34. The ambush

That evening after tea I rushed upstairs and packed then I shoved the bag under my bed and waited. Half an hour later Molly walked in and went to bed, I waited until I could hear her breathing flatten out and become regular then I grabbed my bags and pulled on a coat. I headed down the corridor to where the boys sleep. I rapped on the door and as if on cue Dylan walked out of the room with two bags and a coat on just like me.

“Are you sure you want to do this we can turn back if you want,” Dylan said frowning, “I don’t want this to hurt you.”

“I can’t wait until they find us not again,” I said tears in my eyes, “It was too horrific to repeat so I’m not going to go through that again.” I looked him in the eyes he had a hard look glinting back at me and also something else a look of pain for what is happening and for me. I looked at him but kept my expression hard.

“Are you ready then cause if so let’s go,” Dylan said and we walked down the stairs and straight out of the front door. We kept walking down all the back alleyways and shadowy streets to keep out of the way of both the switchers and Mason and Molly. It was dark but being night time that was no surprise and neither was the fact that everything was silent.

“So where do we go from here?” I said smiling, “Cause I made the plan to leave so you have to decide where we go.”

“Ok I know just the place,” Dylan said looking straight at me, “But you’re not going to like where it is.”

“Where is it?” I said starting to wish I wasn’t here and I wasn’t sure whether I should agree to where we are going.

“Right in the middle of the switcher’s main area,” Dylan said frowning heavily and sighing, “So you still want to go then or not?”

“Yeah come on before they all come out hunting,” I said and we ran off in that direction. Halfway there we ran into a group of them not on purpose but we did. There were three of them in total the one at the front was a stage four I could tell by the fact he grunted instead of talking to us. The one to his left was a young girl stage one which made me feel deeply sorry for her. The last one on the right was a stage three old man who looked surprisingly healthy for his age. The three of them all had clothes that looked like they were starting to decompose.

“You look horrible,” Dylan said which was the understatement of the century let alone the year. The one at the front grunted and charged towards us with his baseball bat held high spikes glinting in the early morning light. The other two screamed and charged after him.
