143. 'You Need Her Too'

LIAM’S POV:

We’re just getting to know the set, being guided around the house which will host all of the ‘house party’ scenes in Midnight Memories, when Niall comes striding through the front door with a face of thunder and big, dark bags under his eyes.

At last, I sigh, it's not like we've been here for an hour already.

One of the video production managers scolds him for being late, but the glare that he receives stops him in his tracks, mid-sentence. All of us boys are sitting in one of the back rooms where Lou’s set up her stations for each of us, and Caroline has laid out our clothes, when he comes stomping in and falls into the chair, sighing at his reflection in the mirror opposite. Lou catches Harry’s eyes nervously as she gets to work, trying her best to make his skin look brighter and clear his dark circles away.

Louis, being the person that he is, makes the first comment. “Sooo…” He looks around the room inquisitively, keeping his eyes an innocent distance away from Niall’s. “You made it out of Azkaban huh?”

Not expecting his joke, all four of us let out a laugh, even Niall’s mouth twitches up –he can never resist Louis’ dumb jokes- and it instantly puts the rest of us at ease.

“You didn’t answer any of our calls…” Zayn starts, looking down at his hands. He looks offended and let-down by Niall’s drastic actions.

“Yeah. I just needed some time.” Zayn pats his shoulder lightly, already forgiving his best friend, like the understanding person he is.

“Three days hardly counts as ‘some time’, Nialler.” Harry reasons with his hands raised, before Niall can attack him.

“Yeah, well when we asked you how long it was going to take you to get with Rach you said ‘some time’. How long was that again Hazza?” I stick up for Niall, making him feel more included in the group and allowing everyone to relax a little bit more. Harry’s cheeks turn red and it rewards me with a thankful smile from the exhausted blonde, but that’s not why I did it. See with situations like these, you have to work out the best way to get around it or get through it.

“So what’s the set like?” Niall asks timidly, hoping that us boys will take him back under our wings. And what can you expect? Of course we do.

“It’s good.” Harry smiles “Niall you’ve got a scene with two girls where they have to act uninterested in you –that should be fun for you to do.”

“Yeah, they probably won’t have to act that much. Not having too good luck with girls these days if you guys haven’t noticed.”

“Niall, what’s that supposed to mean?” Louis says, turning serious as we all ignore Niall’s quiet and sorrowful chuckles. Not a single one of us is smiling except for him. He notices and looks up at the ceiling, sucking the right side of his teeth and taking a deep breath.

“I don’t know man…”

“Rosie?”

“I’d rather not talk about it.”

“Well you’re gonna have to at some point bro.” Zayn points out, "And we’re all willing to talk right now, so come on. What happened?”

His blue eyes turn stormy, but not in the same way that they were dark when he angrily entered the studio about 10 minutes ago. “Okay.”

“Just let it all out.” Harry assures him, crossing his legs and biting down on one of his fingernails.

“Okay, I will. So I’m at the bar, getting drinks, and I’ve been hearing these rumours for days that Rosie’s not interested anymore –she’s had her ten minutes of fame and now she wants out.”

“You haven’t been reading the papers again Niall?” Zayn sighes into a palm. “Come on, out of all of us you’re the only one out of all of us who's always saying they’re bullshit and based on no evidence whatsoever.”

“Yeah,” Niall starts, backing up his own argument. “Well things change when you turn around and the next thing you know your girl is snogging some other guy, only 10 feet away from you.”

This whole thing has been blown up so out of proportion by now, I don’t even know how to intervene and work it out anymore.

“So then what happened?” Harry prompts.

“What do you think? I got my fucking arse out of there. Found a taxi with no one inside and went straight back to the flats.”

“And where was Rosie?”

“Running after me.”

“Hang on... Let me get this right. You're completely in love with this girl, she’s running after you, and you don’t stop to think or even give her a chance to explain?” Louis holds his hands up in aggravation, asking for a clear explanation from Niall.

“I wasn’t thinking straight.” Well that’s clear to all of us.

“Do you know the guy?” Louis asks.

“Are you serious? Course I don’t. If I did, do you really think I’d be here right now when I could be knocking some sense into him instead?”

“Niall…” Zayn warns.

“Okay,” Louis says. “You said it yourself. You don’t know this guy. So how the fuck would you know that he’s not some creepy pervert who’s just moved onto Rosie without her permission. That ever cross your mind buddy?”

“It didn’t look like that to me.” Niall scoffs.

I finally lose it. It’s the image of a vulnerable Rosie that pushes forward into my mind, ordering me; saying that I need to tell him the truth. “Well maybe you should have looked closer.” I look up, into my best friends eyes and they’re washed in confusion at my sudden outburst.

“What? What are you trying to say Li?”

“What I’m trying to say is that not everything comes down to how it looks and not everything is how it seems. That guy might not have been a creepy pervert, but I bet you didn’t realise that he was actually a twisted 16 year old kid who goes to Rosie’s school and is looking for a bit of extra popularity. Didn’t give her the time to explain that, did you? Not even after she got hit by a car running over the road to reach you.” I roll my eyes in exasperation, wishing that he had just been rational from the start. If he had let Rosie explain there and then, then none of this would be happening right now.

“What? How do you know about that?” Some sort of emotion between sickness and guilt creeps onto his face.

“Because we went to see her earlier.”

There’s a few seconds of silence. I feel Harry, Louis and Zayn meet each other’s eyes around the room, communicating without the use of words.

It takes a while for Niall to find his voice, and when he does, it feels like deja vu all over again. “Is she okay?” They don’t even realise how similar they are –both thinking about the other person rather than themselves.

“You know what? I don’t actually know. And I’m worried sick about her because in the space of 24 hours she got hit by a car, kissed by some creep and abandoned on an empty road. She’s been refusing to eat for the past three days and, during all of that time, she also stopped talking too. You know what’s even worse? We went round earlier on and she was completely devastated, weak and fragile. She looked empty Niall. Empty."

His mouth is hanging open, and though I hate to hurt him like this, I know I just need to let it all out. I need to give him the one explanation that's going to make him feel like such a twat for leaving her there in the middle of Croydon. "And still, after all the things that have happened to her -god damn it- the first thing that she said to anyone, since Friday, was exactly the same thing that you just asked me. She said to me ‘is he okay?’ Apart from your name. She said your name first, if that makes you feel any better.”

I get up roughly and leave the room, to go and ask when we can start filming, frustrated with Niall’s clouded vision. “Maybe hearing the truth will make you think.” I mumble over my shoulder before accidentally bumping into Lou and pacing out of the room’s hearing range.

We’re on a tea break when I bump into Niall, seeing him for the first time since I shouted at him like a kid and gave him all of the hard-hitting information on his abandoned girlfriend. I really can’t stay angry at him -and he looks helplessly upset- so I take long strides towards him and lean backwards on the kitchen counter top with one hand in my jeans’ pocket. “Hey.”

“Hey.” He mumbles back, taking a sip of tea and munching on a few biscuits with a low level of enthusiasm. Wow, things must be bad for him to act like that around food. “Look… what you said earlier-"

“I’m sorry.” I surprise him. “I was angry –I shouldn’t have loaded all of that information onto you like that. I could have done it in a better way.”

“No, I’m glad.” Niall smirks to himself. “It gave me a kick up the arse.”

“Listen... I might not be your favourite person right now, but I do honestly care about both of you –which is why I’m so emotionally invested in this. I want to see both of you happy –that’s my only outcome here.” It’s hard to not get emotional when talking about the topic of something you’re passionate about –and especially when it involves two of your best friends, who are also one of your favourite couples.

“I know Li.” Niall rocks towards me and bumps shoulders with mine, but then he falls back into his previous place and goes quiet. “Is it all true? What you said?”

“Yes. She’s convinced it’s her fault –I think she sees it as a punishment for herself. Especially the eating thing.”

“It’s dangerous.” Niall speaks aloud. “Do you know them girls that cut? When they see pictures it can trigger?” I nod slowly –I hate the idea of self-harm, but so many of our fans go through it. It makes me sad to think about it. “Well I was reading up on anorexia before and… apparently skipping meals can be a trigger. So… If Rosie’s been…”

“Three days’ worth of meals.” I confirm, speaking my thoughts and finishing what he would have said eventually.

“Is she eating now?” I recognise the same sense of urgency that Rosie had in her voice earlier.

“I don’t know. Rachel was going to get her to eat when we left, but I don’t know what happened.”

“What’ve I done Liam?” Niall whispers, cradling his face in his hands as he shakes his head. “I fucked up so bad; she’s the best thing that’s ever happened to me.”

“You overreacted. It’s fine now, as long as you can man up enough to take responsibility for it.” I look into my bandmates’ eyes. “She needs you Niall, and no offense, but barricading your flat entrance doesn’t exactly prove that you were doing well without her...”

“I miss her.” He murmurs.

“Tell her.” He doesn’t reply, only looks at the floor and gives his head another disappointed shake. If I had to guess, I’d say that he is feeling guilty and embarrassed. “You guys haven’t ever argued right?”

He racks his brain. “No. Not that I can remember.”

“Well this is it then. This is your first chance to work out whether it’s worth fighting for. It’s your chance to prove how you act and can take responsibility for your actions. Rosie doesn’t know anything about that side of you yet, so you need to go out there and show her that you’re the real man you know you are.”

“I’m not a real man. Not when I-“

“Bullshit.” I chuckle. “Have some confidence bro.” He bites his lip in doubt. “Niall listen to me. The good times are worth nothing if you can’t make it through the bad. That’s what they say isn’t it? Our true personalities emerge when faced with a problem. Don’t be the frightened guy you were on Friday, who ran away and jumped into a taxi. Face the problem head-on. Show your bravery –you know, the real you Nialler.”

“Okay.” I think I’m finally starting to sink the message into his head. Jesus... I should get paid for stuff like this.

“She needs you Niall. And I know that you need her too. Just be the person that you want to be –you never know,” I grin “You could end up liking him even better.”
