20. 5 years earlier- A long way to go

After we had packed Rebecca checked that the coast was clear and we left the house. It was already dark outside on the street and we spent about 10 minutes to find our footing on the pavement so that we could walk onwards.

“Oh this is ridiculous,” Miranda said sounding frustrated, “I can’t see a thing in front of me I hate it.”

“Calm down Miranda,” Lucas said shakily, “Trust me you don’t have the biggest problems.”

“What is that supposed to mean?” Rebecca said angrily, “You never talk a word of sense anymore Lucas.”

“He has never made sense,” Mason said taking the lead, “He just talks a load of rubbish.”

“No I don’t!” Lucas said sounding like he was in pain, “Maybe you don’t know what I’m going through but it isn’t fun trust me.”

“What’s your problem,” Rebecca said angrily, “Why are you acting like such a child.”

“Enough!” Mason said staring at us until we get halfway to London we are not talking do you understand if you want to talk then do it quietly. But no arguing.”

“We all understand right guys?” I said smiling sweetly around the faces.

“Yeah sure,” they all said in unison frowning. So for the rest of the journey south we were supposed to walk in silence. It was very boring and I gave up after five minutes and started talking to Lucas.

“So are you sure you’re ok,” I mumbled quietly as we walked together; he pulled me to one side and whispered softly in my ear.

“No honestly I’m not ok Angel,” he said his eyes wide, “But it would break your heart to know the truth and also I don’t understand it myself so I’m sure it’s nothing.”

“What I don’t understand what’s going on,” I mumbled feeling guilty, “Why are you talking like this you’re scaring me?”

“Just remember that I will always be here for you even when I’m gone,” Lucas smiled solemnly and I was about to ask what he meant but I knew that he wasn’t up for talking anymore.

“So,” Mason said turning around to face us, “Anyone tired because I am.”

“Yeah I’m tired to lets set up camp,” Miranda said leaning on her brother’s shoulder, “Please I’m so exhausted.”

“Ok then it’s settled we’ll sleep here for the night,” Mason said as he started to unpack, “Come on guys help me.” I looked up at Lucas but he wouldn’t look me in the eyes.
