40. Act 39

“So where are we going?” I asked Logan. We had been walking for about an hour and he had not said anything.

“We are heading to the main city, Florien, to meet with the master magicians.” He said, but when he glanced at my face and saw my confusion he sighed and launched into an explanation. “What you call the Forbidden Zone is locally known as Terra Veneficus. Here we have a council that is in charge, made up of four elected officials, and three master magicians. Together they keep peace in our land. If you can convince them to join your cause you will have our army at your command.”

I nodded as I took in all of this information. How would I get them to side with me? After all, in their history my people committed mass genocide against them and then banished them here. I let out a deep breath. I couldn’t be discouraged by that right now, I had to keep moving on and take my chances.

“Why are there more officials than magicians on the council?” I asked, finding that odd. I figured that they would rule this land.

“There are only four master magicians in existence. At one point, there had been more magic in the world, it is even rumored that the level of mastery now used to be the average level for every magician back in ancient times. For some reason, magicians have been growing weaker over the generations, now it is rare to reach a mastery level. Those who can are put on the council to help protect our land.”

Thoughts began to swirl in my mind, wondering about what could cause that decline. It couldn’t have been from the actions of my people, or could it?

“When will we reach the capital?” Caiden asked. I glanced over at him; he had been so quiet I almost forgot he was here.

“ Midday,” Logan said looking up at the sky, estimating. “They wont like our sudden arrival, but I have no doubt they will want to see us everyday. After all, it’s not everyday that foreigners dare to enter our land. “ The corners of his mouth curled up in a small smirk so quickly that if I hadn’t been looking I might have missed it. I wondered what would happen to Logan if he would get punished or something for being with us. When I asked, he simply laughed and said no before switching the subject. I decided to let it go. We fell into a silence; all of us were focusing on putting one foot in front of the other. We needed to keep moving forward.
