37. Act 36

I blushed, utterly embarrassed that I forgot and nodded. I muttered a thank you for his offer and we began prepping the soup. We began working and chatting quietly about the ingredients as the meal slowly came together. Vaguely, I was aware of Logan as he came and sat down beside me. Caiden slipped in one last spice and I began stirring the pot.

“Smells good,” Logan commented. I smiled at him and nodded.

“I hope so,” I told him, and I truly meant it. This was my first time actually cooking a meal, a part of me as really wishing that Logan would like it. Soon, it was done and I served everyone up. I glanced down at my bowl. I knew that I should wait for it to cool down, but the creamy broth looked too delicious to wait for. Slowly I sipped it. I was right; I should have waited for it to cool down. Although it was good, my mouth was burned right away and I had to put it down. I shot Logan a glare as he laughed at my spectacle.

“Was it good?” Caiden asked curiously. I nodded as I turned towards him, ignoring Logan.

“Yeah, the bit I could taste of it anyway.” I joked. He smiled and looked down at his own bowl. He blew on the soup before taking a sip of it. I watched, hoping that he would approve. The smile on his lips answered my thoughts and I grinned in return.

“It’s delicious.” He said satisfied. I nodded happily and picked up my soup again. My eyes glanced over at Logan. His face had turned sour and he just looked into his bowl and ate silently. I wondered what had gotten into him, but was distracted from that thought by the rumble of my stomach. Without hesitation I resumed eating, now that it was cooler. The taste coated my mouth with creamy goodness. Although it could use a little more salt, overall it was pretty good. I ate the whole thing, satisfied with every mouthful. While I reached for seconds, starving after our long journey, Logan left and went to his tent, muttering something about going to sleep.

I deftly finished my dinner as my thoughts circulated around Logan. He was fine less than an hour ago. I couldn’t figure out what had happened to affect his mood. Even while Caiden and I were cleaning up together I couldn’t get my mind off it. When we had finished I excused myself and went over to Logan’s tent. I crawled inside beside him. His eyes watched me and I laid down, squished against him. These tiny tents were only made to accommodate one person.

“What up?” He asked me quietly as we laid face to face. My hand grasped his lightly and laced our fingers together.

“I want to know what’s wrong. You just sort of left dinner all of a sudden, but I thought you were happy.”

His eyes studied the concern on my face. He raised his free hand and lightly brushed away some hair from my face.

“You truly are beautiful,” he whispered to me. I felt my heart leap into my throat, and for a moment I was speechless. Of course, I knew this was just a way for him to deflect my concern, but he had never complimented me before. Although I had been told that many times by others, this seemed to be the only time where it actually meant something to me. His hand squeezed mine, bringing my mind back to the moment while I laid, transfixed in his silver gaze. “I don’t know how or why, but you mean very much to me. I want you to always be with me.”
