Daughter of evil

Vanessa Riddles's home is an orphanage. Her mother is dead and her father is unknown. Since she was four she has known she is a witch and when she receives a letter from Hogwarts she goes there in the hope that her life will turn better. But when she finds out the horrible truth about her father everything changes.

A new opportunity

Vanessa stared at Matt. "But owls don't leave letters. It is homing pigeons who do that, right...?"

"If it had been a normal letter, yes. But I don't think it is", said Matt. "I think it is from Hogwarts." Vanessa looked curiously at him.

"What is Hogwarts?" she asked.

"A school for witches and wizards. You get to learn how to control your magical powers there." Vanessa took the envelope and examined it. On the back there was a red seal. It showed a badger, a snake, a lion and an eagle. In the middle of them was a H. Vanessa opened the envelope and read the letter.

Dear Ms Riddle,

We are pleased to inform you that you have a place at Hogwarts school of witchcraft and wizardry. Please find enclosed a list of all necessary books and equipment.

Term begins on 1 September. We await your owl by no later than 31 August.

Yours sincerely,

Mirabella Delaney, Deputy Headmistress

Vanessa stared at the letter. Lots of questions started to form in her head but they never reached her lips, for she was too chocked to say a word.

"You are extremely fortunate, you know", said Matt, who had been reading over her shoulder. "I'd give anything for that chance." He smiled at her.

"But how am I supposed to buy all those things?" she asked. "I haven't got any money."

We'll see about that later", said Matt. "But to find them I think we might have to go into town first."

So Vanessa had to go to her room and pack. She didn't have many personal belongings, compared to others, but she did have an enormous shelf filled with books about different , like fairies and trolls. She was about to pack them too, but Matt stopped her ("Only pack the most important").

Finally, she finished. She had packed a map over London, a water bottle and some books about giants (which she pressed into the bag while Matt wasn't looking). Everything was in a small, light blue backpack which she had been given by Mary. But when she thought of Mary, it hurt. It would be very exciting to go to Hogwarts, but at the same time she felt stupid going away and letting Mary return to the orphanage and discover she wasn't there anymore. She quickly pushed aside that thought and then went out through the front door together with Matt.
