124. 'You're Both Such Idiots.'

I'm hopping down the stairs, beaming at everyone I see on my way to the huge food table in the lounge. Everything is beautiful in my path and I wait patiently for anybody who blocks my way to move.

I watch Lola and Chloe run up the stairs, in the opposite direction to me and the two kids, who were talking to Harry earlier, are trailing behind –trying to catch up with them.

It’s like I’m looking at everything in a more beautiful, positive way. The whole house and everybody’s faces shine with optimism and a silky, golden glow. I find my way past the crowds of families and friends and into the dining room. That’s when I bump into two of my friends for the first time since they all snuck out whilst Harry was kissing me. I still have to pinch myself each time I think about it –just to make sure it was real. Harry Styles kissed me. I laugh in the back of my mind, he kissed me…

"Look at those cheeks!" Louis reaches over to pinch the skin above my cheek bone. It only hurts a little bit so I roll my eyes and grab a plate from the table. "She can't stop smiling. Look El!" He's right. I can't stop smiling, which also means that I'm having real trouble trying to glare at him. It causes the pair of them laugh even more.

"Where's my buddy Harry then?"

"Upstairs still."

"Hmm..." Louis looks down at the plate I'm holding, already stacked with bread, pizza, hotdogs, salad, turkey trimmings, mini burgers ad chips. "Managed to take a food break then?" I smack his arm and Eleanor assists me with the payback for his suggestive comment.

"Actually we've both been talking."

"Yeah... Lots of talking, I bet." I resist the desire to hit Louis again and just smirk as he rolls his eyes. "You're both such idiots."

I'm taken aback by his comment. The problem with Louis is that he's always so humorous that sometimes it's hard to tell the difference between when he is and isn't joking.

"It was a joke. And a bad one at that Lou." Eleanor assures me before evilly poking Louis with humus covered bread stick.

He reacts as if its poison and reaches for a napkin to rub it off with straight away.

"Actually," he starts "it wasn't a joke! He's an idiot for liking you from the first evening and not telling you up until now, but you're an idiot for not noticing that he's been infatuated with you ever since."

"Just go and have some fun." El winks at me before roughly pulling Louis away -who waves crazily. I have to take a guess that he's a little bit tipsy. I get the feeling that he wasn't supposed to say that. I shrug it off and grab a few sweet things to add to mine and Harry's picnic.

Now that Louis' told me it's starting to make sense. Harry was the one who came out to find me on the first night that we met. He's the one who's looked after me ever since. I am an idiot -or maybe just a teenage girl in denial of an idea too perfect. I must have seen the way he looks at me at least once. In fact, I know I have, I've just been denying myself the right to see it.

I pass by the living room, were it blares music and I can see most of the Little Mix girls dancing in a circle with Sophia, whilst Jade sits on a sofa talking to her boyfriend, who must have turned up a short while ago. Niall and Rosie are sitting down too, talking about something interesting as they both nod and shout I've over the music into each other's ears.

I can see Justin and Carla coming towards me, smiling in my direction and clutching hands. They are literally such a cute couple. Maybe someday Harry's and I... Forget it, I tell myself, he kissed you but you don't know what's going on between the two of you... yet.

"Hey!" Justin swings around me, pulling Carla around in the direction of the stairs. "I heard you made out with Styles! Nice one."

They leave with a wink, and a few chips from the plate I'm holding in their fingers, before I have a chance to ask him to be quieter about it or push him in annoyance.

I'm walking up the stairs, just reaching the landing when Liam runs into me and nearly send all of the food flying. "Sorry, sorry! Oh, it's you. Have you seen Soph?"

"Downstairs! With Perrie, Jesy and Leigh-Anne."

"Good job that!"

"What?" I can hardly hear him.

"Don't worry! Thanks." I'm just about to carry on walking when he catches my arm. "You having a good time?"

"Yeah, it's good."

"I'm glad." I think I can see sympathy in his eyes... "I'm sorry about last night by the way. We should have been there to-" so that's what it's about.

"It's okay. It's not your fault. You guys think your super heroes and you might save lives, but you can't be there for everyone. Not all the time. That's just impossible." Liam looks away guiltily. "Don't worry about it, I'll talk to you later. Okay?"

He nods and ducks around a small circle of adults.

Seconds later I'm up the second flight of stairs and entering the den. "I'm back."

"Cool." Harry's lying flat on his back on the cushions, with his camera poised above him and his long curly hair combed over his eyes, rather than being in it's usual slanted quiff.

"Harry? What are you doing?"

"Instagram." I make a small 'o' with my mouth and laugh. That explains it. His idea of 'selfies' don't normally involve the common idea of just a nice picture of his face. Sometimes I worry about this boy.

"You took ages." He moans.

"There's quite a few people out there you know. And most of them stopped to talk to me or ask about you."

"What did you say?"

I pull a face that's in obvious thought. "Well I told this one woman that I'd recommend the mince pies and chocolate log."

Harry rolls his eyes at me and goes back to taking weird photos of himself and the room around us. I sit down next to him; stretching my legs out in front and leaning back on my elbows casually.

"Harry?" he nods and takes a piece of pizza off of the plate. "When are we going to talk about what happened?"

"What are you on about?"

"Earlier on. You know, when you kissed me."

"What about it?" He looks up with an evil glint. "Do you want another one?" I do. I really do, but I squint my eyes to stop myself from getting distracted.

"There was reason for it. What was it?"

He picks at the woolen threads in his jumper and I smack his hand to stop him from making a hole. Harry looks up at me with amused eyes. "I kissed you because I liked you. I must admit half of it was to just shut you up but..." His voice trails off.

"You did it because you like me." I receive a small nod. "But?"

"There are no buts Rach."

"Come on... You kissed me..."

He finally cracks. "But I can't be with you."

For some reason it doesn't come as a surprise. "Because..." I prompt.

"Because Modest still have me in this stupid publicity contract."

"One direction heart throb strikes again huh?" I don't try to hide the amused smile on my lips.

"Okay. Sorry." Maybe that was a little too soon.

Harry rolls onto his stomach and takes a mini burger from the plate this time. I've been picking at the chips since sitting down but I'm no longer hungry.

"Harry, why's the contract a problem?"

"What do you mean?"

"Well, can you not just tell them you won't do it. Technically they're not managing you anymore."

"Oh they're definitely managing us. Until February when their contract ends that is."

"So many contracts..." I yawn. "How do you keep up with them?"

"I don't. I just get told what to do."

"Fair enough."

"Okay, so the contract will be a problem... Until February?"

"Yeah." He looks so disheartened. I think I would probably do anything to put that smile back on his face. Whatever he wanted to-

I have an idea. "It's a problem to you. What if it's not a problem to me?"

"How can it 'not be a problem'? It's a big problem! I can't be with you whilst that contract's still there because I will have to continue seeing Kendall and..." He catches hold of what I'm saying and his face scrunches in horror. "No. Don't even go there. It's not fair to you. I don't care if you don't care -it will matter to me and it will constantly be on my mind. I just..." He looks into my eyes sadly. "I don't want you to get hurt or feel like you're second best. I tried to hide a relationship before -the girl turned crazy and ended up running for the hills. I can't have that happening to you."

"You can't change my mind."

"Okay." We sit in silence for a while. I never knew it could be so comfortable with him -just lying around, not having to say a word. I start to think about us, the future, this evening... and how could I not imagine that kiss? The kiss that lasted forever and yet it still wasn't long enough... His lips, the kiss-

"I'm leaving for Cheshire tomorrow evening. Come and spend the day with me?" I try to forget what I was thinking before he spoke, but his mouth if very distracting now that I can only think of doing one thing. I cough mildly and try to forget how long I've been staring at him as he waits for an answer.

"If that's what you want?"

"Okay." I find his hand next to mine and squeeze it. "You can give me my presents tomorrow then, by the way."

Harry chuckles. "Deal." Goddamn it. I'm still staring at his lips. "Rach, am I distracting you?"

"Totally." He bursts out laughing, leaning back on his arms to tilt his head back and chuckle. I can't believe I just admitted that. I don't even remember the thought process where I decided that that would be a good thing to say out loud.

He looks into my eyes, raising one eyebrow cockily in a manner that I haven't seen for at least a week. "Good." Aaaand... we're back. I giggle to myself at his dependable arrogance -which is nearly always used as a joke- and take a mince pie off of the plate.

Harry follows suit and we end up talking for the next two hours. Nothing extremely important; just families, Christmas traditions, festive memories. Anything that springs to mind, we tell each other.

I missed this. I totally missed it, and one thing I do know, is that I'll never take Harry for granted again. No matter what we're arguing about, today I found out that giving him a chance turned out to be the best thing I think I've ever done. Because guess what? Harry Styles and I? Were strong and I know that we'll be together soon -whether he likes it or not. Because I need him.

Earlier, when I was crying out for help from 'someone... anyone', that was false. I wasn't crying out for someone or anyone, I was crying out for Harry Styles. I just didn't know it yet.
