6. Act 5

The next few days passed like a blur. I took my father’s place and completed his royal duties. All of my spare moments were spent between receiving Ida’s reports and sitting in my father’s chambers. Neither of them had made any progress so far. My nights were sleepless as I worried about my father and hoped that soon Ida would come with some useful information. Finally, she did. After four sleepless nights, Ida crept into my room. She stopped me from lighting my candle as she knelt by my bedside.

“I have found something you need to see,” she whispered to me. “I do not know exactly what it is, but I have a feeling this is what you have wanted me to find.” Her gaze locks with mine, informing me of the importance of her words. I waste no time getting out of bed and following her out of my room. She leads me down the dark halls and through servant passages where I have never been. More than once I almost panicked after losing sight of her, but she always came back once she realized she had gone too fast. It took all my strength to keep my emotions locked down.

Finally after what felt like hours we stopped at the end of a hall. There was light around the corner, and a dank scent had permeated the air a while back. Ida peeked her head around the corner, and motioned me to follow her as she stepped into the light. A few yards away was a black door, flanked by two torches on either side of it. The metal was rusted but strong, and the strange lock in the center made it look impenetrable.

“This is the dungeon,” I stated quietly. Ida looked back at me and shook her head.

“No, the main dungeons are on the other side of the castle. This one is special. Straiyer came down here alone, but he didn’t use a key to get in. He spoke to the door, and it opened.” Her last words were hushed, as if she did not believe them herself.  I certainly did not.

“That cannot be possible, only magic could do that,” I whispered to her. As soon as I mentioned the word, Ida curled her fingers into the symbol of protection.

“I do not know what it was, but I do know that whatever that door is guarding, it can only be evil,” she whispered. “Now, we have to go,”

I didn’t argue with her as she darted back into the shadows. My entire body was on edge. Magic was illegal in Onsia, and it was only rumored to exist in the outer corners of our world. There was no way it could be here. It would be impossible for someone with magic to survive so long without being discovered. Surely Straiyer had used a key of some sorts that Ida could not see. If not, I feared for the future.
