29. Act 28

After the meeting with the councilmen, Captain Tregor led us to where we would be staying for the time being. It was a big tent, done up in fine red cloth. The cold cave floor was covered in a plush carpet. There were three mats rolled up in the corner, and a stove along the left side, and a desk across on the right side. I looked around, feeling guilty at being given luxuries at a time like this, but I smiled politely and thanked the captain. Turning down this tent would be an insult to the people, so I kept a pleased expression on until the captain had left, leaving us alone.

Caiden mumbled something about going to find some food before he left as well. Logan and I stood in the tent; an awkward silence quickly filled the space. I had been meaning to ask him why he had been so close to me on our journey here, but for some reason speaking at all just didn’t seem appealing. I walked over and grabbed one of the mats, feeling exhaustion tug at my bones. Just as I unrolled it though, Logan broke the silence.

“We cannot stay here,” he said, stating the obvious. Sitting down on my mat, annoyed that he was depriving me of sleep, I decided to play dumb.

“What do you mean?” I asked in a clueless tone. Now the annoyance had transferred to his face.

“Having a handful of broken troops will not be enough to go against Straiyer,” he quipped. “We have to leave.” His know-it-all tone irked me into a response.

“I know that!” I snapped, feeling my weariness cloud my judgment. “But where do you suppose we go, all wise and powerful sorcerer? No other country will side with a rogue princess and a wicked wizard.”

His eyes bored into me, making me regret my harsh tone immediately. “We must journey to the Forbidden Zone.” His eyes held no sign that he was toying with me; the gravity of his voice convinced me of his seriousness. “Only there will you be able to find what you need to defeat him.”

“It’s impossible, we cannot go to the Forbidden Zone,” I protested as he began to walk towards me. With every approaching footstep my mind seemed to go increasingly blank. “It’s forbidden.”

A devious smirk crossed his face as he leaned down over me. “I am not teaching you anymore tonight, princess. I have already told you far too much, the rest you will have to figure out.” His lilting voice matched the amusement in his eyes as he leaned in closer to me. The closer he got, the farther I leaned back, trying to keep distance between us. I lost my balance in the process and fell back against the mat. He grinned and moved over me, his body hovering only inches above mine. I gulped, as my field of vision was limited to only his face. His silver eyes glistened with a deep desire as he stared back at me. My eyes flicked down to his lips then back to his eyes. Father had not told me any stories about how to deal with this.
