Safe And Sound (Triquel to Red)

"Elizabeth Ashton was more that just a girl to me. She was my best friend, she was the love of my life, she was my light. Since the day I met her when we were 5 years old there hasn't been a single day that I didn't love her. Without her, I wouldn't be the man I am today. She taught me so many things. She taught me to never give up on myself and to never let anyone tell me who I am, who I want to be. She taught me to believe in myself even when no one else did. Through the 15 years that I knew her, just the thought of her made me smile. Now I can't help but look back on all of the memories we made. The pillow fights, the sleep overs, the ghost stories. She made me happier than anyone else ever could. She put a smile on my face even when I was on the verge of tears and she always knew what to say. So much of the world knows Elizabeth Ashton as the girl who broke free from her past and created a future...

58. Runaway

***Beth’s POV***

I gazed out the window solemnly, watching the white flakes layer the ground. I felt so alone and yet, I wasn’t. My cheeks were stained with tears, my lips dry and cracked. It felt like my world had come crashing down in just one letter. An accident is different from a murder. In a car accident, no one planned to kill the victim. They were just in the wrong place at the wrong time. But a murder? A murder is planned. He planned to kill my mother that night. That’s what hurts the most. I stood up, wrapping my arms around myself as I began pacing quickly.

“How.” I whispered, looking at Liam.

“How what?” He asked.

“How can someone just wake up one morning knowing they’re going to kill someone?” I choked out.

“I don’t know.” He told me softly.

I stopped pacing and looked at him. “He woke up that morning and he knew he was going to kill her. He knew he would loose his wife. He knew his daughter would loose her mother. He knew Liam!”

“Beth please calm down.” I whispered.

I narrowed my eyes at him. “Calm down?! Liam! I just found out that my father killed my mum and you tell me to calm down?!” I cried.

“Getting mad at him, crying over this won’t bring her back.” I heard him mumble.

My eyes widened. “Wow Liam. That’s low. That’s just low. And to think I had someone by my side who actually understood.”

I stormed out of the room only to walk back in again and grab the car keys out of his pocket.

“Beth come on!” He shouted after me as I stormed down the stairs.

As soon as I walked outside I could feel the cold wind against my skin.

“Beth!” Liam called after me as I reached his car.

I unlocked the door and got in, slamming it after me. As Liam ran down the path I started the car and began pulling out of the driveway.

“Beth that’s my car! How am I supposed to get home!?” He asked frantically.

I rolled down the window. “Walk!”

I rolled it back up again and sped past him. I drove for what felt like forever. A few times my vision got blurry because my eyes were so built up with tears. How would he say something like that? Of all people he should understand.

Finally I found myself at my old high school. I slowly got out and walked over to the football field that was now covered in snow. I sat down in the middle and just laid there as small flakes of snow fell. I could feel my phone buzzing in my pocket but I didn’t take it out. I needed to think. Questions filled my mind.

How could he have been abusing her and I not know? Why did she never tell me? How did I not see through him? Why? Why did he kill her?

I sat there for what felt like forever. The tears on my cheeks had long dried and my mood had calmed. I cannot change the past. I can only change the future.

“Beth!” I heard Liam’s voice call from behind me.

I didn’t turn around, I just stared at the white flakes that fell around me.

“Beth.” He said softer, coming closer.

I could see him sit down beside me in the corner of my eye. For a while neither of us said anything. I finally broke the silence.

“You know, I used to come here to think. I’d sit right here in the middle of the field and look up at the sky.” I whispered.

“Why?” He asked.

“It made me forget everything. For just a few minutes I could be in a whole other place. No abuse. No forgotten friendships. No dead parents. For once I could just forget.” I told him, looking down at the snow. “And when you said what you did, it brought it all back. I needed to think.”

“I’m sorry okay? I didn’t mean it like that.” He told me.

I looked down at the snow then back up again. “No. You did. You meant it. You’re right. Nothing I say or do will bring her back.” I stated with no emotion.

“While that may be true, what I said was selfish and rude.” He told me.

I still didn’t look at him. “No. I shouldn’t have gotten mad and run out… and taken your car.”

“Stop blaming yourself.” He whispered, pulling me into his lap. “I’d rather have you take my car than have you walk.”

I didn’t say anything. I just sat there in his arms for the longest time. After a while he spoke.

“Now lets get out of the cold. Tomorrow is Christmas Eve. Lets be happy okay?” He said softly.

I nodded and stood up. He stood up after me and together we walked back to the car. I handed him his keys and we got in.

“You’re not mad at me are you?” He asked as he pulled out of the school.

I shook my head. “Not at you. No. The world. Yes.”

We both stayed quiet for the rest of the drive. There was not much to say anyway. Finally we reached Liam’s house and we got out and walked up to the front door. He opened the door for me and we walked inside.

“We’re back!” Liam called.

“In the kitchen!” Ruth called.

Liam and I walked into the kitchen and saw Ruth, Nicola, Chris, Luke and Nick standing around the kitchen. I looked at Nick and Luke and smiled.

“When did you two get here?” I asked.

“About an hour ago. Its good to see you Beth.” Luke smiled, giving me a hug.

“Its good to see you too.” I smiled.

I hugged Nick as well and took a seat at the counter.

“So where have you two been?” Ruth asked Liam and I.

“We were at my old house.” I sighed.

“We found a letter that her mum had written before she died… it basically confessed that Beth’s father had abused her mother. We also found out that her mum didn’t die in a car accident. Her father killed her.” Liam sighed.

Everyone was silent as they tried to process it. By the looks on their faces they were both shocked and horrified.

“It horrifies me that a father can do that to his own family…” Nicola sighed, still in disbelief.

I nodded slowly. “Well my father isn’t like most.”

“Beth I’m so sorry.” Ruth said, hugging me.

I sighed. “Its in the past. Nothing I say or do is going to bring her back.”

“Yeah. And your father is where he belongs.” Nick said to me.

“I’m not sure he’s in hell yet but he’s close.” Nicola pointed out.

We all nodded in agreement. Liam was right. He’ll get what he deserves. Its called karma.
