41. Act 40

Logan’s estimate was right. We entered the streets of the capital at around noon. The sun shined high in the sky as we made our way through the city. Everything seemed normal on a whole. They had stone roads, and many houses lining the streets. The scent of food wafted past my nose, making my stomach grumble. I blushed embarrassed and looked around to see if anyone had noticed. The people were dressed in bright outfits of blues, greens, reds, oranges and yellows. Music seemed to cover the entire city like a blanket, everywhere people were having fun and going about their day.

I felt a pang of nostalgia from the scene. The city reminded me so much of Irian. I wondered if perhaps some of them had visited Irian’s market, they would have blended right in. I was pulled out of my thoughts when both of my hands were clasped, one by Logan and the other by Caiden. The streets were crowded and I suddenly realized that if they hadn’t, I probably would have lost both of them. As we weaved our way through people I began to feel nervousness prick my skin. The government building was looming straight ahead. It was a tower structure, standing tall as it watched over the city. There was a wall around it made of white granite. The guards gave us a weird look as we passed through it, but nothing was said.

“Welcome to the Citadel,” Logan muttered to us. I glanced at him, his face had lost its carefree expression that he had worn earlier today and replaced it with something far more serious. He turned and looked at both of us, “I need you two to stay out here. I promise I will be back, I am going to go set up a meeting.” I nodded, glancing at Caiden. His face looked serious too, and he stood a bit taller. Logan studied us for a moment before he was satisfied. He turned and started to leave before he stopped. In three strides he had walked back and closed the distance between his lips and mine with a heart-stopping kiss. His arms pulled me close, tightly against him. Although I was taken aback at first, I quickly gave into the kiss. The fierceness of it almost made it feel desperate somehow. Finally we pulled away, and his arms reluctantly loosened around me. This time he looked at me, with a strange look that I had never seen before in his eyes. Before I could figure out what it was he turned and walked away into the Citadel.
