15. A Helpful Hand

I took a glance at my appearance in the mirror and flinched away. I looked terrible. I slid on a pair of dark blue denim shorts and a gray shirt, stuffing my feet into my nikes before grabbing a small workout bag out of the closet. Shoving a pair of cotton short, a sports bra and a tank top into the bag, i zipped it up and through my hair into a ponytail before sliding my arms through my gray jacket. Yanking my bag up i walked out of the house and called for a cab, asking to go to the nearest gym.
The car came to a stop in front of an old building, its white paint peeling off the sides. I sighed and got out, quickly paying the driver and walking through the double doors. The immediate smell of sweat and feet filled my senses, making me crinkle my nose. I looked around, spotting an open punching bag. After finding the ladies locker room i quickly changed into my clothes, sliding my feet back into my shoes before stuffing my clothes in my bag and my bag into an empty locker.
I stood in front of the punching bag, looking at it. I didn’t even know why i came here. I just felt the need to go somewhere that i could feel tougher in. Some place where i felt like i could stand up for myself in. What has my life come to. Getting drunk, giving my innocence up to an ass and nearly getting raped every other day. Yay.
I angrily lashed out, hitting the bag in front of me. It felt good. So i repeated the action again and again, taking all my anger and stress out as my lifeless opponent until my knuckles started to hurt and burn from the contact. I felt tears well up in my eyes and i plopped down on the floor, my head between my knees as i tried to control my sudden emotion.
“Are you okay?” a female voice asked, making me look up. A girl stood beside me, looking a little awkward as she tried to check on me. I nodded, standing up to find her taller than me.
She stood about five foot six inches, taller than my five foot two. Her long hair was up in a high ponytail, hanging in thick red curls. She was average weight, looking not to much bigger than me. Her upper half was covered in a black sports bra, exposing her belly before you came to her matching black spandex shorts, showing her rather round bum. Her eyes were the lightest of blue’s, contrasting in a pretty way with the dull yellow ring around the pupil of her eyes. They glittered down at me as she gave me a friendly smile, putting me at ease. I nodded at her again, relieved.
“Yeah, i guess so.” I said, examining my knuckles to avoid eye contact. i winced as i brushed my fingertips across the cuts like a retard.
“Here, come with me and i’ll clean and wrap those.” she said, motioning towards the locker room, i nodded and followed after the red head.
She led me through open door and all the way to the back of the locker room, grabbing a first aid kit from a shelf. She motioned to the sink and i stood by it, watching her as she grabbed the peroxide, two cotton pads, a tube of gel and a roll of wraps. She instructed me out hold my hands over the sink, popping the bottle open before pouring the liquid out onto my knuckles. They fizzed a dull white, getting all the germs and nastiness out. She then ran cold water over them, letting me dry them before putting the foreign gel over my knuckles, gently rubbing it in before placing the cotton pads over them before wrapping my hands.
“Thanks.” I said, running my fingertips across the rough wraps.
“No problem. My name is Ariel by the way.” She said, giving me a friendly smile.
“I’m Nichole. It’s nice to meet you.” I said smiling back at her. She started towards the door, waiting on me to catch up.
“So why did you decide to kill the bag?” She asked, making my face turn red. I didn’t realize she was watching me.
“I’ve been through a lot here in the past week or so. It helped me get all my stress and anger out.” I said, watching my feet as we walked.
“That would explain why you look like crap. Are you being bullied or abused t home?” She asked bluntly. My eye brows shot up and my wide eyes met her questioning ones.
“It’ okay. I can teach you how to defend yourself form these kind of things.” she said, gently grabbing my elbow to stop me.
“I know how it feels to be pushed around and taken advantage of. I can help you if you’re willing to put forth the effort and time.” She said, studying my face.
“So you can teach me how to defend myself?” I asked, watching her nod her head. I nodded.
“Okay. How though?” I asked, slightly worried. She shrugged, smiling kindly down at me.
“Meet me int he middle of the ring. I’ll be right back.” She said, pointing towards the empty ring in the middle of the gym. I nodded, making my way up the stairs and ducked into the ring. I stood in the middle of the ring, picking at the red nail polish that was starting to chip, avoiding the curious eyes that was trained on me.
“Here you go.” Ariel appeared beside me, handing me a small pair of boxing gloves. I frowned. I’m not much of a fighter. As if she read my mind she placed a soothing hand on my shoulder.
“It will make a big difference. I promise.” She said, slipping my hands through the gloves and tightening them before shoving hers into two pads, one on each hand. She held them up, spreading her feet wide apart.
“I want you to hit the pads.” She said, bumping her pad against my glove. I nodded, copying her pose. I reared back, putting all my strength into the punch. It smacked into the pad loudly, making me feel a little proud of my hit.
“Good, that’s a good start. Now i know where we can work from. But instead of raising your arms so high, lower them a little, kinda duck over your fists to protect not only your abdominal part but your face as well. Keep your face close to your hands so you can block quicker.” She instructed, yanking the pads off as she instructed me, adjusting my arms.
Hours later i plopped down on a mat, propping my elbows on my knees as i tried to catch my breath. I was pouring sweat and the cool mat felt good agains the burning heat that seemed to radiate from my body as i laid back. Ariel sat beside me, sipping cold water as she handed me a separate bottle. I sat up and took it eagerly, unscrewing the lid and downing half the bottle.
“Easy. That’s the best way to get a stomach cramp while working out or training. Sip on it. You’ll cool down faster.” She said, watching me. I nodded, still gasping for air. I’m gonna be so sore in the morning. I’ve never worked that hard for anything and now i know why.
“Come back tomorrow around seven. The gym will be closed to the others and we can train in private. Instead of wearing a tank top, just bring a sports bra. It will keep you cooler and give you a little more freedom.” She said, standing up, lending me a hand to help me up. I took it, grunting as my tired muscles objected to the movement.
“Okay. Thank you for helping me.” I said, smiling tiredly at her. She smiled back, walking with me to the locker room. I quickly parted from her, grabbing my bag and walked out of the gym a few short moments later, not bothering to call a cab. The wind outside felt good against my clammy skin, making my sweaty hair unstick from my face as i walked back to hell.
