53. Act 52

I shot up in my bed, my chest heaving with each heavy breath I took. My mind spun in circles so fast that everything was a blur. Nothing stopped its dizzying turns until I recognized the feel of a hard object in my mouth. Slowly, I opened up as my heart leapt into my throat. The small thing fell into my palm. I gazed upon the gold ring. In the center was the royal crest of Onsia. The crest changes every time there is a change of ruler. The crest on this ring depicted a rearing lion surrounded by an eight pointed star. My mind was overwhelmed by shock as my father’s crest rested in my hand.

How could a dream do that? It was utterly impossible. The only way I could have my father’s crest is if it wasn’t a dream. I felt my bed, it didn’t feel wet. So then it must have been in my head, but the ring was proof that it wasn’t.

The door to the room opened and Caiden appeared in the doorway. Quickly, my hand closed around the ring and dived under the covers.

“What’s wrong?” he asked, seeing the wild expression on my face. I shook my head vehemently and let out a huge breath.

“Just had a weird dream is all,” I said then added, before he could say anything, “what is going on out there?”

He finally stepped into the room entirely and shut the door. Walking over, he sat on my bed beside me.

“Onsian troops are advancing, they have begun fighting the platoon of wizards in the mountains.” He glanced at me, “apparently there’s a difference between wizards and magicians. They seem to use it like a job status here.”

I thought about that for a moment, allowing that tidbit of information to distract my mind from the object in my hand.

“Anyways, I’m supposed to tell you that they are ready to begin the preparations for our trip back to Irian. They have packs already stocked for us, we just need to bathe and change, then we can be on our way.”

I nodded, “alright, I’ll be out in a minute.” He looked at me for a moment more before getting up and leaving. I sighed once he left and brought my hand out again. I studied the crest, it was genuine. I wasn’t sure exactly what to do with it, I knew that I had to hide it. If anyone else knew about my dream and the ring, they wouldn’t allow me to go on the trip.

After thinking for a moment I decided to hide the ring in the bottom of my pocket-knife holster. With some master maneuvering I was able to fit the pocket knife into the holster without it falling out when I walked. Then I left the room, in search of a bathroom in which I could wash up.

I spotted a servant in the hall and she showed me to where the baths were. They were down a couple floors. Once I stepped into the room I was instantly enveloped in heat. Steam drifted throughout the room and there were several women soaking in the soothing water. I took a clean towel from one of the shelves on the wall and quickly stripped. The room was split into two areas. One part was the huge pool of hot water, but lining the back wall were devices that looked like huge metal pipes, they seemed like shoots, that opened up out of the ceiling. A cord dangled from each one of them. I stood under one of the shoots and pulled the cord. Somewhere within the piping a metal slab slid back, allowing the water to flow down over my body. I took my time and rinsed the dirt off my skin. After washing the dirt smudges off I walked over to the giant bath and slid into hot water. Despite my dream from last night, the water soothed my aching bones. I leaned my head back on the stone wall and shut my eyes, allowing my body to be healed by the rejuvenating waters.

After I a while I glanced at my fingers. They had begun to prune and I took that as a sign to get out. I climbed out of the water and used my towel to begin drying off. I dressed quickly in my wrinkled clothes, and then decided to head back to my room, hoping to find Caiden there.

Although I did not find him when I reached the room, my efforts were not in vain. He had been there, and left a new pair of clothes on my bed. I had been given a green and brown robe. The pattern looked like the forest, perfect for blending in. Beneath the robe they had given me a skin tight black body suit. I smiled, looking forward to the journey ahead. I had never before realized how much I truly loved traveling, but after hiking across countries it really began to grow on me.

My legs ached for a long excursion again, and I found myself eager to get back on the road. After changing into my new clothes I traveled down through the Citadel looking for anyone that I recognized to figure out what to do next. Eventually I found one of the officials and he directed me to where they had my supplies ready for me.

That’s where I finally found Caiden. He had been given the same outfit as me. He nodded to me once I entered the room and picked up his pack. After slinging it over his shoulder he picked up mine and handed it to me.

“After we eat breakfast we are going to leave,” he told me. We walked over to the table of food that was awaiting us and ate as much as we could. Finally, once we had eaten our weight, we stood, knowing that we wouldn’t get a meal like that again for a while.

“Ready?” He asked me, and I nodded in response. “Ok, let’s get going.”
