128. 'Even If I Do This?'

“Are you ready to go?” I lean through my mum’s door with a smile.

“Nearly.” She’s securing a cloudy silver pendant around her neck, one that my dad brought her, and adding more hairspray to keep her hair quiffed at the top of her head.

“Come on mum!” I’ve been bouncing around all morning –Niall’s already noticed a difference, so I don’t know how much longer I’m going to be able to keep the secret for. What if it just accidentally slips out? “We need to go.”

“What’s the rush?”

“We’re meeting Carla at the restaurant and everyone else is waiting downstairs.” Everyone including Niall, Dad and Lola. Justin’s already taken Dad’s car to go and pick up Carla and her mum. After Justin told her our plan she decided that she wanted to come too, so that they can show our mum and dad they are in this together. From now on, Carla and Justin will be one stable unit –supporting each other in everything –although the 30 minute drive between housing arrangements could turn that into a problem.

Carla’s mum is also coming, more for moral support as she already knows about the grandchild who is on the way. I twirl the Land Rover car keys around one finger.

“Ahh…” Mum picks up a grey, three-quarter-length sleeve blazer off of the back of her dressing table chair and shrugs it on. “Come on then little miss giddy.”

“Don’t think I haven’t noticed. You’ve been jumping up and down all morning.” She rolls her eyes at me but I catch her smile before she can turn away and stride down the stairs. I run to my room to grab the grey, suede, strap heels that I picked out to go with my navy skinny jeans and oversized white knit jumper that falls off of my shoulders. As soon as I’m downstairs, Niall gets up from the sofa and lightly pushes me out of the door before I can find something else to distract myself with.

“If you keep acting like this, whatever this emergency family outing is about, you will give it away.” He winks at me and I take his advice –forcing the permanent smile off of my lips before the rest of my family gets into the back seats of the car, although I can't help but squint at him. If he can tell that there's something going on, why hasn't he asked yet? Oh well, at least he's giving me tips.

“So…” I smile to my mum and dad, either side of Lola, as I reverse out of the driveway onto the empty road. “What do you think about your daughter driving you for the first time?”

I’m replied to with a raise of the eyebrows from mum, as if to say ‘If you think I’ll enjoy it then you must be kidding’ and dad just shakes his head, like he's aware of the fact that he should know better than to get into a car with his reckless daughter.

“This is the first time she’s driving the two of you?” Niall turns around with a huge grin and I slap his knee lightly. ‘Behave’ I tell him telepathically, but he mustn’t be telepathic, because he takes a mighty hold on the support handle above the door and puts one hand on the dashboard in front of him. “Well good luck! Let’s all be thankful you’ve got a great team of lawyers, huh?”

I watch my parents panic stricken faces –and Lola’s admiringly amused expression- and as a result, I can’t stop laughing the whole way to the restaurant whilst Niall tries to make awkward banter with my extremely, silently worried parents…

“Well! We made it!” Niall mockingly wipes the sweat off his brows whilst I turn around in my seat. My family, all but Lola, seem to be scrambling out of their seats as fast as possible –as if scared I might turn the engine on again.

“Hey, you didn’t seriously believe him did you?”

“Believe what? We nearly crashed!”

“That was only once, and the idiot shouldn’t have pulled out at the roundabout!”

"I wouldn't want to be supporting that case in court -not when people to your right have right of way."

"Okay, okay. I'll practice more and get better. Sorry I'm such a crap driver."

"Somehow I don't think 'practice' will help when you're in a body bag at a morgue."

"Geeeh, thanks dad."

Niall claps my dad on the shoulder whilst he chokes on laughter. Lola's the only one to latch onto my elbow, as we walk towards the small pub/restaurant that has a beautiful beer garden in the summer, and compliment me on my driving. "Don’t listen to them I think it’s really cool that you can drive now!”

“Aww, thanks beautiful. Not long until you can too.”

“Rosie, it’s like 5 years.” 5 years, I think to myself, so much will have happened in 5 years time...

"Hi, I think we have a table under the name…” Mum looks back at me for help, just to check, as Justin and I made the reservation this morning.

“Stephens.” I finish for her.

“How many was it for?”

“Eight.” I reply again.

“Okay, it’s just over here. Your other 3 guests arrived about 5 minutes ago.”

The middle aged waitress starts to lead us forward, and I’m about to follow, when I feel Niall pull me back by my wrist.

"What?" I laugh, pressed against him, just inside the doorway of the restaurant. Another family move past us, pretending not to watch, but Niall still waits for them to go before giving me an explanation.

"There's something you're not telling me." He squints at me through thick brown lashes.

"I don't know what you're talking about." My tone is teasing. I'm not really helping to prove my point am I? Goddamn it Rosie, poker face, where is your poker face when you need it? You can't tell him yet.

"Rosie," he laughs dryly and moves a thin strand of hair that's fallen onto my cheek. "I know when you're lying. You've been acting hysterical all morning."

"Maybe I'm just in a good mood?"

"Well there has to be a reason then."

"Hmm..." My self-strain is wavering... "Yes, there's a reason..." That can't do any harm right? He already knows there's something going on.

"No." I refuse to tell him anymore...

"Even if I do this?"

He leans forward and brushes his lips against mine, a sly smirk crossing them when he notices my heart beat quicken at his touch.

"Even if you do that." I pull away with a smile. "But feel free to do it again."

He laughs at me in exasperation. "You're a right tease you are. Come on then." He takes my hand and starts to pull me along with him. I place my other hand on his shoulder to lean closer and whisper something into his ear.

"Would you trust me if I told you that you'll be finding out sooner than you think?"

"No." He tries to keep looking forward, an expressionless smirk set on his mouth as we walk slowly.

"Even if I do this?" I mock, lifting our hands to place a kiss on the back of his.

"Even if you do that." He repeats and lets out a louder laugh.
