Blue Box

Ember Winters has had the same dream as long as she could remember. Monsters and chocolate. Doctors and boxes. But they are only dreams, right?
Oh, they're real. And Ember is soon going to get the surprise of a life time. Everything she has ever thought was real is an illusion. All the things she claimed didn't exist. Well, they do. And the man she has known all her life from a dream, he will save her life.

15. Broken Hearts

I felt a hand rest on my shoulder. I turned around, expecting Mom or Dad, but I was not surprised to see the Doctor.

     "Are you okay?"

     "I don't know."

A moment of silence passed before the Doctor spoke again.

"Do you want to travel with me?"

     "As a companion?"

"No," he answered mockingly. "As a Dalek! Of course, as a companion! My companion."

     "I - I would love to!"

He placed a key (connected to a chain) around my neck. "Key to the TARDIS. In case you ever want to get in without snapping."

"Not likely." After proving my point with a snap, I took a few steps into the TARDIS, looking at it in a whole new way. Not as a visitor, but as a companion. "I'm probably the first American companion, huh? The youngest too, perhaps? What about school?"

"Like you said. 'Who needs school when you can save the world?' "

I smiled at the thought, but quickly it turned to a frown. "Doctor, what happened to the other companions? They couldn't have possibly wanted to turn away from this."

His face looked guilty as he replied, "Well, Rose was sucked into a parallel world. Martha just - just left. Donna - " He took a deep breath, like a man about to pour salt into a fresh wound. "She activated the Meta-Crisis. Became half human, half Time Lord. The DoctorDonna. But all the knowledge that went in her brain was killing her. A little knowledge of the universe is fine, but the whole universe all at once?"

"What did you do?" I silently prayed that he didn't allow her to die.

"I had to wipe her memory of me. I used the hand thing." He wiped a tear away, trying to act all casual. "I shouldn't have told you that. I'm sorry."

"You're always sorry. So sorry. So, so sorry. Terribly sorry."

"Okay, okay. I get it. I'm very apologetic. What were we talking about? I zoned out. Sorry."

Laughing, I said, "Your past companions."

"Oh, yes. You wanna know something? It's funny in a sad way. I know we could never be together forever, at least not my definition of forever. They could spend their whole life with me, and I could never do the same. I let them come along, although I know, in the end, they will break my heart. Well, hearts."

"Did it hurt when you took Donna's memory?"

"Not physically, no. She wasn't truly affected, as far as she knows. But me? Yeah. Why do you ask?"

"No reason," I lied. Then I kissed him... again. Unlike before, I was completely aware of every detail. His soft hair as I embraced him. The fact he wasn't a bad kisser. The way he refused to push away, no matter how pedophile-ish kissing a seventeen-year-old girl must have felt to a nine-hundred-three-year-old man. I stopped and looked at him, smiling.

"What did you do that for?"

"Because - because I love you. I love you, okay? And I would have regretted it everyday if I hadn't done that before doing this." I placed one hand on his head, moving my fingers to the positions. Two below the ear, two on the temple, and one beneath his eye. I did the same with my other hand.

Just like that, I was in his mind, which was very well organized for a brain. It look like a house. A very large house. There were a bunch of hallways, but trusting my gut, I followed the middle one. The corridor had doors with little plaques. Silver plaques read MICKEY SMITH, JACKIE TYLER,  and CAPTAIN JACK HARKNESS.  Gold plaques stated ROSE TYLER, MARTHA JONES, and  DONNA NOBLE... and EMBER WINTERS. I walked to my door and opened it to reveal, well, me. Me kissing the Doctor twice. Me defeating the Raguson. Me running in the dream. I quickly shut the door.

"I - I don't want to break your hearts. I would rather shatter my own than let that happen," I explained (although I wasn't sure the Doctor could hear me) as I grabbed the gold plaque bearing my name. I ripped it off.

After I removed my hands, the Doctor fell into my arms. I grabbed him from under the armpits and began to pull his unconscious body out the TARDIS. Tears streaked my face as I yelled, "Mom! Dad! I need some help!"
