36. Act 35

We stood at the base of the mountain, saying our farewells. It was time for Captain Tregor and Natalie to head back to the caverns to rejoin their forces. Before departing, the captain came up to me and handed me a small dagger with a strap. He informed me that I could cut a hole in the pocket of my trousers and strap the blade around my thigh. In case I was in a situation, I could just stick my hand in my pocket and extract the blade. Due to the size, it would be undetectable unless I had to undergo a thorough search. I hoped I would it would not come to that. I felt safer with the blade secured against my skin; it served as a comforting reminder that I was not defenseless.

All of us looked forward and started up the mountain pass. Trees surrounded us as we began hiking up the steep terrain. Logan took the lead since only he knew where we were heading. Somehow I felt a slight bit of disappointment. I don’t know exactly what I was expecting once we entered the zone, but definitely not this. Everything was so normal; the trees resembled the ones in Ryler Forest, and the woodland animals were all normal creatures. Where was the magic? My thoughts must have been easy to read off my face because Logan chuckled as he studied me.

“What?” I asked indignantly. The familiar smirk was painted across his lips as he answered me.

“You aren’t going to see any monsters or fairies just casually walking around,” he said amusedly. “This is not a fantasy story realm,”

I scoffed at him, trying to save face, but I knew embarrassment was written all over me. We continued to walk at a brisk pace for most of the day. We had made it just over the mountain when we made camp. From our high perch, the land was spread out below us. The Junip Mountains curved around the zone serving as a barrier between the Forbidden Zone and Onsia. On this side of the range, the land opened up into a vast valley. I could see two lakes off in the distance, separated by many miles, but were connected by a river that ran down from the mountains. Small towns could also be seen from our perch. They looked to only be a few hours away; I had hoped we intended to reach them in the morning. Other than the towns and the lakes, the valley was covered in the forest that also dominated the mountain range.

After taking in the view I turned back to camp. Logan had begun setting up tents and Caiden was tending to the fire. He looked at me very seriously and asked,

“Are you ready?” I looked back at him questioningly, not remembering what he meant. He let out a small sigh that turned into a laugh at the end. “You’re cooking dinner tonight. Come, I’ll help get you started.”
