4. Hana

I recognized those eyes.. We used to take the same course back in our school years. Her hair was a lot shorter and lighter before but she hasn't changed a bit. I should be missing her since we've gone through a lot together in the past. She knew my life better than anyone. She knew how my mom died and how tough my life was after her death. She knew how much pressure I've been experiencing ever since I was sent to designing class to relive my mom's wilting career. Her name was.. Hana. We were best of friends, we were like sisters, we couldn't stay apart.. both of us shared the same dream. However, one day.. everything began to fall apart. Aside from our dreams, we also had the same interest. Both of us fell in love with the same guy.

-FLASHBACK-

I vaguely remember that day. We were sitting on a bench, under a large persimmon tree discussing about our upcoming final examination.

"I'm kinda nervous about this," I held the exam schedule in my hand. "We'll do our best, like we always do," her flawless hair blown by the wind. Leaves scattered on the ground and I could hear the wind whispering.. From a distance, we saw children playing by the playground. Then, a figure caught my attention - there he was. She saw him too. Both of us stared, we were mesmerized by his perfection. His cool figure, the fresh smile upon his face.. and the most adorable part was, he's playing with those children. Who doesn't think boys with kids weren't adorable? He was our senior, both of us admired and respected him. His slim face and dashing dark brown hair, not to mention his smoky eyes.. too bad those attractive eyes were hidden behind glasses. His name was Cale but we prefer calling him 'sun bear' because we personally think bears are cute and every time he's around, the sun seemed to have shone brighter than usual. I know the nickname doesn't makes sense but both of us loved it. He would stay and chat with us most of the times when he wasn't busy with club meetings; he even remembered our names. The closer we were, the more attracted I was to him.

"Hey.." I edged closer to Hana. "Yeah?" she shifted her gaze back to me. "Once the exams are over.. and the results are out, I'm going to do it," I said with my voice filled with enthusiasm. "Do.. what?"

"I'm going to confess my love to him."

"Then, you'll need to work twice as hard as you usually do," she answered. "You'll be here to support me, right?" my eyes beaming with anticipation. "As long as you have my back," she nudged. Then, both of us laughed.

3 weeks later..

"Hello? Hey, I'm here at the park. My results are out.. if you get this message, please call me." I closed the phone and held it close to my chest. She'll be so surprised once I told her I've passed the exams with flying colors. I've gain courage and confidence and was ready to confront him. "I can do it Hana! I'll tell him I love him," I was shouting inside my head. I was jumping with joy, the smile on my face won't go away. This was the best day ever! I'll show him how great I am, I'll show him my true colors; the things I'm capable of doing. I'm going to be a fashion designer! (squeal*) Where's Hana? I wanted to share this happiness with her. I decided to call her again.. Beep beep*

"Hana? Where are you? There's something I'd like to tell you about.. I swear, you'd be so proud of me once you hear what I have to say."

I waited for a couple of hours, it was getting late.. and she hasn't showed up. She was never late. As always, whenever she received my messages, she'd come right away. I sent her another voice mail, "Hana.. are you busy? It's getting kinda late.. I'll probably just tell you tomorrow then. So, I'll be heading home now.." I said with disappointment. She haven't even replied my previous messages.

As I walked along the sideways, I watched as the sky turned grey. It was going to rain soon, so I quickly looked for shelter. I stood outside a bistro shop and hugged myself for warmth. Brrr.. it's cold. I leaned against the wall and yawned. I rubbed my eyes sleepily; I haven't been getting much sleep because of the exam. I pushed myself to the limit for six straight nights before the exam and after the exam, I couldn't sleep for another three days thinking about my results. I could barely kept my eyes open.. But, it was all worth it. I reached into my pocket and pulled out a partly scrunched paper. With this, I'll receive happiness; the greatest happiness of all. Hmm, there's a restaurant across the street. I never noticed it before, was it opened recently? It looks fancy, then the food there must be really expensive too. I wouldn't want to waste my money. Nonetheless, the interior design was rather fascinating. Their glass windows were huge, I could see everything inside. What a crowd.. customers kept barging in through those doors and I sympathized the waiters and waitresses. They've been walking around non-stop back and forth serving those impatient customers.

Hey, that girl looks familiar.. I gasped. HANA?! What is she doing there? I've noticed she wasn't alone. A guy was sitting on the table with her.. Then, it hit me. She was on a date with CALE! I was infuriated.. how could she do that to me? She used to say Cale wasn't her type and that she'd never be attracted to him. She even told me that she sees him only as a friend, nothing more than that.. she lied to me! I squinted my eyes, the sight of them being together was an eyesore. Hot tears began rolling down my cheeks.. I dashed into the rain and ran home. I didn't care about anything else anymore. Everything was ruined.. I clutched my result paper and tore it apart. She was my best friend.. and why wasn't she acting like one? I've helped her a thousand times.. but just this ONCE, I've asked for her help in return and she took away that should've been mine.

The next day, Hana told me the truth.. "I'm sorry, Keira. I just couldn't help it, I've had an eye on him for so long. We've been secretly dating, even before the exam.. I was going to tell you but you were so spirited about confessing to him and you were doing so well in the final exams, I wouldn't want to ruin it." Cale placed an arm around Hana's shoulder. "Think of it as a favor. Aren't you happy? You passed the exams.. you'll be a fashion designer soon. You'll be just like your mother."

"But I'm still not happy.." I scowled. "Don't be such a greedy bitch, Keira. You've got what you've always wanted. To be a fashion designer, that was your dream and now, you have it," she replied.

"That was also your dream!"

"True.. but I've changed my mind. I'm going to be a model, Cale said that was a better idea. And, guess what? That dream turned into reality and there was a bonus along," she turned to Cale and gave him a quick kiss on the cheek. "I hope you'd give us your blessing, Keira," Cale eyes were on me. How unnerving.. "Whatever." I walked away.. how dare she called me a 'greedy bitch'? She was the 'greedy bitch'! Who knew she'd turn into that monstrous person..

Since that day, we never met. I heard she became a successful model, her face was imprinted in every magazine, well.. good for her. Another shocking news stabbed me in the heart; "Spice Magazine Model, Hana Devonne married to her former senior, Cale Williams." Lucky her.. she's married. I would have given her a big hug if she hadn't treated me like I was invisible. I'm determined to never ever see her again and I'll strive harder to be as successful as she was, even though mom wouldn't be here to guide me..

Back to reality.. "What is she doing here?" I muttered.

Her hair was longer and a darker brown, her face wasn't as tender as she looked like when we were younger. She had a stoned face expression with her thin lips covered with bright red lipstick. She truly does look like a supermodel..

"Jane, I've to go.." I kept my voice low. I badly wanted to leave this place, I didn't wanted to face her. "Leave? That soon?" she doesn't seem happy. "I'm sorry. I promise I'll see you again. I just realized that.. I needed to do something."

"Are you sure? Or are you just.. avoiding?" she creased her eyebrow. God dammit.. she knows me too well. "Ahahahaha.." I nervously laughed.

"Keira..?" I heard a familiar voice. Oh shit.. My body instantly straightened and I slowly turned around to face her. "Hey...?"

"Oh my God! Keira? Is that you?" she seemed awed. She inspected my face and reached out to shake my hand. "How've you been? You look stunning!"

"I'm fine.. thanks," I mumbled. Jane watched us, she didn't wanted to interrupt a lovely best friend reunion. The problem is.. Hana WAS my best friend. She isn't my best friend anymore. Don't be fooled by her friendliness, she could snap back into a demon anytime she wants. I never knew there was a demon living inside her..

"Oh. Um, Hana, this is Jane," I decided to introduce her. Jane reached out to shake her hand, "You must be one of Keira's friends. She told her one of them became a supermodel and I guess she meant you." Hana smiled, "Yep, I'm the one."

"So, you're married?" Jane surveyed the 1.3 carat pure diamond ring placed on her index finger. "Oh yeah. Me and my husband moved to California a few years back but then decided to move back here again. This place holds so much memories.. we had to come back." Why not just don't move at all?.. Jane seemed touched by her story, "I know, right? Me and my fiance were also thinking about moving out but we did some last minute changes since this place is strongly attached to us.."

Oh boy.. Something tells me that they were going to be gooooood friends and that sickens me. I can't have two best friends betraying me now. "So, is your husband around?" Jane asked. "My husband's a lawyer. Y'know how lawyers are, clients kept coming in and out. He'll only leave his office around 5," she sighed. A lawyer? Cale became a lawyer? Now, that's hilarious. I thought he'd be a scientist.

"So, Keira, you're still not married yet?" she stood facing me and I could sense the mockery in her voice. I rolled my eyes. No, I'm not married - wait a second... Yes, yes, I AM married!

I lifted my hand to her face, showing off the ring Harry gave me. "Apparently, I am.

"To whom?"

For the first time, I proudly announced his name, "Harry Styles.." She furrowed. I knew she was jealous, she thought her husband was better but apparently, mine was greater. My lips twitched into a smile, I kinda like seeing her feeling defeated. "You mean, the famous resort owner?" I nodded. "How is that possible?" her deadly glare stabbed me. "All you needed to do was work hard and be pretty," I pampered my face.

"You're lying," she chuckled. Suddenly, my phone rang. I checked to see who it was.. Harry!! Hah, perfect timing! I showed Hana the upcoming caller bleeping on the screen. After that, I quickly answered it; I probably should make it more convincing. Hey, I'm great at acting.

"Hello? Keira..?"

"Hello darling," I tried to sound flirty. Hana looked at me with her eyes widened.

"Wait, what?" Harry sounded surprised.

"I miss you, honey.." I glanced at her, still in shock I see. She couldn't hear what Harry was saying. So, might as well continue the act.

"Keira, what's gotten into you?"

"What's that?.. You can't wait for tonight? You even decorated the bed with roses. Aww.."

"Keira, have you been drinking? You don't sound like yourself at all!"

Hana couldn't stand hearing our 'romantic' conversation, she grabbed her purse and stomped her way out from the cafe. Jane had a puzzled expression on her face, "What's going on here?

That oughtta show her who's boss.
