12. Back At School

As Dalia was hopping along the corridor, her silver crutches clanking with her, when she spotted Mr Wright, the old man who had found her and found himself a job as a maths teacher those six weeks ago when she'd had her injury. He looked out for her constantly now and was also great friends with her parents, so she saw him regularly. He had become something of an uncle, or godfather, but either way, Dal liked it.

"Hello Dal! Need any help there?" Mr Wright shouted cheerfully, waving his slightly-too-full cup of coffee around and splashing it over the edges. He cursed, but Dal just snorted.

"I'm fine, Mr Wright, but do you need any help?" He laughed and shook his head, bending down to mop it up with a crumpled up sheet of paper.

"Well, if you need anything, just come and see me. I'm always here, just down that beautiful corridor!" Dal rolled her eyes as she passed him and he patted her on the back before dashing down the stairs. This time, he dropped the coffee all over the floor. Dal chuckled as he glanced back at her over his shoulder.

"Mum?" Dal shouted up the stairs as she arrived home.

"I'm in the living room, just come in, poppet." Dal did as asked. Her mother was perched on the armchair, reaching for TV remote; it was time for 'Real Housewives of Beverly Hills', which for some reason, Lucy, even though she was the most intelligent woman Dal had ever known, had a crazy obsession with.

"Not this again! Please tell me you aren't going to turn it on?"

"No, sweetie, I'm not. Instead, I'm going to tell you the news."

"And that is...?" Lucy inhaled deeply and Dal knew it was big.

"I know that this will seem very upsetting for you, but...please don't be angry, Dal...your father and I...we're...getting divorced." Dal's mouth almost dropped to the floor. Divorced?!

"But...but...but..." And she fell onto the sofa and started to cry. Her life was so unfair.
