20. Kam & Mum

As promised, Kameron and mum insisted on going out the following day, even thought I hardly wanted to get out of bed. It had been such a late night and I was really too tired to get up until noon at the earliest.

After eating, showering and getting dressed, I was shoved into the car and Kam insisted on putting a blindfold over my eyes.

I kindly refused but Kam wouldn’t budge and saying no to Kam was like saying no to a shark. The word just wasn’t in her vocabulary.

The drive seemed extra long because of the blindfold. It was very disorienting for Kam to have to put on my seatbelt and take it off, telling me how to sit and where to put my hands. It was even worse when she made me get out and walk. My mother scolded her for trying to run me into a pole.

Mum opened a door while Kam nudged me in, keeping her hands on my shoulders. Wherever we were, it was oddly quiet and still. The only sound I could hear at all was that of Kam, mum and I. That is, until a familiar voice came breaking through my thoughts.

“Why does she have a blindfold on?”

Much to my surprise, I smiled. “What is Harry doing here?”

I heard a smack. “I told you not to talk! She knows your voice too well! It’s the one she dreams about.”

“How was I t’know?” I heard Harry say while I could feel my cheeks blushing.

“I don’t dream about his voice-,” I said quickly, not wanting Harry to think I was weird.

“I would know,” Kam said. “I’m the one who hears you sleep talk.”

“Where am I?” I asked, changing the subject. I was tired of being kept in the dark, I hoped that Harry didn’t hear the part about my sleep talking, thought nothing of it or didn’t care. It was embarrassing of Kam to say in the first place.

Kam quickly took my blindfold off, taking a chunk of my hair with it. She laughed while I scowled. “Here Harry, a lock of your fair maiden’s hair.”

“Ew, Kam,” I exclaimed, snatching the hair from her hand. “Don’t be gross, he doesn’t want that!”

Harry laughed heartedly while my mother scolded Kam. “Stop bugging your sister, it isn’t nice, nor becoming in a lady.”

“Why am I here again? And at the boutique, no less,” I stated, beginning to get agitated.

“Kam, go fetch the surprise.”

As Kam scurried off into the back room, I let out the breath I had been holding. I turned to Harry, about to apologise when Kam came scurrying back, a piece of paper in her hand, to which she handed me.

“A piece of paper?” I asked incredulously. I looked at Kam who lost her smile and rolled her eyes.

“Unfold it dit-twit.”

“Kam!” my mother scolded.

I did as Kam said, unfolding the heavy paper and I was shocked at what I saw. There in the middle of the picture was a sketch of me, wearing the most beautiful emerald dress.

“It’s for graduation,” she explained. “That’s the ones that we all preferred.” She have a sweeping of her hand to indicate the three of them.

“You helped?” I asked Harry.

“Of course! It wasn’t much, but my decision was the one that counted.”

I rolled my eyes at his enthusiasm.

“Here darling, let’s get you measured. That way the dress can be ready when we see you on Spring Break. You can try it on then and we’ll do any last minute changes then.”

My mother pulled out the measuring tape then and as I looked over at Harry, I longed for it to be just the two of us. I knew that I only had to wait until tomorrow, but for now it seemed like forever.
