129. 'Can Carla Come and Live With Us?'

 ROSIE'S POV:

"It isn't often us parents are treated to dinner by our children!" Mum smiles through her terrible headache of last night and raises her glass to Melanie -Carla's mum. She's a lovely woman with cropped short, bright red hair. She's very in touch with Our generation and has a very youthful style compared for her age, making her seem a lot more fun than my lovely but plain-Jane mother.

"I say we take advantage of it." Melanie laughs and raises her glass also. From where I'm sitting I can see that Carla is clutching her mum's hand under the wide circular table, although it is invisible to everybody else except Justin and Niall, who sit on either side of Carla, Melanie and I.

"You okay?" I smile quietly and she pats my knee softly in assurance.

I had to put a lot of effort into greeting her normally today; acting my usual self with just a hug rather than squealing about the news and her quite newly and obviously bulging stomach.

Instead I just had to give her a casual hug, whilst using her curtain of long blonde hair to whisper "I know." into her ear.

We all continue to finish our dinners when Dad speaks up, pushing Justin and Carla to speed up the announcement that they were planning to make at the end of the meal.

"So, we're being treated to a meal by our son and daughter, being pulled out for the day -even after a huge party last night- and we have the whole family here around us. Is there a reason for all of this?"

I look over at Justin with a worried glance. He looks as equally alarmed.

"Come on dad, you're not complaining are you?" They both guffaw together, although my brother's laugh is far more nervous.

"No, no, of course not. It's great, lovely in fact." He nudges my mum with her elbow and she agrees.

"So no big surprises? No apologies to make? Nothing you're going to throw on us after a lovely meal and hope we don't get mad at you for?"

I swallow hard. It's almost like he's urging Justin for the news.

"Nope, nothing like that."

I try to back him up. "Of course not. We just wanted to have a good meal and what's a better excuse than to have it right before Niall leaves to go back home for Christmas. Right Justin?"

Mum raises an eyebrow as if she's almost impressed with me.

"Right..." He looks down at the table.  "Actually..." He contemplates and then suddenly stands up, nearly knocking the chair over behind him. Niall chuckles from next to me and I squeeze his knee lightly. "Actually there was something that I had to say." My brother looks around the table with responsibility heavy on his shoulders. I nudge Niall softly and he smirks at me, knowing that he's about to find out something big, just like I told him he would.

"We have something to say..." Justin reiterates, eyeing Carla with a nod. "But... You look like you're about to pass out so I guess I'll just keep this quick." Carla lightly giggles from beside me, appreciation clear in her voice and the transparent hand clutching at her mother's red one. I watch Lola tear her eyes away from Justin to look at me with questioning eyes. I just nod and take Niall's hand excitedly. He smiles back and tickles my palm lightly with his fingertips.

"Justin...?" My mum encourages him.

"Me and Carla are having a baby."

I let my breath out heavily. At least it didn't come down to me or Melanie having to tell them.

"That's great mate. Congratulations!" Trust Niall to be the first one to break the silence with a congratulations -I squeeze his hand thankfully.

"Does that mean I'm going to be an auntie?"

It's embarrassing how quickly Lola's caught on to that -it took me at least 5 minutes.

"Yeah. You'll have a niece or a nephew!" She beams back at her older brother -our older brother.

"Mrs Stephens? Mr Stephens?" Carla speaks up from beside me, anxiety present in her voice. My parents haven't spoken yet.

"Yes dear?"

"Do you have anything to say?"

"Well it's not really a shock -I have to admit." Dad nods sombrely in acknowledgement of what Mum's just said. "You children forget that we were all in the same position as you once before. I was pregnant at your age -I know the signs now, even if we didn't before..."

"Signs?" Justin asks.

"Well there was the fainting, the not feeling well, the bump's already starting to show, and no offence dear, but you practically cleared the lasagne dish with Niall here last week."

"Don't worry Carla," he laughs from beside me in his usual comforting way. "I didn't realise... I just thought I finally had some good competition for once."

We all chuckle and it lightens the mood.

"Dad?" I ask.

"You know what?" We all watch him in interest -waiting for his reaction. "Me and your mum went through this when we were the same age -but ours was slightly different." Yeah, mum never actually got to deliver the baby... "Not only were there complications, but we had just moved into a new city together -away from all of our families and support systems. That's something the two of you don't need to worry about."

"You have both of your families with you and we'll be here for every step of the way. You don't need to worry about money, or support -even looking after the baby. Maybe we didn't get a shot at our opportunity when we were your age, but this is your time to make it work... I'm happy for you." He concludes.

Carla looks like she's about to start crying from beside me. "Aw dad! Don't! Woman with hormones over here -you can't do that to her."

"Sorry sweetheart." We all laugh hysterically through watery eyes and I'm suddenly confused as to why we ever thought mum and dad would be a problem with convincing. They love us completely -and that means every decision and mistake we make will be followed through with a home full of love and support.

"David's right," Melanie speaks to the soon-to-be-parents on either side of her. "And I too will be here for the both of you. We will make a go of this -keep this baby the most loved and protected child there has ever been."

"Mum, stop." Carla half-laughs, in embarrassment that she's about to start bawling her eyes out.

"So, what kind of things need to be sorted out before it arrives?"

"Well there's the living arrangements to be thought about..." My mum starts.

"We could move in together?"

"Somewhere new?" Dad offers. "We could find you a nice flat -I know a few people who are renting out."

"I think we should live together..."

"So do I." Melanie adds.

"But I don't want to be somewhere new and... I don't know, by ourselves...? Living by ourselves will be a new thing anyway. Can you imagine how hard it will be with a baby on top of that?" Justin nods his head slowly in agreement with Carla.

"I think you've got a good point." Niall mutters to the table.

"Can Carla come and live with us?" Lola shouts in excitement but is greeted by a series of serious expressions.

"It's not that simple monkey..." I try to explain.

"It's an option..." Mum admits "But you have to be sure that that's what you and your mother want."

They tighten their grip on each others hands. "You don't have to live with Justin..." Carla nods at the alternative I give her, but then turns to her mother.

"Mum... I just don't want you to be by yourself. Not with dad-"

"Don't say it." Melanie smiles. "But I always knew you'd leave home eventually -you can't wait around for me your whole life, worrying that I'll feel lonely. And besides. Once you've had the baby do you really think you'll be able to get rid of me?"

"No." Carla laughs sweetly.

"Do what you want sweetheart. It's not just you who you need to think about now though..."

Carla deeply thinks for a few seconds before curiosity gets the better of me. "So?"

"So I guess I'm moving in."

"And you can always change your mind."

"Thanks David but... I think we're in this together now. There's no going back."

"Awwww!" No longer able to control myself, I throw my arms around my brother's beautiful girlfriend. "I can't wait. Anything you want, or need, just tell me. We'll all make sure that you're as comfortable as possible. Won't we Jus?"

"Yes ma'am." He laughs.

"And I'm sure I'll be able to fix up one of the spare rooms into a nursery, fit for the little one." Mum's eyes twinkle at the idea; I can only imagine what she's got in mind.

"That would be lovely. Wouldn't it Carlie?" She nods along with her mum.

"So in three months, we'll have our own baby."

"We sure will." Justin smiles and everyone raises their glasses. I catch Niall's eyes and neither of us look away for a few blissful seconds.

"To the future." He toasts.

"To the baby." Mum chimes.

"And to new beginnings." Melanie nods.
