103. The Talk

“What’s going on?” I’m pulling Niall in from the doorstep, tiptoeing to cover his eyes from behind. It’s a struggle, and he tries to move them on four different occasions, but I keep my fingers tightly plastered over his eyes. Lola giggles and goes to shut the door behind me.

"Just a small surprise."

For the past hour she’s been helping me to make a huge cake for when Niall got here. We’re having dinner with my family, and Carla again, but I thought it’d be nice to surprise him with one of his favourite things in the whole world after music; food.

I approach the set up table, that the three tier chocolate cake on which has copious amounts of red frosting covering the surface. Lola runs back in; she said she wanted to see his reaction too. Mum is standing in the doorway and Carla, Dad and Justin are all scattered around the kitchen table.

They all greet him in laughter and he laughs back. “Hi. Sorry, I didn’t get to say a proper hello before Rosie attacked me." He’s got his hand out in front of him, like he’s scared I might push him over at any second, and he nearly swipes at my Dad’s shoulder.

“Hey, careful there blondie.”

“Sorry David!" he tilts his head back to laugh loudly, using it as an opportunity to escape from my grasp again. I somehow manage to seize the power to keep my hands glued there with a smirk. "Can you let go of my eyes now, love?”

“Sure.” I take my hands away and step around him to see his face.

At first he’s disorientated but then he looks straight ahead and spots the cake. “Wow… That’s certainly something…” I can tell by his face that he’s trying very hard not to dive into it straight away.

“You like it?”

“How couldn’t I? It’s cake… it’s food… it’s chocolate… and it’s certainly a surprise.” He reads the words on top in interest; ‘ONE MONTH!’ it states.

Justin laughs from the other side of the table.

“So he got you Roses and you made him a cake…”

“You made this? Wow, I like it even better now!”

Justin continues sarcastically as if we hadn't even interrupted him… “To be honest, I’m not too sure who has benefitted the most… Cake or flowers?” He imaginatively weighs them up on either hand, like a set of scales, deciding that receiving a cake would win for him, and Carla squeezes his arm.

“You never did anything like that for me, on our first month of knowing each other!” She pouts in sarcastic humour.

“Well that would be because I was 8 years old and we hardly knew each other.” Although they’ve been going out for 2 years now, Justin originally met Carla when she transferred to his primary school, just after her dad died.

“Can I take a picture? The boys are going to be sooo jealous that they couldn’t make it here tonight.” I originally invited all of them for dinner, but somehow Niall was the only one without any plans.

“Sure, sure.” He gets his phone out and takes some photos, snapping a few of me too, before I can protest. “Hey, at least give me some warning!” There’s a cheeky grin on his face when Lola butts into our conversation.

“I helped make it too, didn't I Rosie?” I nod along with her and Niall goes to give her a hug, bending down to make the height difference just a tiny bit less noticeable.

“Well that means you get some photos too then.” He puts his phone in her face before she can duck or hide. “Thanks for the cake; I can’t wait to try some.”

“I’m glad you like it, they've spent ages messing up my kitchen and hovering around the work services to get it done between school and you arriving here.” I blush slightly but its true; there was flour everywhere in our hurry to get it made, baked and frosted in the four hours after getting home.

“Can we try some now?” I’m asking my mum because it’s clear by the look on Niall’s face that he’s trying his hardest not to ask.

“I suppose someone has to test it out.” Mum giggles as Niall’s face lights up and we both make a mad dash to the cutlery drawer and plates cupboard, where we both compete to get plates and a knife the fastest. Niall gets the knife out before I can, which I don’t think is a good idea and he swings it around lightheartedly.

“Oh my god. Hold it properly you dumb ass.” Its one of the sharpest knives we own. He pretends to drop it, making me squeal, but then holds it tightly in his hands as he lets out an extremely loud laugh, only just getting the words ‘Look at her face. Look at that face!’ out of his mouth repeatedly.

“That’s right kids. Health and safety first.” He directs his statement at Carla and Lola who can’t help creasing in laughter; I just roll my eyes with my amused brother and parents.

We dish out the medium sized pieces of cake together and everyone waits for Niall to take the first bite as it's his present. He takes a huge mouthful and then stares at me in horror. Oh my god. I haven't tried it yet... What if its terrible? He looks like he's going to spit it out... What if I didn't follow the recipe properly?

"Um... How is it?" My voice shakes as I mumble through fingers at my mouth.

"Disgusting..." He manages to get the word out through a mouthful of mashed up, dark brown cake. His blue eyes are open wide. I can imagine the headlines now 'Girlfriend Poisions Niall Horan'. My face must be a picture because he starts shaking his head in silent laughter, taking another bite from the cake. "You should have seen your face. Relax –it’s really good."

"I'm extremely comforted by how amusing you find my face."

"Your face is always amusing love." If we were alone right now I would probably lean in to kiss him. Luckily I don't, because not only are there eyes watching us, but his face is also stuffed with my baking creation.

"You had us all going there Niall." My dad claps him on the back and pulls a seat out so that he can sit next to him. The whole room lets out various amount of held breaths and I hide behind a hand, embarrassed that I fell for such a blatantly obvious prank. The cake is actually really good -even if I do say so myself.

I'm glad that my parents are really cool with Niall and Carla -especially my dad. He can get overprotective at times, but at least he hasn't threatened Niall with a gun yet -which I hear is a thing between most father and daughters-boyfriend relationships.

Later that evening, I'm alone with my mum in the downstairs kitchen. She's washing the dishes and I'm sitting on the countertop pretending to help.

"Niall's staying the night?"

"Yeah, he's just showering."

She suddenly looks into my eyes, her auburn hair bounces around her sharp chin. "You know you'll always be my baby girl, but I'm so so proud of how much you've matured in this last month. I've seen a change in you -something that only Niall can provoke from you when he's around."

She's right, Niall's had such an impact on my life. I already know that, but it's nice to hear it voiced by someone other than myself.

I make a snarky comment which she just shakes her head at with a smile. "If I knew maturing meant skipping class then I'd have done it much sooner."

"You know Rosie, I never thought you having a boyfriend would be this big a deal -that it would change you so much. I used to be terrified that you would come home from school one day to tell me that some older guy had gotten you knocked up -that's every mothers fear. But then I realised when you started talking about that one boy upstairs," She looks up at the ceiling with a tilt of her head. "Well... I just knew that there was something special about it and that all those times I spent worrying were for nothing because it doesn't matter how 'lucky' you think you are. You're so special and I always knew that something, or someone, as equally special was coming your way."

She's starting to tear me up -I don't want to cry. "Thanks mum. It's nice... to hear that." I can't think of anything else to say, but she obviously has something planned because her next words flow clearly and with an urgency to them.

"Which brings me on to my next point. I love you... a lot... And I love Niall too. But if that boy ever gets you pregnant before you've even thought about having kids then he's going to have to pay a price because I just want you to be happy and I know the pressures that come to young people with small children." Mum was 27 when she had Justin, but she had previously gotten pregnant with Dad when she was 22 -only to have a miscarriage. "So I don't need to know what you and Niall are up to up there -that's not something a mother wants to know- but I hope you're being safe and-" is she seriously trying to have 'the talk' with me?

"WOAHH, woah, woah. Hold up. Stop talking so quickly... Woah..."

"I just want to know if you're using protection. I want you to be safe."

"Mum..." I don't know what else to say. "Mum there's no need."

"I know you find it embarrassing but it's important and if you ever need to go to a clinic for birth control or the pill or whatever then you just need to tell me."

My brain is going into overload. "Mum stop!"

"Aww, are you embarrassed? It's nothing to be embarrassed about. Sex is a very intimate and delightful thing-" this cannot be happening.

"Mum I'm a virgin!" Maybe that was a little louder than I intended. I hope that everyone's asleep and Niall's shower water is too loud for him to have heard. Oh my god... I just admitted to my mum that I'm still a virgin...

"Aww, Rosie. You're still my baby."

She wraps me in a very awkward cuddle, holding me for longer than necessary.

"I'm sorry, I'm sorry. You've made the right choice -you should be prepared and ready for it when it does happen." I'm almost speechless.

"What's wrong with you?" Does she not have any embarrassment left in her body?

"Nothing. This is something that mothers need to talk about with their daughters. One day it will be Lola's turn." God help the girl.

"You do know people teach us these kind of things before we even get to high school..."

"I know Rosie." She carries on doing the dishes and then looks up at me with a chuckle. "Anyway, I'm glad you've waited... To be honest, I think I like Niall a lot more now..." I'm just glad she didn't talk to both of us about this -my face would have been at least four shades redder than it is now if Niall was sat in the same room as me when she said all of this.

"Great. I'll let him know that." I can't help but roll my eyes at her.

"Make sure you only do it when you're ready!"

Okay, I don't need to hear this anymore. I hop off the counter and nearly jog out of the kitchen. "Okay, night mum."

"I love you." She laughs with a smirk.

"Somehow I still love you too..." I don't get how my crazy mum doesn't get the least bit embarrassed by this kind of stuff -I can't even see Niall topless without blushing -which happens a lot due to the whole band's fondness of nudity, which is usually instigated by Harry.
