confused, she asked another question

"why? Isn’t that the soul of the country people?"

I looked back at her

"well I don’t believe in him because if he was real, why would he take someone who never deserved to die so damn early, and fill them with tumors and cancer? And leave all the people in this world who kill people and rape and abuse others? Why is he so cruel like that?"

she looked at me with raised eyebrows

"that actually makes sence."

She said looking out the window

"I still pray to him. I send messages to him for my mother, I still pray because we all need someone or something to believe in and I only have a fraction of faith for this so called god. I don’t see him as a god, I see him as a blind monster, oblivious to the lovely people and animals in this world and he keeps the worst for here on earth. Do you believe in him?"

she looked back from the window and at me

"well, I'm kinda in the same boat as you. I don’t believe in him but I need something to believe in I guess. I don’t trust him. If he takes all the amazing people in this world and leaves the devils themselves than what makes you so sure that your safe? How do you know that he wont take you early like your mother for example? If he doesn’t than the devils will take you instead."

I just sat there

"wow, that was good. You actually took the words right out of my mouth. But what scares me even more is the fact that he put breast cancer into my mother and then the doctor telling me that I am the most seceptable to getting it next or if I have a daughter, she will be either a carrier or will be diagnosed with it."

Marisa looked at me with sad eyes.

"oh my god Sarah, that’s terrible. But if you do have it, you know that everyone in that house will help you conquer the cancer, and same if your daughter ends up with it, we will all help her and you."

By now my lip is quivering and tears are pouring out of my eyes. I have to keep wiping them so I can see where I'm driving. Luckily my makeup didn’t run. I pull into the car park and it took me at least 10 minutes to find a park. By this time Jessy had shut up and was helping me find a park. We were circling the car park going around and around in circles, trying to find the one park that could get us into the shopping center and look for that dream dress! When we did, we didn’t realise that we were all the way over the other side of the car park and the furthest away from the doors.

"you couldn’t find a closer park?"

Jessy playfully bantered with me putting her arm over my shoulder. We started walking towards the shops.

"so how often do you get to go out Marisa?"

there was no response.

Jessy takes her hand off me while I spin around looking for her and I see her sitting in the car with her hands on her lap and tears streaming down her face. I sprint towards the car, not paying any attention to what was going on around me, weather there were cars or not, I just ran.

I open the door and unbuckle her seatbelt and pulled her out by her hand and pulled her into a hug, as she slid to the ground. I sat on the ground with her and Jessy crouched down next to her.

"hey, hey, hey, shhhh. It’s ok. Your alright."
She finally stops and has calmed down.

"what happened?"

she just clung to my shirt even tighter and with a shaky hand she pulls her phone out of her pocket and shows me the latest message. Once I read it, I was mortified. I knew what she was feeling and just hugged her even tighter handing the phone over to Jessy.

"shh. It’s ok, I promise you it gets better."

Jessy read the message and her face went white and joined in the hug.

The message was saying that her mother, Rose Ivashkov, died on the way to hospital. She was in a car accident. The drunken driver was on the wrong side of the road and was killed too.

"did you want to go to hospital or go home?"

I offered, knowing it would hurt to much seeing her in hospital right now. But you yearn to see them now.

"I want to go to the hospital."

I looked over to Jessy and she had that look on her face.

"I don’t want to take her, I have things to do!"

she mouthed to me. I looked at her like ‘you have to be kidding’

"you are taking her, I am going to notify the others and we will arrange something for her."

I mouthed back cradling a vunerable Marisa in my arms rocking her back and forth trying to calm her down.
