23. Act 22

Five councilmen sat in front of me at a table, listening to my account of the past events. I told them everything, from the truth about Straiyer, to my father’s possession and eventual death, and about Logan. They seemed deeply disturbed finding out that the castle had been harboring not one, but two magicians, and that now one of them was in control of the country.

“How could you allow this to happen?” One of them asked me, accusation plain in his voice. “As heir to the throne it is your duty to be on watch for all potential threats surrounding his Majesty.”

“I apologize for not being diligent enough,” I said quietly, bowing my head to the councilman. He huffed and sat back in his seat.

“That is enough,” ordered the elder who sat in the middle of the table. “There is much blame to be had, and not all of it rests on you Princess. But now is not the time to be assigning it. What is the reason you have sought us out, Your Majesty?”

I nodded, in slight thanks for ending the line of accusations and cleared my throat.

“I have come here to request your assistance in helping me reclaim the throne. It is widely known that Irian has always sided with the royal bloodline. I am calling upon that bond in this dire hour as a plea for help. Straiyer cannot be allowed to rule this country; in his hands he will ravage our lands and disregard the needs of the people entirely. As the rightful heir to the throne, it is my duty to combat this evil, and I am asking for you to help me in this battle.”

Silently, each one of the councilmen considered my words. The silence seemed to stretch on for ages. Vaguely, in the background I could still hear the noises of the market place. But then, the sound of screams tainted the night.
