30. Act 29

His lips felt like a feather brushing against mine, unexpectedly gentle. My eyes shut as my mouth quickly surrendered to his. I felt his arms slipping around my waist, pulling my body to his as his teeth tugged playfully at my lip. My hands slipped over his neck into his soft hair. I opened my eyes slowly and gazed up at him. A small smile spread across my face, resulting in one on his.

His head lowered down beside my ear as he held me close. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen you smile before.”  He whispered to me. His hot breath heated my ear, which quickly ignited my whole body. “I like it,” his lips lightly brushed against my ear.

My eyes glance at the walls of our tent, unsure where to look during a moment like this. They catch on the form of a figure just outside of our tent, and then it dawned on me; someone could walk in at any time. How long had Caiden been gone? Suddenly it felt like our moment had stretched for hours and that Caiden would enter at any moment. I slipped my hands between my chest and his and pushed him off. He rolled off me, reluctant, but without resistance.

“I need to go to sleep,” I told him. A lewd smirk crossed his face.

“I didn’t need to get off for that.” His smooth tone warmed me deep inside. Still, I rolled my eyes playfully and relaxed on the mat. He got up and grabbed his mat and unrolled it next to mine. He then snatched a blanket and draped it over the both of us while his arm snaked around my waist, pulling me close. “I can’t wait to show you my homeland.” His breath tickled my ear as he whispered to me. “I want you to see everything: how the sun shines off the mountains during dawn, the lakes that glow at night, and the festivals held by my people. Their magic will dazzle you.”

I had shut my eyes, imagining those sights, but they opened upon the word: magic. I wiggled around in his arms until I was facing him.

“Logan, I cannot align with magicians.” My words were barely audible, but I could tell by the darkening expression in his eyes that he heard everything clearly. “ They are perceived as evil, especially now that one has taken over the throne. I will not win the trust of my people if I use magic to reclaim the throne.” My eyes left the spot on his shoulder they had been staring at and traveled up to his face. For a long time he was silent, and the look in his eyes was unreadable. I couldn’t determine if it was disappointment, or perhaps pity. Whatever it was I wished that I could have erased it from his face.

“This is not a choice you can refuse.” He said in a hard tone. “Many of them will not want to join your plight, princess. After all, it was your race that massacred most of us generations ago. It was also your people that stole our ancestors’ land and banished them to the outer provinces. You need to go to the Forbidden Zone just to secure your own safety from Straiyer, but do not forget the history that goes back between our races. What Straiyer did to the city was simply a taste of what we had to bear back when humans were slaughtering our people. “ I knew that he saw the increasing look of rage on my face, but he combated it with his sharp tone. “In our perception, it is humans that are evil.”

My raged boiled within me, starting at my guy and blossoming throughout my entire being. I gritted my teeth, knowing that at the slightest opening it would explode out of me uncontrollably.

“Get. Out.” I growled. With a simple sigh Logan got up and left the tent without another word. My blood screamed in my veins and I had to shut my eyes tight to bury it within me. I had no time to beat him like I imagined, or shout as his cocky, haughty face until his ears bled. No, right now I had to sleep. The rest could wait until tomorrow.
