War Cry

*unbelievably slow updates* One Direction is put onto a three year break. All of the guys have decided what to do with their lives in the meantime. Liam Payne chose to go into the army. He was glad to meet his best friend, she was nice and funny and someone so easily to get along with. She made his army experience a lot more enjoyable. But what if another band member finds her just as enjoyable as he does? Would he be jealous? Or would he be happy for her?

12. Chapter 11

Chapter 11

She hasn’t woken up in three days. I was so scared for her that I never even left the infirmary except to grab some food and change clothes. I’ve heard people talk about me. They say that I’m “in love” with her. They couldn’t be more wrong, she’s my best friend. I’m just worried.

There were a few times where she’d wake up for a bit and murmur words like “he’s here” or “I’m coming” and it made me so anxious to know what she was talking about. But of course she fell straight to sleep straight after. It was so frustrating because each time she’d wake up for a bit my hope rises and I get so happy that she’s waking up but then I get so disappointed when she doesn’t.

Finally, on the fourth day she started to groan a little and squirm on the cot. I tried to contain myself just in case it was a false alarm but her eyes opened and she blinked a few times before she turned to me.

“Hi,” I murmured. I exhaled a breath I never knew I was holding and smiled at her with relief.

“Hi,” she replied then groaned, “why does my whole body ache?”

“You were out of it for three days,” I replied. Her eyes shot open and she started to sit up in the cot.

“Oh, no. Why didn’t I wake up? Now I have to do paperwork for a while. I can’t believe I missed out on everything...” she continued to talk and ignore me as I tried to get her back to lie down.

“Tanya!” I half yelled. Her talking ceased as she looked at me with shock. “You need to lay back down and rest. You’ll open your stitches if you move like that.”

She frowned in confusion. “What stitches?”

“Don’t you remember?” i asked her and she shook her head. “Our last mission?” Her frowned deepen and I felt my panic rise. “Oh god, you have amnesia. Oh god, this is worse than I thought.”

“Liam, Liam, Liam,” she said reassuringly with a hand on my arm. “I was out of it for three days. If you talk about it, it will jog my memory.”

“Right, okay,” I inhaled then exhaled. “We had evacuate a school that was getting attacked by the Taliban and when we got outside we got ambushed and while we were fighting with them you got shot twice in the collarbone.” I winced at the memory of her blood and me killing that man.

Her hand shot up to her collarbone and she hissed when she hit it too hard. She pulled the strap of her grey singlet aside and assessed the bandaged area. She slowly peeled it off and peaked at the gash. “Gross.”

I snorted. “You’re not the one who had to change the dressing everyday.”

Her face softened as she smiled at me. “You really did that?”

I rolled my eyes. “Don’t tell anyone I did, okay? I don’t want to seem more of a wimp than I already look like.”

“What’s been going on? Was there anything new?” She asked.

I shrugged. “I haven’t left your side the whole time.”

“What? Why?” She asked, surprised.

“Well, I was worried, Tan. You were comatose for three days. I just wanted to make sure you’re okay,” I said, a little shyly.

“That’s sweet of you, Liam,” she smiled softly and I grinned in return.

“What are friends for?” I replied rhetorically.

“Well, I wouldn’t say that was a “friendly” act. I mean, come on, Liam. Just admit that you’re in love with me,” she grinned.

“You haven’t been awake for longer than ten minutes and you’re already talking about how I’m supposedly in love with you,” I commented in an annoyed tone but I couldn’t hide the grin on my face.

“So are the kids okay?” She asked.

“Yeah, Jessica brought them to the back where most of the parents and teachers were waiting,” I answered.

“What did you do, Liam?” She asked. Her eyes were carefully assessing my face and I knew that she could see something in my eyes. She could always see something in my eyes.

I sighed. “I killed the man that shot you.”

Her eyes widened. “Liam, you can’t do that! That was against protocol!” She hissed urgently.

“But protocol also states that if a killing shot is the only way to save yourself or another person, then take it,” I replied a little smugly. She’s always nagging about protocols and rules and I couldn’t help but take pride in the fact that I remembered some of it.

She sighed. “I wish you didn’t take a life to save mine.”

My eyes widened at her words. “Tanya, your life is above everyone else’s on my priority list here. It’s you first then everyone else. And that’s how it will stay.”

She went silent for a bit as her eyes fell to her lap. I half regretted telling her that she was pretty much my priority because I knew that that was all she was going to be thinking about. She’ll think about how many lives I’ll be willing to take just to save hers and she’s not happy about it.

I don’t want to kill lots of people but if it meant saving her, I would. I promised to protect her. I promised her, myself and her family. I will never break that promise.

“Your love for me has turned irrational,” she finally said and I almost rejoiced in relief to know that she didn’t say something about her being my priority.

“I have to get the doctor. He said that on the sixth day he can take it out. So you have two more days with those horrid stitches,” I half smirked and half grinned.

“How many did I get?” She asked as she cupped her injured collarbone.

“Twelve, i think,” I replied and walked out of the infirmary.

The doctor ordered bed rest for another week and that the dressing must be changed every four hours excluding overnights. He also ordered her to slowly start moving her arm so she can get some feeling into it again. The whole time, Tanya complained about the fact that she wasn’t allowed to do anything but lie on the bed for a whole week.

“I’ll stay with you,” I offered.

“Don’t be ridiculous. You have work to do,” she replied with a wave of her hand.

“Not really, Greg put me off so that I can take care of you,” I replied.

“Did he now?” She looked slightly bemused. “Well then, you’re gonna have to wait on my hand and foot.” She was grinning mischievously.

I knew in that moment I was going to regret taking care of her.

In that whole week of ordered bed rest, Tanya never let me sit for longer than five minutes. She kept telling me what to do, like grab her food, her bag, her clothes. She even made me fix her sitting positions and the lighting. The moving around was worse than any training I’ve ever been in.

On the day she got her stitches taken out, she made me get her water then she ordered me back out to get ice. Then she told me to get her an apple and then she changed her mind to a banana and I was running around like an idiot trying to appease her commands.

Finally, it was her last day of bed rest and I can finally get rid of the spoilt princess alter-ego that possessed Tanya. I was ready to dance in happiness.

“How was taking care of me, Mr Payne?” She grinned.

“Excruciating,” I replied.

“Now, now, Mr Payne, you still have a full twenty four hours left under my command,” she grinned excitedly.

“Oh, no,” i mumbled under my breath.

“I want some entertainment, please,” she demanded despite the please.

“Like what?” I asked since we couldn’t bring the tv in here, everyone else was watching.

“Improvise, Mr Payne. Be creative,” she leaned back on the cot and waited for me to do something for her.

I smirked. “So you finally want to hear some One Direction songs.”

Her face scrunched up in slight disgust. “I was thinking more the 1975 or the Arctic Monkeys.”

“How about Mumford & Sons? That’s your favourite band, isn’t it?” I asked. She nodded excitedly.

I burst into I Will Wait with added effects of an air banjo. It was actually a little difficult to sing I Will Wait without the music and it was even harder trying to remember the lyrics. But it made Tanya grin like an idiot so I continued without stopping.

When I finished my horrible rendition of the song, Tanya broke into an applause and i bowed. “Another song, please.”

I groaned. “I’m gonna sing you one of our songs. So you know how miserable this is for me.”

“It better be upbeat,” she demanded.

I grinned. “And just because you said that, it won’t be upbeat.”

She groaned but settled herself anyway. I pretended to play an acoustic guitar that I’m pretty sure looked ridiculous to any onlookers since it was a slow start. But I kept going and I sang You & I. It was such a slow song and it made miss home like crazy. I felt so home sick singing it and it made mis the tours and the fans.

When I finished singing the song, Tanya was quiet. Her eyes studied every inch of me and I felt slightly self conscious under her gaze. She has no idea how intense her stares could be. “Well?” I asked.

“It was beautiful,” she whispered.

I happily smiled. “Thank you. I loved performing that song. Everyone would take out their concert lights or use the flashlights on their phones and they’d just wave it in the air and it looked so amazing on stage.”

“Do you like it on stage?” She asked. I sat down on the foot of her bed.

“I love it on stage,” I replied.

“What’s it like?” She whispered.

“It’s thrilling and adrenaline pumping and so exciting. I always feel like I’m on top of the world,” i answered.

“I remember seeing you at your last concert. You looked a little sad but I’m guessing that was because it was your last for three more years. But other than that, you looked like you love it. All of you,” she said.

I nodded. “We don’t like the fame as much the but the feeling on stage it absolutely amazing.”

We stayed quiet for a while then Tanya place her hand on my leg and smiled at me.

“Thanks for nursing me back to health,” she grinned.

I pulled her in for a hug. “Anytime, Tan. Just don’t scare me or worry me like you did.”

We pulled away. “No promises.”
