19. Panic Attack

NIALL'S POV:

"So now that we have nothing else planned, what would you girls like to do?" Liam asked them politely.

Rosie and Rachel looked at each other before shrugging and Rosie said "We don't mind!"

Rachel gave us an idea "We could just walk around for a while and look in any shops that take our fancy."

"Yeah sure! That wouldn't be a problem."

An hour later and we were just coming out of Nike, and between me and Liam, we had three bags of shopping for us and one bag of collective items for the girls.

We wanted to spend money on them but they were embarrassed by it and insisted on us not paying for anything of theirs. Unfortunately for them; me and Liam were not going to go without a fight before they finally allowed is to pay for their things, including a Nike hoodie each and some other little bits. We had just decided to go into H&M when Li picked up his phone.

"Hey mate!" He started off cheerful before he concentrated on what the other person was saying and started to ruffle his hair with his hand, as his eyebrows knitted together "Mhmm... I'm listening... Okay but-... Is there any way... No? Okay... 15 minutes? Okay... Ill tell them. Do not be late. Alright bye."

"What's up Li?" I spotted the panic on his face.

"Where are the girls?"

"Over there..." I pointed and he started to go over "I was keeping my eyes on them. What's going on Liam?"

He looked back at me before he mouthed a single word. 'Paps'. Shit, this couldn't be good. We were in the middle of a shopping centre and without any security.

"I think I'm going to get this one..." Rosie said to her friend, pointing at a light pink dress that she stood next to.

"Sorry girls but we're going to have to cut our shopping trip short. There are paparazzi outside the shop and the shop security guards are holding them off, but we're going to have to leave." Rachel looked calm but disappointed. Rosie on the other hand looked terrified. "The bad news is that Rosie's already been spotted but luckily you haven't Rachel. If you leave now, you will go unnoticed and you can wait where you two were dropped off, until either Thom, I or Niall get there."

"Okay," she said confidently "I'll go now, see you in a few minutes guys." She stepped towards the front of the shop until she broke out into a steady pace.

"What about me?" Rosie whispered.

"Now that you've been spotted with us you won't be able to walk out unnoticed, so the best thing we can do is cover you up, to secure your identity and you can walk out with one of us."

"I'm taking her." I said straight away. I wanted to be there to protect her. After all, it was my fault that she was in this situation in the first place. I looked at her and for the first time today, she looked back at me blankly with fear in her eyes. My poor Rosie.

"Okay..." She said in a small voice.

"Niall will take care of you, I'm going to walk around for a bit before I leave - to give Rachel some time before they speculate that she was with us." He gave Rosie a small hug before he patted me on the back. "Take care of her. Don't worry about this Rosie, it happens all the time -it just so happens to be your first time which is why we want to take care of you." She nodded before he smiled at her and walked off.

"Rosie, listen to me... We're going to get a member of staff to get us some things that will help me to help me to cover you up, okay?"

"Yeah." She followed numbly along behind me, until we found an older women who worked here. I explained our situation and, since she recognized me, she seemed very sympathetic -especially towards the stricken girl next to me.

The woman helped me to find an over-sized, thick grey beanie, to fit over and hide all of Rosie's curls, as well as a huge pair of dark lens sunglasses. She also helped me to get Rosie into her Nike jumper that we had bought previously and do the hood up tightly around her face before I gave her a £20 note. "Thank you for helping. Take this and use it to pay for the items. Whatever's left is yours." She said thank you before I grabbed Rosie's hand and told her what was going to happen. There will be lots of flashes and maybe some shouts but you are to ignore everything and listen to my voice only, okay?" She nodded. "Keep your head down and don't let go of my arm." I threw one arm over her shoulder before I did up my hoodie and held onto one of her hands with my free one. Her grip was extremely tight on my hand, like she was clinging on for dear life, so I rubbed tiny circles on her shoulder to try and calm her down. There was no way she was enjoying any of this right now.

We took a final few steps, before the shop could protect us no longer, and we threw ourselves out into the crowd of cameras and shouting people. It was now dark outside, so the flashes contrasted deeply with the sky. There was only one clear path that I could see and it was back into the shopping centre, so I pushed people off of us and guided Rosie away from the ever-growing crowd. Her shoulders were shaking when we broke into a jog and I took her down a private corridor that was invisible from the people behind us. It was used for the shop staff to get into the back warehouses and offices. We were safe, but Rosie was breathing uncontrollably so I undid her hood and pulled her sunglasses from her face. The terror was there, and so was the panic attack that I could see making its way up to the surface.

"Shhhh... Breathe. It's okay now, you're safe." We were crouching down behind the door and were leaning against the concrete wall. With each deep and panicked breath, I was afraid that she wouldn't be able to control her breathing. It was when I pulled her into a hug and rubbed her back that she finally started to calm down.

"Take your time. We're not going anywhere until you're ready. I'm sorry I got you into this mess. It was all my fault."

She buried her face into my neck, her breathing still not quite natural when she whispered "What are you talking about? Of course it's not your fault. It's your fault that you got me out of there without me collapsing onto the floor, but that's about it." I laughed. Even at a time like this, she still made an effort to show her humorous side.

I looked into her eyes as I slouched down further towards the floor and she slumped onto my lap. I tuck a stray curl under the beanie that she was wearing and thought about how cute she looked. She was sitting on my lap and I could still feel her legs shaking. I went to open my mouth. I needed to ask her; talk to her about something when she suddenly spoke.

“I loved it.” Her voice was small and she threw me off track of what I was about to say.

“Loved what?” She turned to face me before rolling her eyes and smiling.

“Your note? Track 18?”

“Oh... I didn’t think you’d see it.”

“I listened to it this morning.” She was feeling better - I could tell because her voice was more confident - but every part of her body was still making tiny little movements.

“Rosie, are you sure that you’re okay? I’m worried about you.”

“I’m fine. It scared me a bit but I’m calming down now.”

“Okay.” We sat there in silence for a whole minute longer, when I looked around and took in our surroundings and realised that we would have to move sometime soon. A cold, dirty, back alley for staff to get into the back of their shops wasn’t the best place for us to be sitting right now. I took out my phone and saw a message from Li.

‘Hope you’re both okay. Most of the press have gone now but there are still a lot of fans. We’re driving round the outside of the centre until we see you. Try to go down the back alleys and avoid crowded areas. Liam’

Well that wasn’t so hard to do. I looked over Rosie’s head to the fire exit that was down the end of this corridor. We’d go that way.

“Come on Love. Let’s go and get in the car.”

I stood her up before standing next to her. I tried to give her a bit of space to see if that would help but she just stumbled back into me; holding tightly onto the shirt at my back and chest.

“No, don’t let go. I might fall over.” I put my arm around her sympathetically and slid her disguise back on, just in case, as I supported her. We carried on down the corridor and got to the fire exit in no time at all.

It exited onto a thin pavement when I suddenly saw the Limo start to come around the corner towards us. The door flew open at us and Rosie and I got in at the same time and slid in next to the other two before Rachel and Liam gave a sigh of relief. “Thank god you’re okay.”

“We couldn’t see you anywhere!” I just smiled at them as they looked down at Rosie who was still slouched against my chest; her hand shaking against her face and you could see that everybody's initial thoughts were full of concern.

“Are you okay Rosie?” Rach seemed panicked but the mood lightened as someone else spoke.

“She’s braver than I am.” Thom piped up at us from the front. I looked down just in time to see her give him a weak smile.

When you were almost used to all the attention and fame, sometimes it was easy to forget how much it could affect someone who wasn't used to it. Someone who lived a normal life without having to worry about the fans, or the paps. Even having to worry about having a driver or security guard on hand at all times.

It was scary to see Rose go from being such a confident and charming character, to the scared and weak little girl that she hid deep inside of her. But she was okay, and I wouldn’t let that happen to her again. I promised it to myself.
