9. A Cup 'O Soup

When I woke I was laying in the familiar bed that I had always slept in when I was visiting mum, but the scenery had changed.

The walls around me were a deep red instead of the plain white that I remembered. The ceiling above was painted an off white, the beautiful galaxy that I had gotten Kam to paint me now painted over.

My mother never consulted the changes with Kam or I, her room now a dull blue, but I knew that they were with the best interests in mind. That was the one difference between mum and dad. Dad would never do something like that without talking to us about it but mum would go ahead if she thought it was what was best. She was trying for Kameron and I to become the mature ladies that we had always been, but in truth it stung that I could no longer star gaze.

I looked to the window only to see the dark cloudy sky and the streetlights. It was supposed to be sunny in New York but it was night in London and I had never felt so awake. Glancing at my phone I noticed it was 10 in the evening. Only beginning the night in New York.

Stepping out into the hall, I noticed that Kam’s door was open. She must not have been able to sleep either. I padded quietly down the stairs to the kitchen, where my mum was talking quietly to Kameron in the breakfast nook area, both clutching steaming cups of soup.

“Can’t sleep mum?” I asked curiously, taking a seat between them.

“No,” she gave me a smile. “I haven’t tried yet.”

“Where’s John?”

“He’s in bed already. Has to get up early to head into work. He’s trying to get it all done before the holidays actually start. He’s going to pick up Sam sometime this weekend because he’ll be finished classes for the semester.”

“Are we having Christmas here?” Kam asked.

My mother shook her head. “At John’s parents.”

Kam groaned, earning a glare from our mum. “Kameron don’t make a fuss.”

“Last time I went there they pinched my cheeks and called me ‘darkling’,” she stuck her head on the table to emphasis while I giggled.

At my response my mother softened. “I’ll have John talk to them and try to have them see reason.”

“Thank god,” Kam muffled from the table. I chuckled again.

My mother rolled her eyes, announced she was heading to bed before telling us to do the same soon. “You’re both coming into work with me tomorrow so you better be rested!” She quickly pushed her untouched cup of soup over to me before giving me a wink and walking off.

I grabbed the spoon before digging into my soup. It was a delicious minestrone.

“Have you talked to Harry yet?” Kam asked, her head lifting off the table just enough to eye me with a sly smile.

“No,” I said curtly, a little hurt that she would bring it up again. It hadn’t changed since the last time she had asked.

It had been nearly two days since I had last seen or heard from Harry, sitting next to him on the long plane ride.

“Then you need to text him,” Kam implored, her eyes widening in fear. “He’s Harry Styles! From One Direction! Court, you have no idea what could be in this for you.”

“Kam, I’m not looking for a famous relationship! I’ not looking to have the paps standing on our front lawn. I would hate to have everyone knowing what your going to do or your mistakes. I want something normal.”

“You want him to be like Elijah.”

As Kam said the name, it literally hurt to hear. Elijah had been my first serious relationship and we had lasted a year and a half before he broke it off at the end of the summer. It had already been four months but I couldn’t help the memories that would surface every now and then.

“I don’t think I’m ready,” I confessed.

Kam shrugged. “If you’re not ready now, when will you be?”

There was a pause of silence as I let her words sink in.

“I don’t know.”

“Courtney, I see the way you look at Harry and I see the way he looks at you. His mates told me he can’t stop thinking of you or talking about you-“

“I think it’s frightening for you both. You have to be the one to go and take a chance because if you don’t it will just pass you by in a flash.”

“When did you get all wise?”

“I’ve always been this wise. Mum just likes to add ‘ass’ on the end.”

With a laugh I hugged her, finished my soup and headed to bed.
